Looks sweet so far. A blue tinted canopy should really set it off.
Can't wait to see it completed and ready to fly.

Dave,

Amen to the NO HOT WATER with the dye.. just let it cool and let the canopy soak ... for as dark a tint as you like... Then, You can bring the plane by the shop and I will make all sorts of offers to take it off your hands !!!!...LOL....

Great job...

Thanks, y'all for the dyeing info. I'm going to have to buy one of those disposable aluminum turkey roasting pans to have something big enough for the canopy. Mmm, blue turkey.

I added the black dope striping on the fuselage. I think it defines the color shapes a bit more against the white.

Looking super! What brand and type of tape are you using for masking? It looks like it is making nice sharp lines.

Thanks, 8178. I'm using 3M 471 plastic tape. I had to drive all the way over to the old, industrial district of town to find it. I finally found it at a Sherwin Williams auto paint distributor (they sell directly to a lot of the Nascar shops here in NC). At least where I live, it's not sold at typical retail chains like Autozone, Napa or Home Depot, etc.

It's about $8 a roll and comes in various widths. I'm using 1/4" tape. Let me tell you, this is amazing stuff! It makes very tight curves without bunching up on the inside radius. Because it's plastic it stretches as you bend it. (BTW, I picked up a Norvel .074 at a swap meet and that's a little 38" DB I'm making for it.)

I dyed the canopy using Rit dye. At first, I was aiming for a dark blue canopy. However, since blue contains a lot of red and since red is a more aggressive color, the canopy took on a purplish hue. This wouldn't work. So, I chose to pull the color back in the other direction (on the color wheel) by adding a packet of dark green dye. This gave me a dark amber, almost orange hue that I'm totally pleased with.

Most of the tinted canopies I see are blue, gray or black. I'm always happier with things that are a bit different than the typical. The dark amber ties in well with the orange dope and it just seems to come across a bit more vibrant than a dark blue canopy would. Dark blue isn't what you'd call an exciting color.

The next step is to get the thing securely attached to the fuse (it's just resting on top of it in the photo).

The amber looks nice with your orange and blue trim.

Something I use to play with for tinting canopies...... Testors transparent paints. Paint the inside. Tamia has some transparent and lexan color tint color for use on car bodies.... those work pretty well too

Excellent job on the bird !!

Thanks, guys. What a change in weather, Dan! This time yesterday I was at the Copperhead field flying my Sun Fli IV (flew great on it's maiden; hands-off straight and level across the field).

Thanks, Bob. Yep, I was talking to a friend at the field yesterday about that lexan car body paint. He had a canopy done that way and it looked great.

Lookin' great Dave! I saw the pic of your SF IV on another post - very sweet as well. I may have to bump up my mini SunFli project after seeing that. And on the subject of canopies, why no canopy on the SunFli? Did BSARGE fly it too fast causing in flight canopy separation? EJECT, EJECT, EJECT....

I have a small Sig canopy sitting around that might get added to the SF. It probably would look better. BTW, it flies rock solid for a plane that size. I added more aileron throw last night; when I was rolling it yesterday it was more like big, slow barrel rolls. And when I came out of an Immelman it was clear there wasn't anywhere near enough throw. I'm glad Bill was there to do the maiden for me. The only real issue was that the elevator was out of trim.

Neither of us tried anything radical with it. I just did a loop, the rolls, an Immelman and landed when I was on the sticks. It's amazing how straight it tracks, even in gusty wind. The engine isn't broken in yet, but when I get it leaned out a bit more the speed will obviously pick up. I'll have it out again next Wednesday and it should fly even better with the changes. Maybe I can get someone to shoot some video.

Hi Dave check out the planes at Lee Valley Wood Planes

By the way, like the paint scheme. Any further pics while we're waiting for 8178 watch his paint dry. Following both great threads.

8178, that's exactly what I do, so that the blade slices through the wood, same principle as a guillotine blade.

I called my X-acto plane a block plane, but it's really what they call a smoothing or finish plane with a blade, or iron, at 45°. The main problem with a block plane is that it's designed to cut end grain on butcher blocks, hence the name. The blade is at too shallow of an angle for shaping balsa, closer to 20° or even less.

This site sells what looks like a nice smoothing plane with a Japanese iron for a mere $265:
