Starting to build my 120 Corona in between my Lama 2 flying. Should I go with the Futaba GY240 Gyro 70HZ w/SMM Technology from Tower or go with the 401 series from Servo City. If the 401 is better....is it any harder to set up or will it make that much difference on the corona when actually flying?

On the main shaft is 7mm really needed or will 5mm survive most crashes? And if 7mm is it harder to work with?

The 401 is better and is easier to set up. At Tower, the 240 is $119.99 and the 401 is $139.99. Not much price difference for a much better gyro. The 401 will drive a digital servo, which controls tail pitch FAR better than an analogue servo. If there is one area to invest in, it's the gyro and tail servo.... assuming you want good control.

You'll need an aux channel on your tx to use it since it has remote switching between heading hold and rate mode. I don't know if it would work without the mode lead plugged in and there is no way to switch modes on the gyro itself.

I have the 7mm shaft which is strongly recommended if you have any inkling of getting the collective-pitch kit. The only downside is it weighs a little more than the 5mm, but will still work. The 6mm is better since you would not need any shaft adapters to make it work. The 7mm thickness is only in the middle, where it's needed most and is stepped at the ends so that the diameter is correct for all the other mods.

I would recommend the 7mm... do it right the first time and save yourself the cost of the 5mm shaft.

I'll be using an Optic 6 transmitter with the 401 if I go that route. Would I just assign the 401 an unused channel by plugging it into the receiver and then flip a SW-1 or SW-2 switch everytime I fly?....and does it remember the hh or rate mode setting that I used previously?

Never have seen a 6mm shaft kit offered. On the 7mm main shaft.......do the shaft adapters come with the 89$ main kit or is that purchased separately somewhere else?

Anyone flying the BT Collective Pitch stuff with the Optic 6 or does it require more channels or swashplate configs?

The 401 gyro plugs into your rudder channel on your RX just like any other but has an extra plug for the rate/HH mode switching. You need an aux channel that your radio controls with a toggle switch (I use the landing gear channel on my 8103). The LED on the gyro indicates what mode you are in.

The 7mm shaft kit should come with new bearing blocks and 7mm bearings, 7mm collars, and a 7mm tail belt pulley. I would recommend getting a tail pulley with more teeth to spin the tail rotor faster, unless you are going for 2500 and up for your headspeed. Indoors or in very calm winds, it's fine... but gusts will kick the tail around regardless of how good your gyro and tail servo are unless the blades are spinning fast enough to deal with it.

I have an Optic 6 also and love it. You hook the signal channel of the gyro to channel 5. In the TX Heli programming there is a GYRO setting. 0-50% non heading hold 50-100% is Heading hold. Try 95% and see if you get tail wag. If it wags lower the setting. I do not see why you would not want Heading Hold all of the time. HH is great and will let you fly your Corona and breath at the same time.
