HI ALL, received my instrument assembly from IFLYTAILIES. com and happy to report that I was very impressed with the quality. Unfortunately I could not use the dash as supplied because it did not fit the Barth 1/3 scale Waco so I made my own backing and happy with the result.

Rain?  Did someone say rain?  I had to cancel a Scale Fly-In today for our club here in VA. We had over eight inches of rain in a two hour period. Our field and part of the runway was under water. It's the first time that has happened to my knowledge.  We are going to give it another try Sunday.  LOts of the low areas in the city were flooded with hundreds of autos either under water or with water half way up the doors.

I was in the Porta-J ohn when lightening struck a pine tree about fifty feet away! Talk about something getting your attention!!!

WOW!

Joe

tmac, I had the same trouble with his 1/4 scale dash appears to be large enough for a 33%er, another episode of live and learn.
I've tried to reply to your PM but there seems to be glitches in the system, thanks for your input.

On the actual subject of building PICA WACOs, I have must completed the kit a bought through RCUniverse a few months ago, and feel like showing it off a little.  Following several suggestions posted in this thread, I made the horizontal stab adjustable and had landing gear struts fabricated from sheet aluminum, including an inner brace which is spring-loaded to absorb landing shocks.  The plane is covered with 21st Century coverite and painted with water-based paints from Ace Hardware.  The graphics were made by Cal-Grafx, and the whole plane is clear-coated with Ace gloss clear polyurethane.  The plane is powered by a DLE 30 turning a 18x8 Zoar prop.

The plane has completed two flights, and after trimming, behaved very well.  Although it turned out a little heavier than I had hoped, the DLE 30 provides plenty of power, and landings are very gentle, with virtually no bounce.

Jmdunstan,
Congratulations sounds like you have your self a fine flying Waco she certainly looks good. I’d be interested in seeing pictures of your aluminum landing gear if you have any.

chris. I have really started to get the gremlins on this site now, most of the time I get shut down because of a possible virus threat stopping me from logging in. Regarding the dash I really did not expect it to fit my Model because I realised that it was not specific to the Barth kit. All is well looks good enough to me.

Hi Tmac

A little off subject, but when you applied the perimeter tape to your wings, did you have to cut it to avoid wrinkles when it was applied around the curved surfaces like the wing tips and the elevator ends or did it shrink nicely. I'm using the tapes from Scale Ribstitch out of Solartex.

Also do the wing root fairings overlap the balsa of the wing roots? This would mean that you had to cut the wings to slot into the wing root. Please put some pictures on the site to show me how you did this.

Regards to all

Errol, I suggest you do a test with the perimeter tapes on a curved area to get proficient at it, (I wish I had) I found that if I concentrated on securing the tape all the way round the tip in the centre only, then with the iron at a pretty high temp you work on the outer edges sort of shrinking and sticking down as you go. When I first started I got horrible results but I did get better at it in the end.
Regarding the wing to wing fillet, yes I know your dilemma hear also. I just kept sanding back the trailing edge of the wing until I could get the wing to slide all the way home.
As far as the tapes are concerned maybe some one else with more experience might jump in and enlighten the both of us.
Do get back on how you get on.
Regards tmac.

tmac48:

The "teardrops" on the cowl were individually stuck on.  It took a little doing, but the thin vinyl supplied bu Cal-Grafx is so pliable that I was able to burnish it onto the compound curves of the cowl blisters.  Once thoroughly dry they were sealed on by the clear coat.  You have probably guessed that I did not use the decals that were included in the kit because they are yellow (called "cream"), and I wanted white graphics.

To apply perimiter tape I firmly seal down the trailing edge at the last inch at the center of the tape. I then sit in a chair and with the wing held vertically between my knees, wing root at the floor, and pull like hell while ironing down the center of the tape along the tip frame.
You'll see the tape trying to conform to the upper and lower surfaces of the tip. Once you're at the leading edge all that's required is to iron down top and bottom with extra heat sometimes from a heat gun being careful not to shrink the tape width wise. Practise with some scrap material on a similar structure so as not to ruin that expensive pinked stuff. Mitch

Hi Guys

Do you ever feel like you are going nowhere with your plane, because that's the way I feel lately. I think that I have taken too long with this project. I've been covering, painting parts, making light covers, work, work. Dozens of parts are ready to be put together. Here are some pictures.

Regards

Don't burn out on this project Errol. You're 90% done.......only 90% to go. Wacos are a diabolical test of patience designed by the devil himself. Mitch

Errol, I have to agree with you I'm in the same boat, I feel like i'm getting nowhere fast. Great fotos, your much further along then I. Your landing light shades are a work of art. I think Mitch hit th nail on the head. It is a test of patience designed to break the best of builders. It seem that the more you do the more there is to do.
I'm still futzing around wiith the wings, I lost the lower ones when my engine fell off the bench and destroyed them-MURPHY STRIKES AGAIN-there rebuilt now to put the guts back in. Your bird is coming along and looking great, KEEP THE FAITH.

Hi Tmac

I do not have any photos of the dash in place, but I have made a backing panel on which to mount the panel. What I can do is mount it temporarily to give you an idea of what it will look like.

The bracket is actually a counter weight that is attached to the bottom ailerons, supposedly to stop flutter. There is actually a name for these devices, but I don't know the name.
Stickbuilder you will know.

Chris, you once asked me about the weights

Thanks for the kind words of support. The problem is as you progress, you tend to want to add more and more detail, and you become more and more critical of yourself to the point that you sometimes ask yourself whether you are building a plane or a Swiss watch. My late father once told me that you must do things properly or not do them at all, and that's my philosophy.

Thanks guys for all your support

Yep, they are called counter balances. Can't even think of a better term for them. They are supposed to equalize the weight of the control surface at the hinge line.

They ARE counter balances but in aircraft lingo they're called static balances which differentiates them from aerodynamic balances (usually some surfaces area forward of the driven surface). My Waco has counter balances built into the ailerons which allows them to be weightless in relation to the hinge line when in a neutral static position. In my mind it was a good thing to do since only the bottom ailerons are servo driven on my project. Mitch
