I would like to buy CF not in the cloth form, but in a hardened form like in a 12"x12" sheet where I can cut holes in it and such.

Where may I purchase such a thing from?

Thanks

woodscra,

Seeing that you raise the subject (but this is a warning that manu others could heed)...

Before you embark upon this I urge you to think very seriously about some of the dangers of handling CF.

For a starter, I have posted before on what can happen if you get CF fibres under your skin. I have a growth on one of my fingers that the leeches are too scared to take off. It started with me getting careless while I was cutting a CF tube with my dremel.

Breathing dust (and microfibres) will be as dangerous if not more so than smoking. In fact, if you want to live long and prosper I would suggest that you take up the tobacco before you start cutting and sanding cf. That is one thing that I (fortunately as it happens) have never got careless with. There are techniques and practices that should be known and learned.

First...
Always use heavy plastic gloves when setting cf in resin, and when working with prepreg and pregged cf. I am not talking about these poncy latex things that the surgeons use. Far better to use the ones that go in the sink when mum washes the dishes. Barrier creams just stop the resin from making good adhesion, nothing else.

Second, when cutting or sanding cf (or anywhere near cf), always use a respirator or at least a 12 micron (Ithink) dust filter, or cut under milling oil or water. This latter choice makes it problematical - see below for a possible solution.

Third, cut cf with a "diamond thread" saw. This is like a wire with fine diamond (zirconia) powder on the surface. A dremel and cutting wheel can be used at a pinch for tube and rod.

Finally do not hold anything cf in your hand when your are cutting it (do you hear the voice of experience with this one?)

I would look long and hard at what you are trying to achieve with cf laminates. Sometimes it is far better to start with the raw core, cut to size and then lay the cf. Cutting the cf back to the core edge with a knife is simplicity itself while the resin is still green. Use glass plates and pressure or vacc-mould to get a good surface.

This is excellent safety information, I have heard that CF is not friendly, but I did not know the extent.

Is kevlar any safer? If so where can I get some of it?

Otherwise I will have to stick with wood.

We use and recommend anyone cutting cf plates wear a dust mask, gloves and a eye protection.

You can drill cf plate or cut it to shape with carbide or diamond rotary tools in a Dremel or Roto Zip style tool. Also, you can wet cut it with a tile cutter or shape it with an abrasive/grinding wheel.

You can also drill & tap cf plate for screws.

Check the Advertiser List here on RCU. Find it at the top of every page. It's a complete list of banner ads being posted on RCU. There is at least one company that has a banner ad for CF plates there.
