Looking for information on r/c friendly lakes that allow float flying
all year. Some of the local lakes are open on float fly day but otherwise closed to r/c. Thanks

Status: offline 		Hemet Lake was open in the early 90's. Haven't been down there since then.

Where in SoCal are you really looking for? It's a big area.

Status: offline 		I'll go anywhere within a couple hours drive. I don't mind the drive, my concern is getting to the lake and being told I can't fly or being harrassed.

I looked on a road atlas and the lake is Perris Lake, not Hemet Lake. Perris Lake is southeast of Riverside. You might want to check if there is a club at Lake Elsinore, too.

Status: offline 		I wound up at Lake Piru today and flew my Falcon Ready for the first time on floats. It was incredible!
I spoke to the Park Ranger at Piru and he said it would be ok to fly there. It is only a 45 minute drive north of where I live. It cost
$25.00 to rent a motorboat and there are no r/c clubs anywhere near the lake, so the chance of a radio hit is much less.
The whole experiance was great. Fish and Game came over and
asked me to fly the plane again so they could watch

The only drawback (?) is that I can only fly there in the winter. In summer it will be too crowded...but then I can go to the float flys instead.

Status: offline 		Piru is actually very quite during the week all year long but usally after 11am - noon the wind picks up, I used to go there fishing quit a bite years ago, nice to here the Ranger was cool with you,

Perris has been around for years. With all the growth in So. Cal, they needed another resovoir and Hemet is the place for it.

When I lived in the area, I belonged to a club called T.I. Fliers. AMA may be able to help you contact them. "T.I." stood for "Terminal Island". We flew near the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro. The only time we couldn't fly was when a ship was passing through or when the propane tanker was loading. However, as you may have guessed, it is salt water. They also have a large paved runway.

Status: offline 		Thanks for the info. I work down there all the time and have not heard of an r/c runway there...I'd be curious it it is still there with all of the development going on. Not sure about the salt water, though. I have thought about flying off of a friends boat over at Catalina- still salt water but much more stylish Do you know what pier or area you were flying from?

Status: offline 		Dave, if Orange County? Anaheim to be exact, isn't to far. Look up in the AMA, Anaheim Model Airplane Club or SCAMPS, they both fly at the same place. And once a year they empty the pond for a couple of weeks. You do have to join one of the two Clubs. Hope this helps. Danny

Status: offline 		We were flying at the closed down Todd Shipyard. At the north side of the west end of the bridge. From where the cruise ships and Catalina Express are docked, drive under the bridge. Like you said, there is a lot of development in the area and the entrance has been moved several times. They have been moved to other sites a few times as well. The water is always flat, and can easily be cleaned from your plane after the day is done.

Status: offline 		I flew in the L.A. Harbor from '72 to''91. Worked at
Todd's too. Flew CL at Torrance High until '72, and
went into R/C at Watson Ind. Center in R/C in '72.
Flew there till they ran us out, and went to the
"strawberry fields" at Crenshaw and Sepulveda.

Flew there for years...and flew gliders up on P.V.
Hill. Also flew at the "Birds Field" at Wilmington and
the "91"....where I met Joe Bridi. Ever heard of the
"Flying Machine" in Lomita ? Nice little LHS. Gene
(the owner), and Dan (the owners son-in-law) became
friends on contact. I worked a block and a half up the
street at the Yamaha dealership.

Gene passed away, and I don't know what happened
to Dan....but my friend and I got "word" of a special
place over on T.I., where about a dozen guys were privy
to. Joe was there too, and I flew there until about '91.

Any mention of L.A. Harbor flyin'....brings back 20 Yrs.
of good memories to me. Take care.....

Know there used to be many of these little secret spots around
Seams like in the mid 70's the # of Lawers with to much time on the hands, Caused private proprty onwers to close these spot from fear of law suits,, At least we have the memories

BTW,
Does anyone know if the club (Name?) in O.C. still flies at Huckleberry Pond on the weekends?,, If they still do this is a great club to join if your hooked on Float flying,, Smallish lake but big enough to have fun at. Maybe someone remembers the name of the Club?
