Hi,
I am putting together a 1/6 Pica kit and am about ready to mount the horizontal stab. The instruction say to mount it 2 degrees positive. Has anyone played around with this at all. I thought I read in this thread something about this but now can't find it.
Red.

Hi Bill,

thanks for you welcome. As you know I have already used the thread on several ocasions and I was very happy to get hold of the CD with all that pictures of the NC 14081. I had build this one already in the past and it was the most beautiful aircraft I have every had. These white and blue colours second to none in the sky. Unfortunately a screw head keeping the rigging wire in place (I have changed that now by using two seperate fasteners) broke and off it went. This year in Augustr as I told you already I will visit the USA and go also to Chicago to visit all that very interesting Waco places. I may go to Traverse City where the 14081 is stationed and I have already a go from Weaver Aircraft to do a factory tour. Hopefully to see the sister of the 14081 which is red instead of the blue but every thing nearly te same as the 14081.

Thanks again for the welcome.

Peter

Hi Angel - I have used both the hair set pinked tape as well as the Pink-It tape. I used the Pink-It tape on my Waco and it went on fairly easily. It has to be ironed on as it is made (at least mine was) of Solartex, to match my covering. I found you had to be quite careful to iron it down firmly and all over, as the odd little bit of pinking lifted along the edge after it was painted. Not a major problem, but I notice it even if a lot of others miss it! But I liked the scale size of the pinks as they were much smaller and closer to scale than the hair tape. I just used Krylon paint over it.
Now the hair tape was much easier to apply as it is an adhesive tape. It went down easily and stuck there. But I use it with dope and it requires an extra coat or two plus a little sanding between coats to get it smooth as it has sort of a felt finish. Used on Koverall, the drill is - one filler coat on the Koverall and then apply the stitching and then the hair tape. Then a coat or two of dope just on the tape, then another couple of coats on the Koverall overall until you're happy with the finish - sanding of course between each application with 400 or 600 wet. After that the finish of your choice after a "gassing out" period.
The Hair tape was used on my Super Cub and on such a large aircraft (9ft. WS) it doesn't look out of place, but it could have spoiled the apearance I was trying to achieve on the Waco - although that is just my opinion.
I have seen some "scale" aircraft that had the rib stitching applied and then just plain tape over them without the pinked edge and they looked great. The pinking on the full size Waco I copied was very small and it would have been incredibly difficult if not impossible to copy in a true scale size on my 1/5 model. If I were to build another Waco of this size I would not worry about a pinked tape, just the rib stitching and plain tape made from Solartex. After a couple or three coats of paint the pinking just about disappears anyway and it is only visible after very close inspection. Even the bigger tape on my Supercub just about goes away. We often use pinking that it too big anyway because it creates the effect and the "appearance " of scale we want.
So there are your choices. I like the hair tape as it is cheaper and easier to obtain and use! But - make a choice and have fun!!

Hi Jim.

Thank you for the advise. I will definitely consider it, I have been thinking along the same lines to use tape without the pinking or not. As I look at my jenny from 5 feet away, I can't see the pinking edges. The question is, did they use the pinked edges in the 1930's. I am trying to build this bird as close to the original as possible.

Thank you.

Angel

Angel,

Yes, they definitely used pinked-edge tapes on the original airplanes. The pinked edges keep the tapes from fraying before and while applying them. The pinking also gives the dope better purchase on the tapes so they don't come loose and curl up over time. Straight-edge tapes tend to "lift and separate" at the edges.

Cheers!

I don't know when pinked edge tapes became available as a stock item, but it was post WW1. The earlier A/C used a straight edged tape, but with the edges 'frayed' by removing some of the long threads (Warp or Weft? Can never remember...) each side and the frayed edge helped prevent the 'lift and curl'. So far as models are concerned, if you can't see the the tape edge at a couple of feet from the full size, then that's only a few inches from even a 1/4 scaler. Given that scale judging is done from 3 metres or so, you really should not be able to see the reinforcing tapes even from a couple of feet away...that being so then it would not be wrong to simply omit them entirely, although I guess that some of us would be then offended that all that work was in vain... To each his own...

I'm still going with the reinforcing tape, rib stitch, pinking tape method on mine. Yeah, I know......at fifth scale who will actually see it? The answer is simple.......Me. I want to know that it's there.

Thank you guys for your in put.
As I want to get it done as close as possible to the real thing, pinked edges it will be. probably from Scale rib tape brand. It has adhesive allready and the stitch dimples.

