Jay,

Take your time with mine. I will get them when you get time to do it. I totally understand. Think about what we talked about (you coming down next April for Top Gun). Frank puts on a first class show, and I'm proud to have been part of it.

A big hello to all

I charged up the 1/6 Waco last night as I had today off, went to the field this morning and fired her up she was running good my buddy was getting ready to set her down when I lost all controls the motor running but every thing was dead. Well better on the ground then in the air. I came home and took her apart the battery was dead it was only about a year and a half old. In the trash can it went I will replace it with a 6V this time.

On the good side I finished cutting out my wing ribs have a table full of balsa all I need to get is some glue and I'll get started building.

Can anyone post close up pix of the tailwheel and linkage for the full scale YMF-5? The aileron linkages several pages back were terrific for my Genesis 1/3d build. I also want to replicate the tailwheel. I've got photos covered with the fairings but none "nekkid". Mitch Waco brotherhood #100 AMA CFII

There are tailwheel pics in this monster somewhere. I think they are several pages before the aileron pictures.

Kind of hard to tell which is the model and which is the full scale is it not? Guys this is one of the things that was so impressive about being at Top Gun this year. This is the caliber of models that were prevelant there.

They look great.

Damn right, they do. WE got ours today at the WACO FLY-IN and have already recieved very positive comments from others on how damn good they look. Thanks a bunch, Jay. We (Ken and I) are getting ready to wear them to the Friday night dinner at Creve Coeur Airport. Things are great here at the fly-in, I have filled two 1 Gig cards and Ken is on his second 1 gig card. So far there are 30 WACO's at the field (more expected tomorrow); the kicker is that only one of them is a 1984 YMF-5, and it is a new Classic.

Ken got a ride for about 45 minutes in a UPF-7, flew up and along the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers.

Unfortunately we are unable to download pictures from the hotel computer and will post them when we get home.

Jay, Thanks again for the shirts

Hello All

I have started working on the wing and I have a few questions. The wing mount blocks call for maple I have some oak i was thinking of using will that work as well or should I pick up the maple?
Also I used 5/32 balsa for the ribs and I'm thinking maybe I should have cut some holes in them to lighten them up?
One more things in the past I have used white or yellow glue to build with it takes a little more time to dry but I have had good results with it. I have not read any thing about glue preference and would like to hear what you have to say about this.
As always your help is appreciated.

Dan,

The ribs can be lightened, but don't get carried away. I would try to use the Maple if you can find some (try Home Depot or Lowes or even Michaels or Wal-Mart) in the craft departments. The Maple is not as prone to splitting as is oak, and it is a little lighter as well. As to glue preferences, I think it is more a matter of personal preferences, but I don't like C/A especially with accelerator. I would rather see you use one of the aliphatics such as Titebond II or one of the other water based yellow glues. This is especially true if you are going to use a finishing resin on the sheeted surfaces. Resin does not want to cure where the accelerated C/A has been used for some reason. It takes overnight to cure the yellow glues, but you have additional working time, and I believe a better joint. It also sands better than the instant glued joints. Them's my opinions, and are worth what they cost you.

Well, never let it be said that insanity doesn't reign in this house hold! I am attaching a couple of photos that all of you will recognize almost instantly ! Yes, it is a 1/5 scale Pica WACO, that I purchased today. I have not inventoried the kit, but there are only a couple of wing ribs that have been punched out and they are in the box. The airplane belonged to one of our club members who has had it for some time but it was never built. Included in my purchase today was the fiberglass cowl along with the ABS cowl. All the little bags with small pieces are in the kit and 99% of the wood still has the rubberbands around it. From what I know, this must be an earlier kit as it has the 13 page instruction manual, and is the "blue box" The die cutting is very good and the kit appears to be in very good condition.

Well local technical issues have delayed the posting of photos. hope to have them up in a couple of minutes.

Computer has been tricked into doing what I want once again !!

