Thanks for your reply, how does the Saito handle the WACO? I do not have any experience with the Saito, but have been trying to decide on the new 125 or a 150. From what I read there is only a couple tenths difference in the rated bhp, do you have any feeling or suggestions on whether the additional weight and physical size of the 150 are worth the small gain in H.P?

The Saito handles the WACO with authority, for the most part I fly it at half throttle,naturally when doing aerobatics I always power up, in my own opinion I feel that this is a perfect match
My WACO is the 1/5th size, a few of the guys I fly with all say the same that its a good match.
Another point I might add is that when it came to balance for the CG I did not have to add any weight at all. In summary, here again my own opinion,I feel that I made a wise choice.

Status: offline 		I have a 1/5 WACO kit on its way up from Texas so I should be seeing it soon. I also happen to have a low time Saito 150 GK with the twin plug head sitting in a box waiting for something to happen. I was going to sell it but I guess now I don't got no stinkin' excuses. Funny thing, this is the second Pica Waco kit I've owned. I sold the first one off then kicked myself for doing so. Not this time!!


Addendum:
I received the kit in this morning's mail! I believe it may be from the first production run as the cover art on the box shows a blue airplane with yellow trim and it is marked as the YMF-3. I think the previous kit I owned was a white aircraft trimmed in red and it was marked as a YMF-3/5. Stickbuilder can you elaborate? Going through the kit the wood selection is very nice with lots of lite-ply bulkheads and the die cutting is very clean. The decals are the vinyl stick on variety. Not sure if I'll use them.

You probably got a kit in a box that had the label printed somewhere in the 70's. There is no definative means to know exactly when a kit was produced, since they have no serial number. If it is an early kit, chances are the plans will show some yellowing along the folds. This is still not an exact means to date the kit, since some people store kits in a better location than so others. All of my kits are boxed with the same printed label. I have never seen a kit in a different box in 1/5th scale. I do know that the best means to approximate the date of the kit manafacture is in the hardware package. They changed the terminal lug design early in the production sequence, and went to a different terminal lug (the thingies that you silver solder to the cabane wires to attach them to the wing). Mine all appear to have very clean die cuts as well. However, you can still get some short strikes even with these. (short strikes are sheets that did not get a complete strike with the hytronic press, therefore the entire sheet is only partially cut, and is more like a score than a clean die cut)

Well today I was able to rebuild the wing saddle, the wing fillets, and still managed to keep the wing at the correct incidence. Have more filling and sanding to do then off to the next step.

Looks as though all your work is going to be worthwhile. (by the way, I like the way your tailwheel looks) You guys remend me to do the tailwheel thing on my next one. The trim is painted, and I've got to wait a couple of days before color sanding and buffing. Whew!

I did mine differently this time, Instead of using Micro Balloons, I used 1/16 sheeting and small formers to achive the contour.
Still have difficulty behind the wing where they transiton to the fuse, but I think it will be ok.

Looking forward to seeing some pictures now that you have the trim painted.
About the tail wheel, thanks to you-all on this forum or I wouldn't have known the plans did not show the scale location.
The plans suggest covering the cabane wires with balsa, when you covered your cabanes did you sheet the fuse in and around the cabane wires, or did you cover this area with Koveral and attach the balsa cabane covering to the Koverall?
I can't tell from the photos which way you did yours.

I sheeted the entire top of the fuselage, with the cabanes coming through small holes cut in the covering. If you plan right, you can have the holes in the edge of one piece of sheeting, and that alone makes life easier. I then made the cabane fairings from balsa pieces, leaving one side open until later. after I had set the einidences, I silver soldered the terminal lugs into place. I then made airfoiled shaped, "feet" for the cabane fairings to set on. these feet go against the fuselage, and provide some structure for the fairings to transition into. Look at one of the color pics, and you can see this treatment. After putting on the Koverall, I aded the feet and fairings, enclosing the 4th side with a piece of balsa. Did I mention that I had tacked the 4th side already, and sanded the fairings to shape? If not, that is what I did. After installing the fairings, I blended the feet and fairings, using lightweight spackle, and then sanded them to shape. I finished them with several coats of nitrate dope, and then primed and painted everything as a unit. Hope that clears this up for you.

What I would like to see is the AMA buy at least one of the out going kits and preserve and make available the plans and instructions.
Yes the AMA has a lot of plans but they were put there by commercial interest. The AMA is slow in response to questions like this.
Since they are our museum of model building this is an area that I believe should be preserved.
A fellow scratch builder. Just give me the plans, some balsa and with a little innovation cowling's are no problem. As you note on
E-bay price is no object when it comes to bidding wars. Just trying to get people to share the plans is something else.
Most would help out but they don't know where to get plans duplicated. I have a friendly architect who is into flying and duplicates any size plan I bring him. It does not cost very much. Try checking out one in your area. Mine wants models brought in for show and tell in his lobby.

Status: offline 		The Clear coat is on the top wing (again) Now I just have to find the time to use the 1500 and 2000 grit (?) sandpaper, the rubbing compound and the wax. Thankfully, the paint stayed where it was supposed to and did not lift. (whew). I was drawn up in such a knot that you would not believe it. I suppose that all's well that ends well.

Status: offline 		Glad to hear that you did not have any more paint issues, We will be looking forward to seeing some photos when you get time.
I managed to sheet around the cabanes, and get the front of the wing fillets faired into the fuse. Got holes drilled in the lower wing
ribs for servo leads and sheeting on the center section of the lower wing. Next step will be to recover the center section of the upper wing where I made some changes in the way the prior owner had the wing attachment set up.
I will try to get some photos in the next few days when I have enough progress to share.

I have another rank amateur question: what is the difference between Nitrate and Butyrate dope? Also, when you build the wheel pants do you cover them with fiberglass cloth and finishing resin or do you cover the fiberglass with dope?
Sure glad you guys are here answer all these questions.
BTW I ordered the Saito 150 it should be here next week..

Due to the beating that the wheel pants take, (if in fact you carve them and not buy them made from epoxyglass) I would use fiberglass cloth and resin. Using something such as Koverall and dope will not have the strength that will be required, and you would be forever refinishing them. Personally, I would rather see you get a set from Stan's, Sea Commander, or even Fiberglass Specialists (even though theirs is full of pinholes and voids).

Well I got my ebay waco today, I just happen to in town on business and figured to stop at home, lucky for me I did the postman left the box on the step leaning against my front door and no one was home,I got to let the POknow about this, I don't know how long it was sitting therebut I got it. Like Michaelj2k said mine is the same description BLUE w/Yellow trim on the box.checked it all out and everything is there. Apparantly the seller is not the original owner, I found a sales receipt in the bottom of the box it reads as follows:
Mutchler's Hobby shop, Corrydon,Ind. the date was 12/1/1983 The selling price was
for the 1/5th scale WACO $ 97.95, When I read that I damn near fell over backwards
