Status: offline 		Thats a nice Ace Stickbuilder toyed around about building one but never did. Oh well enough about single wing airplanes . I talked to that friend of mine & I think he going to sell me that new in the box Pica waco 1/5 scale. I think b4 I build it Iam going to trace All the parts so I could build a new if something happen to it . Also toyed with the Idea of putting Satio 3 cly radial on it.There not to badly priced but that down the road have to get this vaga done first. On second thoughts finish vega second ,-- keep wife happy first.

A couple of photos of the tail end of a UBF to give you an idea for your Rudder and Elevator set up.
Photo 1 - End view of stabilizer/elevator. Stabilizer Trim Jack screw can be seen in the fuselage. Stabilizer rib profile. Attachment of flying wire to fuselage and stab tip. Rudder control cable.
Photo 2 - Top view of stabilizer/elevator. Flying wire attachment, elevator hinge. The high point of the stabilizer move rearwards from the fuselage (at the trim slot) to the stabilizer tip (just in front of attachment point) due to the stabilizer spar being set at an angle with the "ribs" sandwiching it.
Photo 3 - Rear view of rudder horn, cable, hinge, flying wire attachment, cable exit reinforcement.

Some baggage hatch and forward cockpit door photos from the UBF NC 12002 (UMF/YMF similar).
Photo 1 - Showing location in relation to cockpit.
Photo 2 - Close up of baggage hatch lock and cut out for the lock tounge This is an original as installed by WACO according to the WACO mechanic. All the WACOs I have seen in the museum have the same locks on the baggage hatch. No door handles on the baggage hatch.
Photo 3 - Interior shot of the baggage compartment.
Photo 4 - Rear view of the Forward Cockpit door partially open.
Photo 5 - Side view of door.
Photo 6 - Close up of door handle on UBF NC 12002. The mechanic says WACO used various cabinet type handles for this application.

Sort of like running a sub on the surface all the time. You can do it, but Why? We like you just like you are..........don't we, guys?

Skylark--Those are very nice shots; must be nice living so close to such great reference material. None of my pics showed a handle on the luggage door either, but couldn't really tell what WAS there. I'll have to settle for a handle though, I can't replicate a combination lock that tiny . The front cockpit door handle looks like it came from a toilet supply house (flush handle). I wonder if you pushed it down in flight if it would "flush' you out of the cockpit?

I'm about 2/3 done with the rib tapes, hope to finish tonite, maybe another coat of dope, too.

Photos 1 &2 - Here is another door handle from UBF NC 2091 (Tan/Brown). Also notice the frameless wind screens with a soft cover on the cockpit. Also a different angle on the rudder control horn (for stickbuilder).
Photos 3 &4 - UBF NC 155Y (Red/White) has a small front framed wind screen and a larger framed rear wind screen. Also note the hard cover for the front cockpit. Same door handle as NC 12002 in previous post.

Sure you can make the combo lock in a small size (won’t be functional unless you are really, really good). A couple of layers of 1/64th ply with HVAC tape or Flite metal glued on and polished and a couple of magnets to hold the hatch closed and the illusion is complete.

Yes, it is nice to have the resource nearby, not only to take the photos but to also pick the brains of the owners and mechanics. I am just waiting for it to warm up a little so there will be more owners working on the aircraft with the hanger doors open. One owner just restored a Taperwing last year and I didn't have the camera to take pictures. It is a pretty plane.

And maybe also to find an owner out preflighting his aircraft and not minding to have some "ballast" in the front 'pit?

Status: offline 		You can do your own waterslide decals if you have a decent printer for your computer. I've done them and they work pretty good. I'll dig up the info if you're interested. Any sign shop that cuts vinyl can do custom stuff (Yellow Pages).

Next time you are out at Creve Cour and have your camera, would you be kind enough to get some shots of the WACO instrument pannel? My cockpit is not going to be seriously detailed but some shots with the layout would be nice. That combined with Stickbuilders photos and maybe I can come up with something.

Photos 1 & 2 - Front and rear cockpit of UBF NC 2091K.
Photos 3, 4 & 5 - Rear cockpit of UBF NC 155Y aka Texaco 17. A Racing WACO with the front cockpit covered. Extra instuments and controls were for evaluating different fuels for racing (multiple fuel tanks). See post 1913, photo 4.
Photos 6 & 7 - Front and rear cockpits of UBF NC 12002

Also look at RC Scalebuilder, Other Builders, Rosenstock HKS WACO. Don has a photo of his finished instrument panel on page 9.

Status: offline 		John, you are a treasure trove of original detail. Those 'pit pics are beautiful. I assume you can't "drive" from the front of a UBF, at least that one. For comparison, here's a couple of cockpits from the new Classic and Super YMF's. First pic is a front cockpit, the others are both rear. Note the edge of the cockpit in the first rear shot, how worn the padding is; I assume from climbing in and out. That one is the mate to the front pit shot. On the second rear shot, note the dual altimeters and accelerometer(bottom right) I figure this guy does some aerobatics. The settings on the altimeters indicate one is set to field altitude and the other is set to MSL. The accelerometer shows limits of plus 5, minus 3, g limits.

I currently don't have a functional Waco, but I do own an old 1/6 scale version in the box that I just don't have the heart to build. It is a piece of history, so I'm going to pursue the plans from the AMA, hopefully they'll have templates soon. I'll build that one.

The aerobatic ability was one of the over 300 improvements incorporated into the Super. Did you notice the Aresti aerobatic cheat sheet taped to the left side? I don't know what the improvements are, but the fuselage was lengthened 6" (2" in front cockpit, 4" in rear) overall, widened by 3", total airframe strengthened for aerobatics to, as you said +5/-3 g's and both the Classic and Super were given upgraded avionic packages. Allegedly, the first 39 from WACO Classic Aircraft were the Classic model that were pretty much the same as a 1930's YMF. Some of the new planes even have fuel injected Jacobs engines (injectors placed in the intake tubes just before the cylinder) that are smoother running and all cylinders are tuned to give full power. If you need a blank WACO Id plate, here's one.

Jay,

I use pull-pull for the tail surfaces (rudder and elevotor) Most of the time, I utilize a bellcrank driven by a short pushrod. This way, there is less need for constant adjustment, and if you need to remove a servo for service, it is easier to do. Plus it takes up less room in the servo bay. Give me a call, and I'll walk you through it.
