vasek, did Commander Cody ever make it up to Canada? He had a song about that.

Thanks, Todd! I've sprayed a bit more white and the wing is masked off and ready for the first color (orange). I hope to have most of the painting done by this weekend.

8178 -> RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood) (10/26/2006 10:32:33 PM)

Great color scheme!

Paternguy -> RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood) (10/26/2006 10:48:21 PM)

I might have to steal that one. LOL

Better hurry up and get it done before I can finish another airframe. LOL

Nightstalker -> RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood) (10/27/2006 12:17:54 AM)

Very nice scheme indeed. How will the blue match the anodized head on the Tower .61 your breaking in? I have never seen a Tower engine in person (or didn't look real close). Is the anodize purplish blue? Or more blue than purple? There's probably a proper name for said color, but just wondering. I know you'll post pics of the painting progress, so I won't even ask. Again, your build threads and threads/posts in general are awsome - I learn a lot of stuff from them - i.e. your approach to shaped wing tips. Mine always turn out so so at best... but now that I've read how a true master builder does it... Your last name isn't Bridi is it?

Thanks,
Todd

rainedave -> RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood) (10/27/2006 1:51:53 AM)

Thanks y'all. We're lucky here in the south east since we can get days in the 60s even in Nov and Dec. Still, I'd like to have this project done and ready to fly in a few more weeks. Todd, have you started the Sun Fli IV yet? I put an AP Wasp .061 R/C engine in mine so now it has throttle, and a bit more power. The next time I do wingtips I will sandwich a piece of 1/32" ply in the middle to give a clearer centerline and add protection against dings. That's one I picked up from Mr. Blue Angel, 8178.

As for Bridi, I got an email from Kingaltair a while back saying he took the leap and phoned Bridi (I had given him the contact info). Sadly, he stopped flying about five years ago due to failing vision, but seemed very interested in finding out about all the current classic pattern activity (I hope I got that right).

I also ordered some gloss black dope and I'm thinking about maybe painting a very thin pinstripe outline along the edges of the colors. It will give a crisper definition to the orange and blue shapes. I think I'll do one small area on the bottom first to see if it works visually.

BTW, the inspiration for the wing scheme came from one of Dean Pappas' Mayas. I think it's one of the most elegant ships I've ever seen. I need to bug him for a set of plans (he did about five marks, I think).

Dave,

Get on that, would you?[:D] I have been in contact with Mr. Pappas and he is working on getting a cost to sell copies of his Maya Mk.II plans. Maybe if more people bug him, he will get it done to get us off his back...[:D][:D]

very nice scheme [sm=thumbup.gif]

huh? Commander Cody? too cold up north for that guy > did I miss something? LOL

rainedave -> RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood) (11/1/2006 12:44:36 AM)

Finally! I finally started shooting color. I went ahead and added the black edging. I like it; sort of pulls out the orange a bit more. What do you think? The blue will be next. The entire bottom center section will get color, that's why I didn't waste white dope on that area.

8178 -> RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood) (11/1/2006 12:52:17 AM)

looks super nice!

nastybirdi -> RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood) (11/1/2006 12:53:09 AM)

Very nice Dave! love the color scheme.....patiently waiting for the blue. I'm building a Dirty Birdy 60 right now. I've choosen a purple, yellow and maroon. Might have to employ you for a design......

rainedave -> RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood) (11/1/2006 1:18:39 AM)

Thanks, y'all. I don't know how I got by without a compressor and gun all my life. Man, it makes applying dope a lot easier. I've been breaking in the Tower .61 I'll be using. 12,750 with an APC 11x8; not too shabby for a sixty. A ballpark thrust calculation shows that to be a 1:1 power to weight ratio. I'm getting impatient!

Jim_Purcha -> RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood) (11/1/2006 3:14:33 AM)

What compressor and gun are you using Dave? Vry nice paint scheme. Is the black pinstriping taped or painted on?

rainedave -> RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood) (11/1/2006 3:49:10 AM)

Thanks, Jim. It's a Sears compressor and a $10 Harbor Freight gun. Look at post #64 on pg. 3 of this thread for the model I bought and a pic of the gun. It is working best at about 20psi at the gun (about 30psi at the tank). At that setting the compressor can totally keep up with constant spraying.

