I was getting my planes ready for this season and I was adjusting the valves on my Saito 100 for the first time. The instruction book said to lubricate all moveable parts but it didn't say with what. Whats do you guys use to lube the rocker arm assembly?

I usually use some Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil -- after a year I've had zero problems with my Saitos and I regularly give the top-end an extra shot of oil, allowing plenty to run down the pushrod tubes into the camshaft area. I also use Mobil 1 as after-run oil.

I used 5w20 MOBIL 1 last year. Before that I used Marvels Mistery Oil or ATF Automatic transmission Oil.

I use straight castor, and I thin some slightly to run down the pushrod
tubes into the cam box. I don't use after run oil.

Marvel Air tool oil, mystery oil or automatic transmission fluid. I use them to lube the whole engine after running, as in after run oil.

Never heard of Moly grease, can you get it or something similar at the auto parts store?

Molybdenum Grease

It's the black chasis grease like you used to lube your car with.

It is sold in 1 lb and greater containers as Ford spec disc brake high temperature wheel bearing grease.

It's sold by Tower as well as the auto parts store.

Enjoy,

Jim

Of all oils, synthetics are least known for their corrosion protection ability, unless I am missing something here with a a mobil brand?

Zippi, set the valves tight on that baby like Bill Robinson recommends.... .0015". It works wonderfully. The clearance does not diminish as they get hot like gas engines. If you use the stock feeler guage, set the clearance so it pulls through with some drag. Then when you remove it, just make sure you can feel a hair of clearance in the rocker arm. The Saitos love it.

Mobil 1 synthetic is a whole different oil to the synthetics we use in our fuels.

It's a highly polar oil which means that it is *very* good at corrosion protection -- I actually use it on all my machinery (mill, lathe, etc) in the workshop to stop rust. Just a drop or two and a wipe with a rag leaves all those metal surfaces rust-free no matter what the weather/humidity.

I wouldn't use synthetic model-fuel oil (because it provides no corrosion protection and is decidedly non-polar so is almost repelled by metal surfaces). I wouldn't use castor either -- because it has the potential to dry out and become gummy if you don't use your engine for a longer period of time. I *do* use castor in my fuel however -- about 5%-7%.

I do think it really matters, as long as they are oiled with something.

All:

As stated, so long as the valve gear is oiled any good oil will do. Personally, it's ATF Dexron.

A note on "Moly" grease. The chassis lube has a very small amount, but if you want a grease with a high percentage of molybdenum disulfide get a can of "Nevr-Seez" and use that. MoS2 greases are commonly used as break-in lube for cam lobes and their matching lifters, but using them anywhere else in an engine is not encouraged. The two elements will separate under high heat and pressure, the remaining crystalline sulfur acts as a polishing agent. If used in excess more places will be polished than desired, and this is nothing but preliminary wear.

If you want to use a grease on the rocker gear it's better to use a white lithium grease such as "Lubri-Plate" in your engine.

Bill.

I fail to see how grease could be of any use unless it had a low melting point and would then flow between the parts needing lubrication.

Ever see folks smear chassis grease on auto door hinges? A complete waste of time, plus it gets on folks clothes. A master mechanic taught me to never use grease where there wasn't a grease fitting that let you put the grease where it was needed - between the parts with friction.
