Bob,

no elevator at all during take off, the Waco will get airborne immediately and might be too slow. I never used a second servo on any of the Wacos quarter or third scale. I never thought that I would need one but may be its better, there is of course the advantage to have two different throws due to expo. Let me know your experience. But do not give elevator directly after brake release. The Waco will lift the tail immediately after the engine will built up higher rpms, so if you give elevator the fuselage will get airborne more or less after 3 to 5 meters which might be a bit to slow so close to the surface (not good for landing gear and prop).

Where have you been stationed over here (Frankfurt, Ramstein or Munich area)?

Peter, I was stationed at Rhein Main air base. It's no longer there I'm told. It was back in the late 60's during the cold war. I visited Berlin too and saw the wall etc. Went through East Germany and saw that too... Im glad people came to their senses and stopped all that.

I was reading some tips on taking off the full scale Waco. The FIRST thing they advise is to LOCK THE TAIL WHEEL! It's fully castering for taxi and then locked for take off. Of course you have a bigger heavier bird and it takes more runway.. so it may not be necessary on the model. Interesting never the less

Hi Bob,

so their is a slight chance that we may have seen each other. I was living in Darmstadt a city close to FAB. The Air force had their also a place and a nice NCO Club which we visited some times when it was an Air force club later on it was army. My school was just near by and we liked to go there during our brakes to have a Hamburger and a Coke. In the early 70s I was working for Lufthansa on the opposite side of the landing field. Now I'm living in Munich.

Hi Chris and others,

Have a look at my rudder/tailwheel servo setup. I made my own servo arm from carbon fibre. The distances between the ball links are exactly the same as the distances on the tail wheel arm and the rudder horns as per the drawings. This means the wires run exactly parallel and also means that the tail wheel has a lot less throw than the rudder. I hope I am making sense. The servo is a Futaba BLS351 (15.6Kgs @6.0V) which is more than adequate for both. This may help you in your deliberations. It is these deliberations that take hours of your building time and drive one mad.

Regards

Errol,
Nice work with the carbon fiber. What are those velcro pieces for, batteries maybe?

Making the windshield Frame, Installment #2.

As I said in my previous post, I did not like my first attempt at making a fiberglass windshield frame. The biggest problem I think was I was using a cloth that was too heavy and it would not lay flush with the surface at the corners. The other problem was using frisket film as a release agent for the windshield. That in itself was not an issue, it did work as intended, but I didn't have the frame stuck down to the airframe well enough to get good sharp corners at the bottom edges. I had left extra frisket film at the edges hoping it would stick to the film on the fuselage and it didn't.

My second layup was done a little differently. After covering the fuselage with plastic film I taped the windshield to it along all of the edges that touched the fuselage with a clear tape.  I then applied two coats of PVA mold release film to all surfaces that would possibly see resin. I'm using Z-Poxy finishing Resin for the layup. This worked very well. I used a much lighter glass cloth, I'm guessing it was about one ounce per yard, and the weave allowed it to mold to the surface quite well. I cut it into strips about an inch wide (too wide) and around five inches long. Given the thickness of the cloth, I figured I'd need about 8 to 10 pieces for the required thickness.

As you can see, the layup went very well. I kept the resin to a minumum by using each layer to soak up the excess resin from the previous coat until I had applied what I thought was enough cloth. I learned another lesson here also.  You will need to try to avoid letting the corners get too thick by letting the strips lay accross each other at the ends. It will be a little messy, but try to make each strip just long enough to lay alongside of the pieces joining it in the corners. You can overlap the end pieces similar to the way bricks come together at corners,  tying the corners together.  This will prevent the neccessity of having to sand down the overly thick corners where your cloth doubled up.

I think you can see what I'm talking about in the photos below  Sorry about the two similar photos).

This layup went very well, and after a lot of sanding to eliminate the heavy corners, I have something I may be able to use.

I was going to do my windshield frame like I did the last one from Brass and balsa, but I've decided to do this one from aluminum angle and sheet. I'll see how well it goes.

Windshield Frame Installment 3

This is the current status of my second frame.  At this time, I'm pretty happy with the results, but who knows. The third time is the charm, so they say.  I may do another one before I finish the project.

Hi Bill

Thanks for the compliment. Yes the straps are for two six volt Nicad packs. They will both feed into a Smartfly EQ10 to give me power redundancy. See the pic below.

The smaller unit is a relay for my landing lights.

All my electronics and servos are on removable trays, and are connected with colour coded wires. See coloured shrink sleeving.
This way I can remove the trays to gain access to the inside the plane.

Regards

Jay,
That looked like to much fun. I thought about taking that rid many times. I took my granddaughter up in the other biplane about 10 years ago that was fun.

Dan,

It IS great fun. I would recommend it to anyone whether they have any flying experience or not. Rob will have you do however much of the flying you want to do. This was my third flight with him over the last 6 years. I make it part of my scedule whenever we visit that area.

Bill, are you using Byron's foam stab and fin or did you build those up also? I have the Staggerwing that needs a set of wings framed up.

Jim, I used the stab and fin that came with the Byron kit. If I had realized earlier on that I was going to frame up the wings, I'd have framed up the tail group as well. Unlike the wings, they seem to be okay. Get after framing up your staggerwing wings.

Got to looking at the build last night. I may just cut away the tail group and scratch it out too. Don't know why, but it's kinda-sorta like looking at a mountain.............Because its there.

Bill, you are correct I need to get after framing up those wings, but after all those months of work were lost on the maiden, it will have to go to the back of the queue. After all I still have the WACO to complete.

Hi Bob,

it changed a lot. New hangars on the West end have been built and offices for all the people involved in air fright. The air base is now used by civilian aircraft and their are two new landing fields on at the west end of the old runways which is only for take offs and one in the north closer to the city across the autobahn also only for landing. They have bridges for the aircraft to cross the autobahn to get to the terminals. Term A, B and C have been built larger and their is a new term 2 in the east of term A,B,C. So you would be astonished how much has changed. You should visit Germany during spring or summer and join the one or other model event or fairy. The Dortmund show which is in April is far bigger then Toledo or New York model show which I both visited this year.

I was near Stuttgart in a small town named Swabish Gmund ( probably wrong spelling ) in 1969-70 with the U.S. Army with a Pershing missile battallion. Beautifull country side.
