Thank you, Brad, for addressing the issue. Our group is a dedicated bunch where 1/5th scale WACO's are concerned and I'm sure that once a cowling is delivered to someone in our 'membership' the orders will accelerate. I will post comments and photos as soon as mine arrives. I hope the plug I sent you is of high enough quality to produce a part that you feel good about selling. I'm sure someone here (khodges?) would know if the same cowling will fit the 1/5th scale COX WACO ARF. If it will fit, another market exists for the part. For those of you who may have missed pictures I posted a few weeks ago of the cowling plug, here it is.......
Patiently waiting, Jay, NC (damifino)

I hope you guys that ordered the cowls were smart enough to use your credit cards. If you did call the credirt card company and tell them what is going one and you want your money back. That is one good thing about using the credit card you don't lose your bucks.
By the way I live in Vestal, NY

I respect your good natured reply to alarmist remarks about the business in question changing hands and I regret the veil of aprehension thown over both you and the seller.

Your assertions of the good practice use the card holder policy is just common sense and though it may not be common knowledge, no one should be offended by that. Good luck to both you and Aerotech's outgoing Executive Officer in each of your future endeavours.

Brad,

We all appreciate your attention to our (my) concern regarding this issue. I am anxiously awaiting the beautiful new fiberglass cowl for mine. Having to have made my own from the supplied parts has been a major aggravation over the years. Guys, if you haven't ordered your cowl yet, you should consider doing so.

Bill, AMA 4720
WACO Brotherhood #1

ps...here is a pic of the cowl that you make from the kit parts. Time invested: 12 hours minimum. cut out each individual blister, glue each blister in place, fill and sand each individual blister, finish sand the entire cowl......12 hours easy.

That's less than an hour per blister, Bill, you musta been at flank speed (Conn, Sonar. I have cavitation noises in the workshop area )

The result is damn nice. I imagine the Stan's cowl would fit the Cox ARF, maybe needing some minor mods. My cowl is slightly flattened at the bottom, not perfectly round. Not so much you really notice it, but enough that it will only fit one way.

I've been at work on the cowl this morning, adding the line that represents the two halves of the cowl and the holes and the latches. I have to wait for the paint to dry, so that I can attach the latches and then repaint the whole cowl one last time. I will post the pics in a couple of days. You just can't rush things at this point.

Ken,

Is the flattened area a result of the cowl ring forcing the cowl to take on that shape, or was the cowl molded that way?

Here is a photo of the cowl at this point. I hope that you can see the deliniation line that represents the two parts.

Still working on the stinkin' cowl. Ken, it looks as though I'll have 24 hours tied up in it by the time it's finished. I'll be lucky if the sucker doesn't weigh half a pound too.

Tony,

Looks as if they tried to match the bottom of the ARF fuselage. I think that the round cowl will work just as well on the ARF. The kit version is flattened a little on the bottom of the fuselage as well.

I am going to be selling two of my Pica YMF kits, either here or on eBay. Anyone here will get first chance to purchase either one or both. I have one 1/5 scale that I am building for myself and selling the rest. I have a 1/5 scale and a 1/6 scale that will be sold. I also have two Pica 1/6 scale interior kits that will be sold also. If anyone is interested please send me a PM. I am in Mesa AZ and will deliver within a reasonable distance or will ship via USPS or FedEx, no UPS! My main project right now is my 33% Waco YMF from Genesis that is turning into nearly a year long project.

I agree with Tony; it's molded that way. The transition curve from the sides of the cowl around to the front is also a smaller radius than the cowl you have. I'm really tempted to buy one of these new cowls from Stan and do what it takes to make it work. Only problem is the hassle involved in removing the dummy from the present cowl. I really have it glued and 'glassed in, nothing's come loose yet, even after the last face plant.

I have the Decathlon ready to fire up. Got the electronics installed, set preliminary control throws, etc. Nothing shows except the small secondary receiver, and I just mountd it as far from the primary as the short cable allowed. Everything else is hidden under the seats and floor pan.

Ken,

If you will buy the Top Flight 9 cylinder radial engine kit, and send it to me, I will be happy to build the same one that I built for myself, and send it to you in primer. All you would need to do is to paint it, and attach the details.

All you Wacophiles out there---here's some cool trivia.

What aircraft holds the transcontinental speed record for General Aviation aircraft between 2200 and 3850 pounds?

Yep, it's a Waco. Oddly enough, the record was set in September 2006, in a YMF Classic. The record is one that for one reason or another, had never been tried for. Steve Watson, from Natick, Mass, flew 2241 nm. from Boston to San Diego in 40 hours, 31 minutes and 19 seconds at an average speed of---hold on to your hats, folks----55.3 kts, or 63.6 mph.

On these record attempts, time on the ground counts, so he had to plan carefully for fuel and rest stops. He had to complete the flight in no more than 43 hours and 43 minutes, which would compute to an average speed just faster than the clean stall speed of the plane he was flying (51 kts, or 59 mph).

The full article is in the Nov 2007 issue of AOPA PILOT magazine.

Skylarkmk1,

Can you give me the approximate dimension of the fastners that are used on the cowl latches? Are they Dzus, or are they nuts and bolts?

Wow!!!!!!

Did I ever get a nice surprise in the mail today.....Skylarkmk1 sent me a nice little letter. Inside was some of the nicest replicas of the Jacobs 225 L-4 engine data plates that you can imagine. They are perfect, and you can even read the writing on it. Now that's scale! Thank you John, I have already mounted one on a piece of foil, and have it on the dummy engine. The clear coat is drying as we speak. Janelle was speechless.

That was a very nice thing to do. Thank you loads.

Bill,

I believe fasteners are about 3/4” across and appear to Dzus type on early cowls (like you are doing) and are they same width as the straps. The YMF Classic appears to use screws and the fastening is different

P1 Dzus with scale on UBF-2 NC 2091K
P2 Cowl latch on UPF-7 NC 39727
P3 Cowl latch on UPF-7 NC 39727 Inside
P4 Cowl latch on UPF-7 NC 173E
P5 Cowl latch on UPF-7 NC 173E, Close up
P6 Cowl fastener on YMF Classic NC 14081
P7 Cowl fastener on YMF Classic NC 14081, Close up

Bill,

Thought you might like them. You are going to have to get a better camera to show how the plates look close up and mounted on your engine .

My Fuji 5000 is about as good as I'm going to get. It is far and away a better camera than I am a photographer. Janelle has been talking about getting a better lens for close-up work. I am again humbled by your generosity.

You will be hearing from Dick Watz in a few days. He is impressed as well.

John,

Did you see the cowl latch on the one that TRLambjr posted back on page 165? The latch is further forward, and uses 2 fastners on each latch. That is the one that I copied for mine, since that was the best photo that I had seen that showed the latch. I did notice that on Mike Barbee's third scale, the cowl latches look like the last 2 photos that you posted (diamond shaped with no hole visable), of course his is a model of one of the new Classics.
