Interested to hear the weight you're able to build these Wacos at after paint
Is it unrealistic to be thinking 14Lbs or less with a 3Lb radial

Mine normally come in at about 15 pounds and change with the OS 160 twin. It depends on how much scale detail you want to add. I suppose that you could cut a little weight out, but since I do have to modify the nose area to accomodate the radial mounting of a large engine, I feel that that mod will negate any minor weight savings that you can find elsewhere. A chunk of 3/8 plywood will always add to the weight of any model. Especially when this piece of ply is about 11" in diameter. Even at 16 pounds the wing volume and wing loading is still in a good ratio. Remember this plane has abour 1500 square inches of wing area. It is pretty dirty in the drag department, and you do have to keep a little power in on final. All in all, it;s my favorite plane to build and fly.

I remember flying the 1/6th Dave Platt YMF, little bit of power on final as well

This was my first YMF, it was the scarf that got me hooked

I noticed your tail wheel is not quite scale, I was thinking along those same lines, glad to see yours.

One question, it would really help me out if you could tell me the length, front to back, of the fiberglass Cowl. I have not yet received mine and since I have modified the firewall, I would like to figure out how much spacing I need for the cowl mounts.

Status: offline 		I always put a little caster in the tailwheel. Not much, just a little. As for your question about the cowl, I can give you the dimension on mine, but mine is the ABS unit that came with the kit. It measures 5" front to back.

Status: offline 		Lordy, About the time I start thinking like that, reality jumps up and smacks me in the face. I don't think thay are ever finished. They are just a work in progress. I have spent years adding detail, or changing something that does not look quite right. I've had my Corben Super Ace for about 15 years now, and just the other day I finally added the backstay brace for the radiator that looks right. Whoodathunkit after all this time.

Wrong, the next pic will be right after the color sanding and compounding and waxing (can't forget the wax). The wing incidences for this one are typical of most model Biplanes, in that you want the lower wing to stall first. As to the horizontal stab, there seems to be quite a bit built in, but I suppose that is to allow the tail to stall last. This thing will probably require some down elevator to fly level. This one does not call for any down or right thrust. I'm using the OS, FT 160 twin. It balances with no additional weight added. I still have hours and hours of color sanding (2000 grit wet or dry) and then more hours of compounding, then that much more in waxing. It will still be some time before the maiden flight. Be patient young grasshopper...all things come to he who waits.

Thanks for the pics, never mind about the size. They are useful at adding impetus to a lazy builder. By the way, RED is somehow an insignificant word for the colour of your model, it really looks GREAT.

Those evil little humps for the rocker covers are looking great, not the easiest area to refinish. They put me in mind of a mistake I made many years ago. I was seconded from college to a local main dealer to "gen up" on the latest painting techniques. I laid a particularly poor coat of paint on a set of louvres (forget which car). I was told in no uncertain terms I would have to remove the lumps. I was introduced to "Scotchbrite", it's a sort of fine fibre sheet 6" by 4" by 1/4". Coarse versions of this are used for mechanical floor scrubbers. It took off the rubbish painting very effectively and much more easily than the wet or dry I expected to use.

More please, I'm very impressed and looking forward to the next installment.

Status: offline 		I'm very well acquainted with the 3M Scotchbrite, "Goof Eraser". The 3M 2000 grit Wet or Dry, is almost non-abrasive. It does provide an excellent foundation to buff to. My young Grandson who was down from Nashville this past week, said that it looked like a red mirror to him. Love the honest appraisals of the children.