Angel,
I am using the rib stitching from scale rib stitch on my 33% AMR Waco and it looks nice. My rib and reinfrocement tapes are from Pink-it. The rib stitching goes on very easy. The tapes are a bit of work but well worth the effort. I also added tapes on the fuse over all the stringers.
I used over 300ft of rib tape and about 70ft of reinforcement tape.
Later!!
Anthony

Good looking stuff Anthony! I have had trouble with some painting. I have used Krylon on top of nitrate dope. I have let it dry for a week and then sprayed it with white. Let it dry for a week than mask and spray with red. Then the trouble starts and the red paint curdles and lifts right down to the dope. Not sure if the dope itself is affected or not. Is there a chance that Krylon is using some lacquer thinners in their red? I have used a primer but get the same result. No trouble with Solartex and combining colors so I suspect the dope! Anyone else have this history? I don't want to get into the chemistry of auto paints - aby other choices?

Jim,
I had the same issue with Krylon on my 25% Waco. The Blue paint over the white did the same thing. I let the white paint cure for a week and had to be very careful spraying the blue paint. Spray very light coats, if you spray it heavy it will bubble the paint underneath. I found out the hard way on my cowling and had to repaint. I also tried spraing Krylon clear and it immediately bubbled the paint underneath. My 33% Waco will be painted with Latex, no mess or compatablility issues.
Later!!
Anthony

Anthony - Thanks for that. It confirms my bad feeling. The latex method is one I have thought of trying but being such a traditionalist, I haven't tried it. Just think - house paint on one of my beauties! But I've read Roy Vaillancourt's article and I now think it might be worth a "shot". I would use Moore's latex paint, but they say it is best to use a matte or semi-gloss paint. How would you get the high gloss finish? Would you use high gloss WB polyurethane top coat? What about the additives he reccomends? I don't know anyone who has used this method so I'd appreciate any tips. Is the spray equipment very critical? Sorry to be a pest but any info would be great!

Some paints are just not compatible with other paints. When I was doing Janelle's Waco, I had painted the red, and about a week later started to do the cream trim. It ruined a complete wing. This was not spray can stuff, but high quality automotive paint. Maybe we need to spray a coat of sealer between colors.

SuperCubman, Jim. I used Moors Water based on a DV11 and ended-up w/a rather mottled finish, which I was unhappy with. I think ROYS system must work but as with most thinks there is a learning curve. I also had crasing w/a trim color.I think I didn't allow enought time. It'll be awhile before I try it again.

If you read back a ways last year, where I worked on mine, I used Home Depot Latex colors (flat) that matched up extremely close to the original. Followed it up with Lutrecoat clear , both flat and gloss Lustrecoat at different times, with no ill effects. Unfortunately I was covering some old discolored stuff that was as bumpy as an old county road. The paint stuck like crazy and I could not complain about the results.
We won't talk about the part where I was supposed to sand it down smooth as a baby's behind this winter and then respray it......it wouldn't do a bit of good, seeing as it's nearly summer now again......

LOL

I'd recommend you get some Latex from Home Depot and whatever your intended choice of clear will be, whatever it is. The Latex will need something fuel-proof over it anyway, and Latex Gloss really isn't all that shiny anyway. Paint a bunch of test areas on some cardboard. Then cover a couple of the test spots using each type of clear to test the results. You'll know when you have a winner.

Here is what I do when paiting Latex.
I use Behr Semi-Gloss exterior paint. I thin the paint approx 40% with windshield washer fluid(the blue cheap stuff). I then add a cap full of floetrol(purchased at Hope Depot) it helps the paint flow when sprayed. I use an HVLP gun set at 26psi of air pressure. Spray very thin coats. It will take about 4-5 coats to get an even opac finish. I cleared the planes that I have painted with Nelson's clear gloss with cross linker added to make it glow proof. It isn't necessary with a gas engine but Latex is not glow fuel proof. I am sure you could use gloss PolyC for a gloss finish if you are using a gas engine.

I am attaching a couple of pics of Latex paint jobs that I have done.
Later!!
Antony

Anthony, Nice looking planes! I'm currently finishing up painting my 2nd Ikon N'WST UPF-7 with latex paint as per Vallincourts info. Anthony's got it right on the money with the process. Instead of an HVLP, I use a cheap detail gun from Lowes, about $30.00 and very easy to clean. The clear coat over the latex has been my only problem. I can't seem to get a good spray of Nelson's clear coat, I think because of the very dry climate here. Sure I could brush it, but I'd prefer to squirt it. All that said, latex has some great advantages over other paints and is well worth the experiment.