Bill and the rest,

We (Ken and I) have been talking, sweating, taking pictures, sweating, been asked about the Brotherhood, sweating, explaining what we are all about, sweating and have talked with quite a few RC/Full size guys and invited them to look us up. I got my UPF-7 ride today, what a blast. Had to take my hat off, it was in the way for pictures (and my head is a little more aerodynamic with out a hat ). Did I mention that we have been sweating in the 95° heat, low breezes and high humidity? Pictures in a few days, will have to sort them out a bit. Most everybody that flew in will be leaving tomorrow to go home.

A special event for a very nice gentalman from England, Mr. Desmond Ponrose, a former deHavilland (sp?) Test Pilot, was allowed to fly solo in the DH-4 I posted pictures of a page or 2 back. He was absolutely thrilled to do so and became emotional talking about the experiance and opportunity to do. Even though this was not a WACO, it was one of the major highlights of the event as most of the members watched his flight. Congratulations Mr Penrose.

Hey Jim,

Use the ABS cowl to make a YMF cowl, you already have the fiberglass UMF cowl. The trick will be to find a UMF that was converted to a YMF and find the documentation.

I thought it would be a YMF with a swapped engine? Thus the need to place the different cowl?
Oh well, Pica must have had a reason to do what they did. Not sure why I even brought it up.

Bill:
Did Brad ever get an ABS in the standard YMF config?

Bill,

Thanks I value your opinion. I will pick up the maple and use for the wing blocks & I do use the Titebond glue I 'll check to see if it is the # 2

May be one day I can drive up and have a look at your Waco that would be great. Thanks.

Ihave it all recovered and repainted but a strange thing happened here
We had a contractor come in to reshingle our roof from hail damage from when you were hear and you would not believe that it rained again and we lost the sheet rock in three bed rooms from watter in the atic. Luck I moved my planes all out to the shop and they did not get damaged. But it sure put a stop to my building for a while

Larry,
That is terrible! I sure hate to hear that you had water damage to your home. Was the contrator responsible for the leak or was it because of the hail damage back in April?
Sure hope your home owners will cover the repair to your house, but no amount of money will repay the aggravation and inconvenience of having to deal with roof and ceiling damage!
Hope you had a good fathers day despite the leak!

Well, the planes are all gone here at Creve Coeur Airport; well, the ones that came in for the fly-in at any rate. Fly-in is over, people flying out this morning headed for Idaho, Michigan, Wisconsin, New York and other places hundreds of miles away, all in planes built over 60 and 70 years ago, but looking like they rolled off the assembly line yesterday. The entire alphabet soup of WACO's was here, UBA (only three exist, two were here), UBF, UPF, ATO, ASO, QCF, SRE (once owned by Frank Borman), YMF, Taperwings, and several others I can't remember. Only one word to begin to describe it, and it's a poor one : INCREDIBLE

John (skylarkmk1) and I witnessed some history today. Although it's really not part of the WACO info (off-topic) I think you'll enjoy hearing about it. We met a guy named Desmond Penrose, nice English gent almost 80 years old. He was one of the principle pilots at the Shuttleworth Museum in England, and was also a test pilot for deHavilland Aircraft for over 40 years. Today, we were privileged to watch him become only the second still-living pilot to ever fly an original deHavilland DH-4 biplane, and the only living English pilot to ever fly one. He was not born when deHavilland built this plane back in 1920, but has flown almost every type of deHavilland aircraft in his career except this plane..............until this weekend. The restorer (and chief mechanic and pilot) of the DH-4 at CCA put this man in the "driver's seat" and told him to take it around the field (solo), which he proceeded to do after less than 5 minutes of cockpit familiarization. He did four or five take-offs and landings on two separate days and put more than 45 minutes flight time on the aircraft. He handled the plane like he flew it every day, You have to see this thing to believe it. Wingspan of 40 feet, big Liberty V-12 that spins a twelve foot prop. The engine turns a max of 1800 rpm and makes 400 hp. It sounds like a flock of Harley Davidsons flying over when it goes by.

I'm still here in St. Louis, won't have my pics downloaded for a couple of days. Skylarkmk 1 will probably have some up before too long, so get ready.
