Ken,

Same time, same place next year. You are welcome to come out anytime. I took over 180 pictures of the YMF, over 90 pictures of the DH-4/Desmond, over 60 of UBF-2 Texaco and a whole bunch more adding up to over 1000 pictures total. You took a bunch yourself. One of the neat things about CCA is that it is dynamic, in that things are always changing as planes are restored, bought/sold and events like the Waco Fly In are held. Ask for a picture of a certain part of the YMF, I probably have it.

Ken, I love the detail on your model, (post 2953) particularly the way that you faked up that pilot dummy to resemble a typical WACO model owner!

Bill,

Here you go, remember these are of a 1987 YMF-5 Classic, not an original 1934 YMF;
1 – Inside of wheel pant
2 – Front view
3 – Inside of wheel pant, ¾ front
4 – Upper outside of right fairing to leading edge of wing
5 – Top of pant, lower fairing, and gap for oleo movement
6 – Front view of left, inside of right fairings
7 – Inside right fairing
8 – Right side of tail wheel fairing and the tow hook for banners and sailplanes

How about a picture of the rudder and elevator showing the style of rib stitching they may have used etc?

Hughes,

Didn’t have any shots that the show the stitching well, but here is what I do have of YMF Classic, NC 14081:
1 – Wide shot of the rudder and elevator showing the 4 fairings, tail wheel, rear fuselage, rear rudder and forward rudder. Also note how thin the stabilizer/elevator is.
2 – Closer view of the stabilizer/elevator. The airfoil is more of a long diamond than curved.
3 – Shot of the ground adjustable rudder tab.
4 – Not the best shot of the rudder stitching, but you can see the two rows of stitching and the top of the front fairing.
5 – Close up of the front rudder fairing and stabilizer profile. The ribs are just straight back over the main stabilizer spar that runs diagonally from the front inner corner to just in front of the rear outer corner.
6 – Elevator stitching can be seen. The shape of the rudder fairings can also be seen. Note rudder tab offset, rudder horns (w/springs and fairing over exit).
7 – Elevator hinge, reinforcement patch and flying wire attachment point.

I believe it!!!

Thanks for the photo's John.

I did the filler on the wing fillets on mine last night. This one should be the best one yet. I plan to make the Landing gear covers, spats and cuffs scale. Same with the fairings for the vertical stab, and the bottom of the wing as well. It sure is taking longer than any of the previous YMF's, but I think that the final result will be worth it.

Bill,

Don't forget the reflex in the wing fairing bottom as shown in pic. 4, post 2860, page 143. It's another one of those little details .

If you guys need higher resoultion pictures, send me your e-mail via PM and tell me which one you need (ie; picture #, post #, page#) and I can send them to you. Most picture are about 2-3 MB in size and it takes about 8 minutes per MB to send on dial up out here in the sticks.

What--you mean the silly, spaced-out blank stare that comes from huffing too much Ca and / or dope fumes? I actually had a picture of Stickbuilder that I used for reference. I figured that with as many WACO's as he's built and has yet to build, he was as typical as you could get

After thinking about your reference to that # post, I went back and looked to see what the picture was, I didn't remember posting the model. I guess I should apologize to John (skylarkmk1) for the comparison I made. NOT the spaced out look comment, but the reference to Stickbuilder comment

MobyAl-- If Jay will do it, more than fine with me; this is for everybody. The model as built by Pica will need some mods to make the fuse around the gear mount more like the ARF, with a removable belly pan between the gear, but that might be handy to have, it will allow some access to the inside without having to remove the wings. I also gave Jay some drawings of my tailwheel fork, as well as a horseshoe-shaped one that is accurate for all other WACOs, including the cabin models (my squared-off one is only scale for the Classic and Super types). With a couple more pieces (Jay can figure it out) it can be made like the one for the 1/4 scale Palmer model.

Pic 1 is the Palmer assembly, pic 2 is my original , pic 3 is the revised setup next to the first, unsprung one, and pic 4 is the revised sprung setup in place. Pic 5 is what I thought Old Git referred to in his post. The stare IS sort of similar.

Hughes, these are UPF details, but if you can zoom them, there should be some helpful rib stitch detail, same/ similar to the YMF. I also included a couple of interesting shots from the inside of a wing, showing how the rib stitches lock together from top to bottom. On most of these finely finished planes, the stitching is fairly subtle, not readily noticeable unless you are close, or the sun catches the cover just right and makes the small irregularities stand out.

Hey Guys,

I recently purchased a Pica 60 sized YMF, from a friend. The kit is complete except for the construction manual. Does anyone know where I might be able to pick one up or get a copy. There are a lot of things that are left unexplained on the plans. Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.

John,

Did the original YMF have that reflex, or is that part of the Classic? I don't recall my Grandfather's YMF having that. Seems that the rear portion of the fairing came in a bit lower, say one stringer lower. Could be a result of a faulty memory, or it could be the case.

You can get a copy of the manual by contacting SkylarkMk1. He has the manual available that you can access via this thread. You just need to look back a ways. The manual does not provide much information, but perhaps it will be helpful to you. Wanna be a Brother?

Ken,

I got a little bent out of shape, but Janelle looked at the pic of your pilot, and did manage to see a little resemblance (Drat)

Ron,

Go to this thread's supplimental site http://www.houseofmoy.com/waco/ . There you can find the short, 17 page revised manual in PDF format and download a copy. I hope to get the more detailed, long 45 page manual revised and posted soon.

Bill,

I can't say for sure, having never seen an original YMF/UMF, just the Classic, NC 14081, but you could be correct. Look at the 2 pictures I have attached. The 1st is NC 14081 and the rear tip of the fairing appears shorter and like you said, one stringer higher. The second picture is from the NWC files of a 1937 Cuban Navy UMF, the tip appears longer and lower. I haven't found a picture that shows the underside of an original YMF/UMF.

Dan,

Look at the leading edge of the wing in the vicinity of the tip block. The planform for the ribs should follow the shape of the L/E.
The next to last rib looks like it needs a wee bit of material removed from the top. Lay a long straight edge on top of the ribs, and check that that rib does not stick up further than the rest. Your slight taper should begin inboard of that rib. Other than that, a little work with some 400 grit wet or dry paper (dry) should have you in business. Looking good.

Stickbuilder,
Thats a big 10-4 on the number, and I will probably need one of the t-shirts if they become available again. What numbers are still available? I was just turned on to this thread and have only gotten into it about twenty pages so far. It looks like you guys are not using the plastic corrigated aileron covers, is there some special reason why?

skylarkmk1,
Thanks for the info, I got the manual coppied, haven't had time to read it yet.

Thank you guys, very much I'm sure I will have a lot more questions. I hope you are patient.

Ron,

I don't have the kit, I am building from plans, but from what I understand, the plastic covers do not have the correct number of corrugations which is 34. The full size ailerons are aluminum and are just primed and painted, no fabric on them. Photo 1

The plastic tank cover is not correct for the newer YMF Classic which is smooth without the groves, just button head rivets. Photo 2