The black is also Brodak dope. But, I simply masked it off and painted it with a brush. It takes forever to mask off the entire wing with tape and paper for spraying. I saved about two hours doing the black by hand. I'll have to mask everything again to spray the blue, though.

boomerik -> RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood) (11/1/2006 11:57:48 AM)

Looks really good Dave i like the black stripes gives it just something a bit extra.

Some more painting progress.

Jim_Purcha -> RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood) (11/2/2006 1:25:15 AM)

How much weight do you expect the plane to gain with the paint?

Digger44 -> RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood) (11/2/2006 1:36:10 AM)

Man, that is looking good!!![sm=thumbs_up.gif][sm=thumbs_up.gif][sm=thumbs_up.gif]

CedarYopantz -> RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood) (11/2/2006 1:54:07 AM)

Fantastic paint scheme Dave, it's got that classic look! And it's Dope to boot!!

Bill, flying by the Cedar Yopantz

rainedave -> RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood) (11/2/2006 2:30:12 AM)

Thank, Digger and Bill!

Jim, somewhere on a piece of paper I wrote down the weights of the wing and fuse (including tail) before I started painting. I'll try to find it, but the wing weighs about 28ozs now - with the two aileron servos installed, so, if I remember correctly it's gained about 1 1/2 ounces in dope. The fuse/tail with engine mount, pushrods and air tank/valve weighs 32ozs; engine is 24ozs, the rest of the radio gear is around 11ozs; retracts w/wheels are 13.5ozs; rudder, elevators and ailerons are around 4ozs.

That's 112.5 ozs, or, 7.03125lbs. My target limit is 120ozs, or, 7.5lbs. That leaves me 7.5ozs to play with. I figure I'll end up adding maybe 3 more ozs in dope. Even if I do break 7.5lbs it won't be a disaster. The RCM article stated 8.5lbs as the expected weight for the UFO.

Nightstalker -> RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood) (11/10/2006 2:56:49 PM)

Nothing like watching paint dry... How's it looking?

Todd

bob27s -> RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood) (11/10/2006 8:19:47 PM)

Looks like its coming in right on the numbers.....

How is the gloss-finish on the colors at this point ?

Bob

rainedave -> RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood) (11/20/2006 1:34:38 AM)

Thanks, everyone. I did some more painting today, but I'm leaving all the paper masking on for the next session, so no new pictures.

Bob, the dope colors are drying with a fairly nice gloss, but I'm not concerned about how they look. I will be using clear butyrate for the final coats. The last clear coat will have some retarder added and this will give the plane an almost wet look. I've used the Brodak clear with retarder on another project and it really turns out great.

rainedave -> RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood) (11/20/2006 9:54:28 PM)

Making progress. I still need to add the black striping on the fuselage and touch up a few little spots here and there. Also, I need to paint the control surfaces. But, the major part of the painting stage is done. I really enjoy spraying the dope, what can get tedious is masking off the areas to paint. The masking actually took much longer than the painting.

Once it's clear coated it will be time to assemble everything. Then I will take some more pictures outdoors with it resting on the gear.

One thing is for sure, the finished scheme always looks a bit different than what we imagine. It's going to stand out in the air![X(][:D]

BTW, I just hooked a digital fish scale through the nose ring: 3lb 14oz, so I can still get in under 7.5lb I hope.

rainedave -> RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood) (11/20/2006 10:22:44 PM)

Has anyone here ever tinted a canopy with Rit dye? I have some dark blue and I'm thinking the canopy needs tinting to stand out better.

Skylane -> RE: Bridi UFO Build (all wood) (11/20/2006 10:38:35 PM)

I have used Rit dye before. The first time I followed the directions and used hot water - you should have seen that Kaos canopy roll itself into a ball! So, after that I used luke warm (almost cool) water and let the canopy sit overnight. It took awhile, but eventually the black I used gave the canopy a smoky effect which was what I was after. So, yes it can work. Just don't use hot water and be patient.

Jeff
