The kink is necessary to eliminate any binding when the aileron is moved to the up position, if it were not present, the pushrod would contact the trailing edge of the wing.

Thanks Bill, that should easily be adapted to a more direct servo connection for the scale I am building. And thanks Skylark for the photos, they really help!!!

Yeah Bill,

that´s great, your construction for the aileron linkage. I wood realize it too at my Barth Waco, but the servo was to high at this place,
and the low profile servos were not strong enough. I would have the servo direct near the aileron, because of access to it.

Regards
Bernie

All,
Not sure just when I joined this group but the WACO has had it's first birthday, since I brought it at the club auction last year. Believe it or not it is just about finished. I have to put the cockpit floor in, find and install the pilot and do the final balancing on the whole airplane.
Anyway for what it is worth, here it is. I am especially proud of the homebuilt exhaust system.

Vasek,
Thank You!
It is the 1/5th Pica, with a Saito 150 for power.

Bill,
Ken (Hodges) and I have had a bit of a sidebar conversation about this but wanted your thoughts as well. As posted waaay back there, I discovered that the person who had actually started this kit had changed the mounting tabs on the top of the cabane struts. Instead of positioning them where the plan called for, the original builder turned them forward, changing the location of the monting points on the wing to be slightly more narrow than the plan called for.
What I have discovered in trying to obtain the correct balance point for the aircraft, is the CG called out on the plan does not match the location on my top wing. To clairify, the modiication has moved the entire top wing forward by approximately 3/4 inch. As shown in the picture attached, the plan calls for the balance point to be 8 3/4 inches back from F-1. When I use that reference point as CG it requires much less weight than if I try to balance on that point shown on the plan which is 5 3/8 inch from the leading edge of the top wing.
The wing incidence for both wings is 0 degrees with +2 on the stabilizer. What do you think I should use for the CG? With the exception of the increased stagger of the top wing, the rest is built as per plan.
Thanks

Jim, you've done an OUTSTANDING job on that plane, it's gorgeous. The dummy engine and spinner look especially nice.

Thanks! I appreciate the kind words.
Yep! that's him, and he's gonna need all the "courage" he can get when this thing goes up the first time.
Got the Saito back Thursday, and got it fired up yesterday, feels like a different engine, fired right up, no back fire, just sat there and idled happily away. It transitioned nicely, so needless to say I am verry pleased. ( not to mention the boost my self confidence got)

Jim, if I remember correctly, the CG of any biplane is 30% of the mean aerodynamic chord, or simply, measure from the leading edge of the top wing to the trailing edge of the bottom wing and the CG would be 30% of that distance measured back from the top leading edge. Hope that helps, and pleas, someone correct me if I am wrong.
Scott

Well, for starters, I think that you need to look at what this has done to the average chord of the wing set. I think that I would consider (1) changing the tabs. or (2) resetting the C/G to the original point plus 1/2 of the gain. In other words, if the top wing is 3/4" forward of the designed point, I would move the C/G back by 3/8". I think that this will give you a starting point. Of course, you could move it back 1/4" and work from there, by shifting the battery.

I almost think that it's not worth all the work involved to reset the lugs, and rework the wing center.

Jim,

Its looking great, I like the Red better than the original Navy Blue. The instrument panel, flying wires (what did you use?) and exhaust pipes look good (post a picture of the exhaust with the cowl off so we all can see how you did it). Find your pilot, install the floor and wind shield and it looks like it will soon be ready for that first flight.

I have a pilot that I got from Officer and Gentlemen. It is 1/5th scale and is in the proper attire for a sport pilot. Leather jacket, and kakhi trousers. He is a full pilot, so you can mount him with you cockpit bottom, and seat. He needs sunglasses, and a headset, but these can be had. Best of all, it does not look like I stole Ken from my Grandaughter.

Isn't it amazing how we can take a box of planks and sticks and come out with something like that? The guys who never build will never know the feeling that producing something like that plane gives you. It's a sad thing, at least to me.

Regarding the cowlings, Also looking at the pictures on the National Waco Club I can see that some YMF as well as UMF had either evenly spaced blisters, or in pairs or no blisters at all such as the Cuban Navy air crafts which I am working on. Also looking at the aircraft right at top of the Cuban UMF, NC 14132 has a bigger cowling and not as flat as the Cuban UMF.

The cowlings with evenly spaced bumps are for Jacobs engines, and the evenly spaced bumps are for Continental engines. Smooth cowls were also used on both engines on some aircraft.

Jim (SCM), Bill and others,

FWIW info. Nelson Hobby Specialties http://www.nelsonhobby.com/ has piano hinge in 3/8, 1/2 and 5/8 widths and also suggested using a smaller wire for more free operation of the hinges. Nelson also has a 1/8th wide by 1/32nd thick flat flying wire in Stainless Steel.

Hi Guys

Is there some particilar reason why this lengthy thread is organized back-to-front (oldest-to-newest) ? I, for one, find it "strange" to have to go to the tail end to get to the most recent. But...I'm the new guy on the block, so...

Don,

I guess RCU set it up to read like a book (you can print the thread out for a hard copy with out pictures). If you click on the link you get with an email notification (if you are subscribed to the thread), it will take you directly to the entry with out having to go through any other gyrations. If you want to reply and have not signed in the reply button will take you to a sign in page and then back to the page you were on after signing in.
