Gentlemen and ladies.

May I be enlisted in this club?
I got a 1/5 Pica Waco from a garage sale, this airplane either took a hard landing on the r/h main or something was dropped on it. I have repaired all the damage there was, and want to modify it to a UMF-3 and paint it as the ones from the Cuban Navy.
Has any one built a UMF before? it appears to me from looking at pictures that the edge, or rim of the cockpit of the UMF is higher than on the YMF. also what is the distrance from the forward edge of the opening on the aft cockpit to the aft edge of the forward cockpit and what is the lenght and width of the forward cockpit.
Also I need to know the length of tne interplane N struts as I don't have them or the aileron push rods.
Any help will be greatly apreciated, differences between the two models.

gracias much.

Angel Miniet

damfino,

Received my Tee shirt today, over the moon with the quality and the artwork, now I need to go to a meet' and show off.

I cannot thank you enough for all the work involved in getting these shirts to ALL of us, even those of us from outside the bounds of the USA.

While I am at it, thanks to all those whose efforts have contributed to making this thread a high point of the day.

Angel,

Welcome aboard.

The main visual difference between a UMF and the YMF is the engine which required different "Bump" cowls;
UMFs have a Continental engine with paired bumps.
YMFs have a Jacobs engine with evenly spaced bumps.

I don’t believe there is any structural difference in the fuselage (cockpit area) between the UMF and YMF. The outline for the forward cockpit is shown on the plans. See the House of Moy site (http://www.houseofmoy.com/waco/) for PDFs of the plans. I think the vertical fin and rudder were enlarged between the -3 and -5. Looking at the pictures in the NWC album there appear to be slight differences in rudder shape (bottom radius of rudder) between individual planes.

On the Cuban Navy UMF-3, #26, shown on the National Waco Club site, pictures 63 thru 67 of the F3F5 album (http://www.nationalwacoclub.com/f3f5album/index3.html), the UMFs pictured have the smooth cowl with a slight taper to the rear.
Looking at picture #66 (3 flying in formation) there appears to be a different color on the top wing, possibly yellow. The cowl color is unknown, possibly Red or Blue.

Claude McCullough found, during research for his Top Gun entry of his Cuban Army WACO S3HD-A, #23; the wings, horizontal tail, cowl and spats were Chrome Yellow, the fuselage, fin, all struts and fillets were Aluminum. How well this color scheme fits the Cuban Navy Wacos is unknown.

Skylark.

Thank you for welcoming me into the group.
I had noticed the Cuban Navy UMF cowlings to have no blisters and I would think the wings upper surface colors to be lighter due to the sun fading them out.
The fuselage could also be white as if it was aluminum/silver I don't think it would show so white on the pictures.
I had a conversation with Mr. Mc Cullough regarding his outstanding plane, I may do that one on the 1/4 scale ( if my wife don't kill me first ) but I want to finish this one first, I will try to contact the person in Cuba he got his information from, as it turns out he is a friend of a friend of mine. Also Mr. Dan Hagedorn, curator at the Smithsonian is supposed to be an expert on latin american aviation, He may know.
Does any one know if there a UMF at a museum?

Thanks.

Angel

Angel,

According to the FAA, there are only 6 UMFs on the registry. Since the Aerofiles indicate only 18 were made and 7 exported, that's pretty good. There are 3 in Ohio, which would be the closest to you.

P-2 – Close up of the top front mount, part with spring is the tail wheel lock.
P-3 – Picture of the Tail Wheel tube fork from the front, wheel hub profile can be seen.
P-4 – Picture of the Tail Wheel tube fork from the rear.
P-5 – Picture of the Tail Wheel tube fork from the side. Pivot point and lower shock mount can also be seen.

Hey Snowball - glad you finally figured it out!! Now we have to get our new partner Kel, who has also decided to throw in with us and build a 1/5 Scale Waco from the Pica plans, to follow suit. Better get a tee shirt while there are some left.

I'm trying to convince damifino that we need to have a second edition shirt. A different color this time, so that we will all know which edition is which. I think that if enough people want shirts that he will do another run. (hope I'm not speaking out of turn) How about it? Who all would be interested in another color of shirt?

Welcome to Angel and Ron.

Bill, AMa 4720

I was reading this thread last week and noticed that in a span of a couple hours the pages jumped up from the 120's to the 140's. Seemed weird so I went back a few pages expecting either a TON of new pics... or a flurry of discussion. Wasn't the case. I'm guessing that whoever controls the thread page content / volume reduced the amount of posts per page for whatever reason. Which kinda sucks because I have saved a lot of pictures for future reference with the page number as part of the file discription. So if I go back to the page in the picture description to read anything related to the picture, it aint on that page. It jumped up about 25 pages or so.

Todd,

I normally refresh the roster every 10 pages. I was expecting to update it at page 110, but it was already at page 149 when I looked. I have no idea what occurred, other than they changed the number of posts per page.

I appreciate the positive comments and am happy you all like them. I have five XXLarge tees left. I have a lot of summertime things to do including a vacation coming up soon, so, I'm thinking another run of shirts will happen sometime around the first of September. We also plan on getting a design set up for embroidered items like hats, jackets, polo shirts etc. It will take time and I will keep everyone posted right here.
