Ok, I decided not to drag this project out too much longer, so I'm going with a basic blue fuselage. I just didn't feel like getting into hours and hours of masking (it takes a lot longer to mask than it does to paint). I still need to paint the canopy and I might add a little contrasting color to the top of the fuselage.
It came out much better than the first time I painted it mainly because I'm using my new HVLP gun. I love this gun and it literally sips paint, or at least it doesn't waste as much as my old touch-up gun did.
It feels great to finally be making some real progress with this project.

Your project is looking great. I really like th evintage paint scheme that you are doing. I know all about the time it takes to mask as compared to painting. Here is a couple pics for your enjoyment of my Utter Chaos that I glassed and painted. Keep up your good work and get that bird in the sky Keith

Keith, your plane looks great. I don't even want to think about how long it took to do the masking! Great job.
Thanks everyone. I think I'm done with the spraying. Finally! There are a few small places to touch up here and there. I'll let it cure for a few days and spray the clear coats.
I might get out the Paasche airbrush and hit the canopy with some highlights. Maybe, I don't know.

Looks great... a little mat to my taste but I think the clear coat will make huge difference. Keep up the great job.

Yes, it's very humid here in NC today and dope tends to blush and/or go flat in these conditions. The fix is simple. I add Retarder to the clear dope and it immediately goes glossy. The first time I saw it happen it scared me. Brodak suggests using Meguiar's Mirror Glaze Compound and Show Car Glaze to bring the clear coat to a true wet look.

Wow! that looks great. How are you going to finish it?
I had to make over a dozen phone calls and drive through three counties to get this stuff, but I finally found a supply. This is the high quality stuff that I should have been using all along. At $18 a gallon it's only a few bucks more than the cheap Home Depot stuff. The problem with the lacquer thinner Home Depot sells is that it's not hot enough to properly melt the underlying coats of dope when you spray on a new coat. With dope, you bond the coats by actually melting them together. Dupont makes an even hotter, slower drying product (3602), but since I'll be using Retarder the 3608 is the one to use. BTW, the Sherwin Williams equivalent to Dupont 3608 is $42 a gallon! I guess the NASCAR guys have a bigger budget than me.
