Interplane struts, something that has not been talked about much. I had it all worked out in my mind, went and purchased the aluminum K&S streamline tubing got back to the shop pulled out the strut template and now I'm scratching my head. Can't weld it, can't rivet it, thought I could join it with ply, any good ideas out there?

In the 50s M/Cycle mudguard (Fenders?) were stayed with tubing. The tubes were flattened and bolted through for a fixing. In is critical to pack a bit of the flat material in the tube before flattening and the flat should have a decent soft radius between the round sction and the flat.

Sorry if this is too crude for scale fans but I'll bet there were aircraft constructed that way.

When I worked on aircraft, DC3 and Vikers Viking (1950s) the Alclad (dural clad in aluminium) had to have a radius of 4 times the metal thickness when bent. That meant bending 1/16" thickness around a 1/2 round bar. No scratches allowed, aluminium is very notch brittle, mark with a wax crayon or felt tip, NOT a scriber.

Sorry if my info' is crude and unsuitable but that's me all over.

John,

There is nothing crude or unsuitable about your posting's at all. Every thing that is posted here concerning these old rag bags is pertinent. I'm thankful for any input.

To: All,

I think that I have straightened out the number mixup. Evan was posted twice (it happens when people use multiple names). Chris now has the lower number, and we are not as well off as I had previously thought. Still need more members.

I used the K&S tear drop tubing on the 1/5 waco I just finished. I flattened the ends and trimmed and bent to fit the wing and angle. Iattached them with 4-40 SHCS that go into the threaded holes in my wing tabs. Of course, I had this plan from the bigginning. My wing tabs are .094 aluminum that I drilled and tapped holes into.
Now remember, I never started this plane with the idea of it being scale. I have mods on it everywhere. I built it to be an impressive sunday fun flyer.

here you can see my wing tabs. When I saw the plastic pica tabs I said "no way". These tabs are L shaped .094 aluminum pieces held in with both with a ply doubler against the rib as well as a #6 wood screw into a ply floor piece. This is also a good pic for those who are considering going with a servo in each wing which I highly recommend.

So has anyone had experience with electrifying one of the 1/6 scale YMFs? It's quite a drive to the nearest gas field for me,so I thought I'd give electric a shot. Sure gonna miss that 4 stroke sound, but not the clean-up!

Hey Stickbuilder,

That ultimate in your avitar - is that a Patrick plane? If so , what are you powering it with and how do you like it.

The state of the art in electrics allow you to just about take any gas model and make it electric with very satisfactory results. Call hobby lobby and tell them what you have and they will quote you everything you need. They are experts on electric. You can always take their suggestions and use them to do comparitive shopping also. If you have big bucks and use lipoly cells you can actually end up decreasing the weight of your gas aircraft by going electric. Now matter what direction you go you will spend big money to go electric with big models.

(Here is a thread from the Netherlands. Guy has a 1/5 Pica waco)
Sorry for the english, bud I fly an electric Pica Waco.
I have to be fair, it has done only one flight up to now.
I fly it with a ROXXY BL OUTRUNNER 5065/09 (45a continious, 50a max)
and with 6s2p LIO-Ion battery pack (22v, 4400mah, 50c max)
it further has Cyclon Pilot 100 controller (100a continious, 120a max)
it swings a Topflite TOPQ5220 - 18 x 8
The first flight was a nice, I had lift-off in les then 10 meters and a 45deg. climb without any problems. Landings was also fine.
By the way, it ways in at about 6,5kilogram.

Ron,

Could you or anyone else translate that? The english part is fine, It's the EE stuff that I get lost in. Looks as if his WACO tips the scales at 14.3 pounds.

Looks like a decent electric setup for that weight. If I recall correctly, 100-150 Watts per pound is a good figure for this type of airplane, so, assuming the 18x8 props the motor correctly to pull max-ish amps, this setup will produce about 1980W (figuring 10c or 44A from the battery pack). That's 138 W/lb.

I assume he meant 50A and not 50c max on the battery...that'd be 220A which is impossible from a 4400mAh battery.

