Paul,

I saw that your web site does have the AX listed with the other .40-.50 OS engines, but I thought maybe Tower got the size right this time...

Maybe we should ask Bill Baxter (BAX)...

The Tower web site is notorious for posting wrong dimensions for parts.

I noticed that at the link Dar gave, Tower has turned the bearing around so the numbers can't be read. Couple this with the wrong dimensions given (if indeed they are), and it becomes difficult to source the $35 bearing from other vendors.

Tim,

I am not so sure about that.

Many bearings, especially those sourced in China (PRC), even those of very high quality, do not have any marking on them.
All the marking is on the box, in which the bearing (or bulk of bearings) was packaged.

...Yet they all fit perfectly and outlast the OEM bearings that are fitted in some engines.
I never had any bearing from Paul (RC-Bearings) ever fail and they are from China and are unmarked.

Maybe that specific bearing is sourced by OS in China...

Dar, my post was before the morning coffee had kicked in. What I meant was, if a person was doing their first bearing change say, and found the bearing number at the O.S. site, then went to Tower to source the bearing, they might get the idea that there is no other easy source if the dimensions given are wrong. They might fail to simply measure their old bearing and proceed from there.

This is super. The man got his answer in many different ways from manyd different sources around the world. Somebody ought to copy all this data off and put it in a technical manual for us model airplane flyers. But then just as it gets published, electrics will take over. Ugh!

Cheers,

Chip

Tim, Chip,

If a set of Chinese bearings for an OS engine from Tower, costs $55 and RC-Bearings can offer the same (albeit longer lasting) for $6.97, I guess the alternative source is the only logical way to go (Mr. Spock?).

Dar, I wish Paul would offer the option of bearings made in countries other than Communist China. I would be willing to pay more for these bearings. This is maybe not logical, just a personal preference.

That would be quite difficult, Tim.

This is because most of those Japanese and European bearing companies that are known for their quality bearings, have moved the whale's share of their production to China...

It seems WIB of Switzerland, that makes bearings for Jett, Nelson, Profi, MVVS and a couple of other specialty model engine manufacturers, will be the last one that produces their bearings in Europe...

I found the same thing on Tower parts. OS uses a 15x28 mm bearing in their medium size engines. The rear bearing in a tower engine on the part page at tower is shown as some smaller fraction of 15x28. I bought one just to see. It miked out at 15x28. I think tower does that so we won't buy the cheaper bearing for an OS or some other engine that uses the 15x28.

I remember reading of the industries targeted by the Allies during WWII. Ball Bearing plants were on the list. It's a shame when strategic industries are now mostly located in one country. It puts the rest of the world at their mercy.

Bearings are made in most developed countries. Watch India carefully. They are about 5 years behind China in production capability and are not behind anyone in quality capability.

The reason I don't offer bearings from other country sources is why would you pay me more for a bearing you could get from other sources? I do not have the buying power to compete with them and most of these sources have insane minimum requirements for a small business. I have taken several years and many sample bearing purchases to arrive at the two manufacturers I use for my bearing suppliers. Both of these have proven to provide quality bearings and are very responsive to my requests. I have tried to work with Japanese manufacturers but unless I can finance their next Lexus, they don't even want to talk to me.
