Jim,

Here you go with the strobe, tip lights and antennas on 1987 YMF Classic NC 14081.

P1 Strobe Light on
P2 Strobe off and 2 (twin) long blade antenna mounted either side of the center line, dome type antenna, whip type and rear short blade antenna and strobe mounted on the centerline
P3 Front short blade antenna
P4 Front view of the antennas
P5 Starboard Tip Light
P6 Port Tip Light
P7 Departure Start, note pitot tube on top left wing directly in front of struts
P8 Departure, note strobe light is just forward of the wing notches, directly under the rear seat back

The Waco YMF-5 I modeled was built in 1998 by the Classic Waco Company in Michigan. At that time they did offer a strobe oiption but the owner of N56ED elected not to get it. The strobe is mounted center of lower wing both ways.

Master Chief! I thought you liked building from a pile of sticks. Might as well do the ARF if you want fast and easy!

. Your plane is DEFINITELY the exception rather than the rule. But it just seemed to me that aelerons made out of wood - to scale - would not be any harder or time consuming than building the tail feathers... or the fuse or wings for that matter. Just a Doggie thought.

Bill, I used 8-32 socket heads, and used Blue Loctite in addition to split lockwashers. I haven't had to tighten them yet.

Nightstalker, the styrene sheets are the only way to go. At 1/5 scale, the amount of work you save by not having to cut each of those little pieces, align them, glue them down, and sand and fill until the wood is smooth enough to pass for metal is well worth whatever little is given up to scaleness. 99.9% of whoever looks at the finished product won't know the difference in how many ribs there are supposed to be, and you can always tell the 0.1% who do to kiss your a$$ when they point it out to you

. Of course, if that 0.1% guy is either bigger than you, or is the only Top Gun judge between you and 1st place, then maybe it would have been worth it to do all the extra work.
I'm sure the difference is worth it in the larger scales, just because the details get bigger.

While we're talking detail, BTW, I was in A C Moore (craft store) the other day, and found some tiny, tiny brass brads over in the dollhouse area. The heads on these can't be more than 0.25-0.5 mm and they came in two lengths, about 3/16 and 1/4 inch. A bag of 100 was about $1.50.

Don't get me wrong Ken. I was just messin' with the Master Chief because he was chastising the flight characteristics of my beloved 'Hooks (back in the day... err... night)

. And in all honesty, never having built a (serious) scale model airplane - let alone a WACO - I was just curious as to why plastic over wood. I am the first guy to go with plastic over metal at my work unless it absolutely needs to be metal. Time is Money... and machining something out of metal when plastic will due is a huge waste of both of the aforementioned.

Todd,

It just takes over 200 of the sticks sanded to shape, and glued in place. There are other means of doing this that look just as well, take less time, and are far lighter. I'm thinking about making a buck out of wood, and forming mine from aluminum.

I'll let the ARF crack slide (this time)

Hello to all

I've been in slump for the past few months and haven't worked on the Waco at all but I've keep up with the thread. All the information that's been posted has been great. I'll get back building soon. Just seams like last week we hit page 100 now look. Welcome to all the new Brothers the list just gets longer & longer.
Well think I'll go and clean my shop I always feel better with a clean shop.

Just thinkin' out loud here...but if when I wire the top wing for running lights - I could attach the pos. lead to the port cabane strut connection and the neg. lead to the starb'd cabane strut connection and then pick up the connetion inside the fuse from each cabane to the switch. Then when I screw on the top wing I will make connection with the cabanes and I will make the circuit and all will be hidden!..I think!!? Any problems with this?

That works great

then all you have to do is run 2 wires to the sturn. and up the stablize to the top. Been there done that works out well with the switch in the instrument panel. Solder the wires in the top wing to washers.

Welcome to the Brotherhood. You are now Brother #71. It just worked out that way this time. We do try to accomodate special requests for numbers, but we can't take someone else's number away from them. We have more than one ARF'er in here. Man, do I know how you feel. I haven't touched a plane in four weeks, since botching a landing and skinning up my Waco, plus breaking a wingtip; this on the heels of almost totalling my L-4. Tony V, it don't matter whether you're an ARF'er or not; they'll dress up almost as nice as the kits do. I do ARF's and kits both, depends on what I can find in what I want. Flying is the main thing. Welcome to the Machine.

You want some Navyspeak words to use? Well, there is %$^& ^**#, and there is &^% %$ $ *&^#$, then there is, +!@#$%%^%$%^&^, followed by a few, &^%^&^$, and if all else fails, you can always say, &^%%%^%$$$%$###$^&&. I guess that about covers it.

Ken,

Sorry about missing the post where you answered my question.

I found the spacers at Ace Hardware. I'm going to need to shim them just a tad. I can add an extra fender washer, and they will be perfect.

Next time you are in the store with the brass brads that you were talking about, if you can get them that cheap, I would be happy to pay you for them (and for the shipping too). I need a couple of bags.

Not to get away from building/flying WACOs, but did any one of you old errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr navy pilot types fly in or out from Guantanamo Bay Cuba, in the late 1950's B.C, ? ( Before Castro )

Just got my new issue of Model Airplane News and was pleasantly surprised to see Ken Hodge's YMF in all it's red and white glory in the pilot projects section on page 25. Good going Ken. I'll also put in a shamelss plug about one of my models that also turned up in the same issue. It's the B-17 leading off the discussion on Scale Techniques by George Leu on page 96.
Still making progress on the Genesis 1/3d YMF. I stringered part of the fuse just this morning. Mitch WB #100

The new Waco Classic YMFs won't get by with just a belly strobe. They need to meet the current requirements for anti-collision light systems. I'm pretty sure they all have wing-tip strobe systems.

Original Wacos (i.e., those built by the factory in Troy OH in the 20s, 30s and 40s) would be able to get by with just one strobe (belly, fin tip, or wherever) as they only need to meet the anti-collision light requirements that were in place in the late 60s/early 70s.

%^*(#@*^ 8 - #@*&^%)(@%&*$ 32. They are plenty strong, I used socket heads from Micro Fasteners. I Locktite Blue'd them and used split ring lockwashers, they haven't come loose yet, even with a couple of instances of beating up props from nose overs.
