Re;  Aluminum landing gear struts

After only one day since I posted my offer I have 3 commitments for aluminum struts for the 1/5 scale Pica WACO.  The unit cost is now down to $82.  The next order will bring the price for all buyers down to $75.50.  I will wait a couple more days before placing the order with the fab shop to see if I get additional inquiries.

Jim

Are these the inter-plane struts?

Re:  Aluminum struts for the 1/5 scale Pica WACO

For those who did not see them earlier - and I can't find the message in this very long thread - here are a couple of photos of my struts and mount.  The struts are 5052 aluminum, 1/8" thick.  I use a 1/4" bolt that passes through the strut base and supporting ply plate to spring-load the inner brace.  This puts the spring force directly into the plywood mount, but makes assembly/disassembly something of a pain, since I cannot unbolt the struts to access the belly area without removing the t-nut on the spring.  I used a t-nut because it is much easier to assemble onto the end of the bolt than a separate washer and hex nut.  If I were to design this assembly again, I would probably cut back the edge of the plywood so the spring could mount directly onto the base of the strut.

Re:  aluminum struts for the Pica 1/5 scale WACO

I must now close my offer of the subject struts.  I have received 4 confirmed orders, and have released the fab shop to make the struts.  I am willing to consider other requests with the understanding that each new order will start at $115, including tax, and that each additional set with the same order will add $70 to the total.  These are my cost.  My practice, just begun, is to divide the total cost among all buyers within one order.  Shipping is additional, at my cost.

Gentlemen.

Regarding the making of the aluminum struts, there is a cheaper way of making then. I used the K&S struts and modify then by cutting the trailing edge lenghtwise and bonding a brass tube for strenght, and sanding to the correct shape. Also I used Dubro's 1/4 turnbuckles cut at the center of the barrel and soldered inside of the brass tube for adjusting the lenght of the strut.
See page 500 for some pictures of my model.

I built a fixture to reshape the round tubing that I used on my Cabanes. I use a drill press to apply pressure when reshaping the tubing. Here is another picture of the completed Cabanes all silver brazed and ready to finish. I'll be using the fixture to make my Interplane Struts too.

HI guys,

I'm thinking about ordering the 1/5 scale Pinked tape that Mick Reeves sells. It's the correct width for two inch tape with the correct number of pinked point per inch. Only problem I can possibly see it's is made from the Iron on solartex fabric he sells, and I would be appling it over a doped (three coats of Nitrate) Koveral surface.  My question is this: will ironing this material over the doped fabric cause any problems? As for the rib stitches, I may use the wood glue (like doing rivits) over the ribs prior to adding the tape.  Would the heat cause a problem with white glue?

Another way to do the rib stitching would be to lace heavy thread over a piece of fabric ( at the propper spacing of course), and dope it down, and then cut it into strips the width of the ribs and dope it to the fabric prior to doing the pinked tape.

Comments, warnings, etc., appreciated.

Joe

Joe, You might think about, that ironing the Solor Tex over Kover all might shrink your kover all.?? I haven't done it just a thought.

I have used solartex tapes over Koverall and it is not an issue. I get my tapes from Gary Siebert at Pink-it.net He offers them in many sizes.
You will want to seal the edges of the tape down after you get them applied. I usually use Polycrylic for filling the weave of the fabric and I give it another coat after the tapes are applied.

For Rib Stitching I get them from Scale Rib Stitch.
Later!!

Hi Guys

Busy covering now with Solartex. What a pleasure! The best covering material I have used. Pink it and scale ribstitch also the best in the market.

I'm having a tough time deciding what to work on. I'm torn between the Ryan ST-A and the Waco. Maybe a little here, and a little there.

Hey Bill, you and I have the same dilemma! I too am torn between the Waco and a Ryan STA. I have the Pica 1/6 Waco kit, and have a Technopower radial to go in it (though it is currently pulled apart for repair). But I also just bought a 1/4 scale Ryan STA kit, and have an O.S. IL300 that might find a home up the front of it. I actually now have 4 Ryans. I have an old SIG Ryan that I am converting from STA to STM-S2 (all polished metal), a Great Planes Ryan ARF (currently with busted wing, and out of action), a spare SIG Ryan kit in box, and now the 1/4 scale kit. As you might be able to tell, I am a Ryan fan!!

If you need any Ryan photos, I have a bunch that I took of the Temora Aviation Museum's Ryan STM-S2 here in Australia.

James.

I'll be doing mine in the Maxey Hester scheme. I'm using a ZDZ 40 rear intake rear exhaust that Dan Hudson was kind enough to let me have. Here is a pic of the model in progress. Its a Byron Original kit (now much modified).

Looks good Bill. Yes I saw this on another thread on the Ryan. How scale is the Byron kit? Any obvious errors?

I just wish they had used a build up wing. The outline is on the money, so yep, you can really scale it out if you wish. The landing gear is really a Rube Goldberg lash up as far as mounting the wheel pants go. There are about 8 or 9 pieces that have to be bolted together to make everything work. Once you get it set up, I see no problems. There aren't too many formers though, and I felt the need to do a little in the way of making the firewall stronger. They used a piece of 1/8 inch ply for the firewall, and I bumped it up to 7/16 aircraft ply. I mean, really, a flimsy firewall with a ST 2500 or even a Quadra hung on it..........Notnunname.

There is just something about hanging a 40cc engine on that flimsy piece of ply that bothered me. Won't be using it.

Got one of the leading edges sheeted with the 64th ply and got it faired in. Guess it will be okay.

The more I work on these wings for the Ryan, the less I like them. Grrrrr. I really hate fixing what someone else designed. They would be just okay for flying, but to make them ding proof and more scale takes more time than it would to frame a set up.

Bill,
A local guy is building a 1/2 scale version. He showed me some pics during our Father's Day Fly-In at our club field. Nice looking plane. He also sells plans for a .60 size, 1/4 and 1/3 scale. Here is a link to his web site if interested. Alien-Aircraft

I still plan on building a giant STA one of these days. My work is sending me to CAD classes next month. I want to do a full design in CAD including scale struts.
Later!!

Anthony, this one is a quarter scale version. The struts are about the only thing on the wing that Byron did right.

By the way, did Ryan use landing light/s on the ST-A, and did they use any Navigation lights. I am having a problem finding any photographic evidence of either.

The YPT-16 Army version at the Wright-Patt museum does not have any lights. If you are going to model a military version then I would not add lights.