Did I translate enough

I have done some electric research but actually do not know enough to give advice. I do know that people are successfully using electrics for big planes without any penalties other than spending a whole lot of dough. The days of saying that electrics are only for small or ultra light planes are long gone. The power and weight of both lipoly batteries and brushless motors allow you to power what ever you want often times reducing weight in the aircraft. I actually looked into electric for my 1/5 Pica and the weight of the motor and batteries would have been less than my Q35 which is 4 lbs. On the other hand, on a 8 oz tank my gasser will fly for an hour at 1/2 throttle where as with electric I would only have an 8-12 min flight between packs depending on flying style. Oh, and by the way, one lipoly pack for a plane the size of a 1/5 waco is around $225.00.
For an axi motor, batteries, speed controller, lipoly charger and balancer it would have cost me around 800.00 . My quadra I paid 150 bucks for it .

Bill, am also interested in swelling the numbers of WACO Brethren. I'll take whatever is next. While my WACO's are ARF's, I'm a builder at heart, just don't have a suitable space at the moment to lay out nice wings. I've got the UPF-7, been flying it for two+ years, just ordered the Pica/Cox YMF, and will order the Sig WRE by March. (No, I didn't hit the Lotto, but I'm still hoping)

I contacted Hobby Lobby about E-powering a Duncan Hutson Tiger Moth. To get 1700 watts at the prop I would need an AXI 5330-18 outrunner ($249), 18x10 prop ($12), Jeti Advance Plus 90 speed control ($252), two Kokam 2 cell 7.4V, 3200mah LiPo pack ($98), two Kokam 3 cell 11.1V 3200mah pack ($145). Connectors ($19), Astro Flight charger for 9 cells ($130).

My OS 1.2 four stroke (priceless). I think I'll carry some wiping rags with me.

Okay.

Khodges is now officially Brother #20.

Waldo is now officially Brother #22.

Now if we can sucker.... errrrr, make that attract some great model builder to become #21, we will be back in sequence. No problems though. We don't have to account for nothing, since there are no elected officers, dues, or any other rule but the one (hats off please) Love those wonderful old WACO's !

Here's to the Weaver Aircraft Company.

Hi No. 6,

I think it's thought transference. I finished reading through the Waco posts thinking about "I am not a Number" and the Prisoner with Patrick MacGoohan. When I returned to my inbox there waas your post complete with the Penny Farthing bike. I enjoyed the series, too short but it had a Lotus 7. I have been to Portmerion where the series was filmed, a wonderful fake Italianate village in Wales. We visited there a few times, the whole place is dedicated to tourism now. Clough Ellis? faked the buildings using architectural salvage and many other unlikely materials. The copper domeson some of the buildings were in fact Pig Food Boilers. Some of the columns were cardboard carpet tubes and the front of the main building in the square was in fact a HUGE fire surround from a Stately Home. we stayed in one of the buildings, most are available for holidaymakers. We dined in the superb restaraunt, the foood and service was terrible. Go for a drink there but do not eat.

Electric Versus I.C.

I was directed to a Watt Flier post by a friend. It was "Real Radial Sound". There were a number of modellers, many using ARTF models extensively modified. The are incororating a sound system with sound box and speakers to give the illusion that a real engine was in the model. They sounded far better than the bark of a glow job. As mentioned in another post here (Waco) the electric models are very expensive but for competition I think they soon surpass real I.C. motor power especially with the question of noise complaints. I think these people are at the cutting edge of modelling.

I find modern electronics too full of abreviations and nomentaclure to follow, I was happier with the thermionic valve. I would need a book dedicated to electric power to participate but things moving so fast any publication is likely to be out of date before it leaves the printers. I think I am too old to start another series of learning, memory ts not as good as it was, in any case I love I.C. engines and have too many to move in another direction.

If there are any typos or indeed actual mis-spellings pleas forgive me, the spell check is another function (also attaching pics) that seems to have departed from my version of RCU, any advice would be well received.

Roger that - Task Force 160 back when it was sorta a secret... Chinook Flight Engineer (Darkhorse 342 - A Co. 2/160 - 80's thru 90's) - one of the first MH-47's with re-fueling probe, mini-guns and all the goodies). What a bird! Really "shiney" when it's dark outside .
Are you (were you) 160th?

Can we at least have a secret handshake, or a decoder ring? Thanks for giving me a number I can remember. OFD has really trashed my memory.

No!

You are too old for those things (I saw your picture in the post with yer L-4) You would lose the decoder ring, and it would fall into the wrong hands, and you are such an old fart that you would forget the secret handshake and/or the password.
