crasharama -> SJ50 Questions (3/10/2006 10:42:25 PM)

Hi Bob,

I thought I would ask here so I dont clog up the workshop email. A couple of quick qusetions on my SJ50.

When I crashed my F20 the exhaust was dinged up pretty bad, are you guys able to repair the exhaust with new tubes, or is it throw away? If so I would like to send it back to get it repaired.

Second question, I was thinking of also getting an SS muffler for it. What prop sizes will keep it in the rev range with this muffler fitted, & are we talking carbon pylon props like Bolly's & Supercool props now?

Thanks again,
Tony.

Hi Tony,
Thanks for writing.

Yes, the mufflers can be repaired. A small dent in the outter tube will not affect its function. But if its something you wish repaired, sure... send it in.

The SS muffler tends to run best in the 17,500 rpm and higher range. Ground rpm at launch must be over 17K rpm. You usually do not need carbon - the APC props are ok. Usually a standard APC 9x7, 9x8 (sometimes a 9x9) will work well. The Q-500 props are ideal. 8.75x8W 8.8x8.5 8.8x8.75 8.75x9W - and if you are flying something small and quick (a Q-500, qm or something like that) try the APC 8.5x7.25 :) (yeah, it seems small... but trust me on this one...)

These props will tend to turn 18K rpm or better.

Im not sure if cool has props in this general size, but sure... if he has one that will turn-up in the application, give it a try.

Bob

Thanks Bob,
I probably should have put in what the engine is going into. It going back into another F20, but it is the Sportsman aviation machine this time. Seems a bit more thought out than the old 1.

This is the ding in the side of the exhaust, the nose leg pushed it in when it hit.

I will contact Dub through the next couple of weeks then & get organised with sending this 1 back & sending both the repaired 1 & an SS.

Thanks again,
Tony.

The SS muffler will work fine on the SA F-20. Use a 9x8

Yep, that muffler needs some fixin. :)

Bob
