Bill,

I did see TR’s picture. Look close at P2 (the green bump cowl) and you can just see the front latch, almost side view of it. The blue cowl (P4) also has a front latch. Here a few more view showing the front latch.

P1 UPF-7 (NC 173E, same plane as above in P4 and P5) taxiing in showing all three latches.
P2 UPF-7 (NC 32158) close up of the cowl, showing the latches
P3 YKS-7 (NC 17474) with all three latches
P4 JYM (NC 991H) showing three latches with the front one further back, no signs of another latch.

ffdg,

I modified the tank box on the one that I'm framing up now. It will easily hold a 24 oz Dubro. For the smaller box on the standard kit, either the hayes 16 oz, or the slimline 16 oz tank works well. You can even fit a round tank in this size. Check with your friendly local hobby shop, or if you don't have one of those close by, let me know, and I will be glad to pick one up for you, and send it.

I just got off the phone with Darrell, (Sierra Giant Scale) and he is doing a sketch to let me know what modifications I will need to make for mounting the scale landing gear. Looks like I will need to mount a horizontal plate or a set of rails to accept the landing gear trunions. He will probably have something for me pretty soon, and I will pass the information along, so that who ever wants to use a scale gear set will be able to do so. I can't wait to get a set in my hands. Just another in a long list of modifications to this one. It is going to resemble a Frankenstein monster with all the cutting and splicing. Should be worth the effort when it's completed. (I hope)

Fred,

Any good local hobby shop that carries a good selection of tanks should have it. Go to Tower (has the Hayes tank) and type “Fuel Tank 16 oz” (or what ever capacity you want) and all the tanks will come up. Have the tank compartment measurements handy and scroll down to the tech notes and compare the numbers.

For those that are interested. I just saw a note on RCShowcase's web site that stated Team Genesis has ceased operations. No more BIG Waco's. Hopefully someone will pick up their business.

Another company is going to pick up the Genesis Waco line but the supply might be interupted for a few months. It will be direct sales only and they will still be based in Canada. More info will follow.

Did anyone else find that F-4T was too narrow? I will have to add about 3/8" to it's base in order for the top sheeting to line up with the side sheeting. The other front formers are also narrow but sanding through the corner of the crutch should make the sheeting meet OK. I used the jpeg's as a pattern.

Jim,

The jpegs are "ok" if you check the demensions in both directions against the plans. The jpegs just do not scale up or down that well and the dxf files don't want to open with most programs. Best bet is to get the complete set from the AMA. If you want a 1/6th size, take the plans to a printer/copier place and have them make a 83.4% copy (72" ws x 83.4% = 60.048" ws, close enough). Make sure you draw known reference lines in both directions and ends of the plans so any error can be detected. A 12" line at 83.4% will be 10.008" or rounded off at 10", a quick and easy check.

You are not mistaken. F4-T is awfully narrow, and occasionally you will find that F5-T and F6-T will work better if you swap them out. I don't know why, they sometimes just do. This is not the case with all the kits, just the occasional one.

Yes - that's what I thought. I also found that I would have to bend the top stringer down to meet it and the plans show that the stringer is flat. So I added 1/8" to the bottom which raised it in the proper position and also spread the base out so the sheeting now fits.
Now the rear formers are also out a tad. I think I will install F-14T and F-9T and run a basswood 1/4" sq. stringer between them, Then I'll cut the in between forms to fit at the correct heights! I can adjust the notches for the top stringer for straightness at the same time. Fuse is coming well and aside from some "wavyness" with the side stringers, (hardly noticable) all is going well. All this comes under normal building problems but perhaps some new builders will benefit from the info.
By the way, the jpegs all downloaded perfectly and the 3" or 6" scale line measured perfectly. However I found that constant referal to the plans was necessary to true them up in some cases. For instance I made a templates of the side view of the W-5 and W1 wing ribs off the plans and used them to cut all the ribs using the jpegs for the trailing edge variations. Worked perfectly. All in all they were extremely helpful - thanks to the Brotherhood for all the work!

All,

Anyone have any experience with the RC Showcase http://www.rcshowcase.com/ RCS 140 SE or RE engines?
They are inbetween the G20 and G26 at 22 cc/ 1.4 ci and turn a 16-8 prop at 8900 rpm (according to the web site). The dimensions listed have it a 1/4" taller than a ST .90 and about the same length (not including the carb.). The only possible drawback I can see is the carburetor is rear mounted, may be a problem mounting.

I have several friends (rich ones) with the RCS 215 Radials. If they ever make one of these that will fit the fifth scale Waco, I'll go in debt if necessary to have one. They are great engines, and if the 22cc engine is anything like them, it would be a great little motor.

I have two of these engines, they are light, compact, and easy starting. Here is a photo of one in a Pica Waco 1/5 cowl. The very tip of the head will protrude through the cowl.

Brothers,

I could use some help. As most of you probably already know all of the Weaver Aircraft Company docs, drawings, sketches etc are located at the Smithsonian (NASM) National Air and Space Museum Archives Division. They consist of 55 cubic feet in 168 boxes (must be awful small boxes) and 25,000 engineering drawings. They are listed in series starting (obviously) from the beginning with the C series. Most of what we are all looking for are the F series. Primarily the UMF, YMF, UPF-7,and even in some cases the ZPF-7. Has anyone already done a request for drawings so that they could shed some light on what they requested and did they receive the construction drawings?

If anyone has had any success in requesting construction plans and sketches would they please be so kind as to pm me so I might cut through a bunch of unsuccessfull requests? The prices appear to be very inexpensive for engineering drawings but then I do not have them in front of me so that I might attest to their viability. There are in most cases in the F series drawings anywhere from 20 to 40 pages for each F series model. If no one has done this then I guess I get to be the experimental guy for the group. I sent a preliminary e-mail request in today and the site says that they will reply to me within the next 2 to 3 weeks.

Please contact me if you have had any sucess with requesting drawings. I will post an exact request form once I have the bugs ironed out and have what I would call a successfull set of construction drawings. Or at least a good explanation of how to go about requesting sets of the individual series or models. It is amazing how many models that Weaver manufactured. Here is the brief description on the company in all its forms. The following is from the NASM Archives Center, Directory of Airplanes

Between 1915 and 1919, H. C. Deuther, Clayton J. Bruckner, and Elwood J. Junkin experimented with various aircraft designs; the three formed the DBJ Aeroplane Company in September 1919. Two months later George E. Weaver formed the Weaver Aircraft Co (Waco), eventually incorporating DBJ and its assets. In 1923 the company was renamed Advance Aircraft Co, though the aircraft were still known as "Wacos." In 1929 another reorganization brought the new name Waco Aircraft Co. The company ended production in 1959. All the aircraft produced by these individuals and companies are listed under Waco.

The list that follows is alarming in content and I will leave it out here. If you want to look at the listing here is the website; Not sure if I got it all. Try a cut and paste and you should be able to get there.

http://siris-thesauri.si.edu/ipac20/ipac.jsp?session=1I944301900TI.245&profile=planes&uri=link=3100020~!55883~!3100001~!3100002&aspect=subtab13&menu=search&ri=3&source=~!sithesauri&term=Waco+OH+UMF+5+ATC+546&index=#focus

More later when I get it.

Thanks guys!

Ben,

I don't know if you have given any thought to it, but the National Waco Owner's Club may have the information that you are looking for already. A couple of members of the WACO Brotherhood are also members of the National Waco Owner's Club, and we might be able to find the information that you are looking for, more quickly than you would be able to do, by going through the Smithsonian. Just a thought.
