Hi Guys,

Just wanted to check in and say "Hey" to all the Brothers. Although I haven't posted in a while, it doesn't mean I don't read each new post everyday. I'm one of the unlucky ones who has put his Waco away for the winter, but I'm looking forward to a new build. After my current project is finished, I'm planning the Rosenstock HKS-7 Cabin Waco. I just received the plans so we're still in the planning stages but it should be fun! I can't find too many pictures of this model so if anyone can help out, I'd appreciate it.

Happy Holidays to all the Brothers and growing number of Sisters!!!

Shawn

I talked to a fellow in Idaho today who has a 1/5 scale partially built (about 1/2) who is selling it for 100 dollars, and apparently his fellow club members have seen it and he's a very good builder. He won't ship it, though. Thought maybe one of the Brotherhood might live nearby and could pick it up for a good deal. Boise Area Radio Kontrol Society, name of Ron. Area code 208. I pasted the link I found it on right here:

Just how to get in there, that's the tough part. I probably need to remove some of the bottom sheeting.

Yeah, you'll probably have to make a hole between the gear legs, like Jim did, and then patch it in. Or you could remove the entire belly between the gear legs and make a removable "belly pan". The ARF has a removable pan that secures with a couple of screws to the rails for the main gear. When in place it is hardly noticable, and if you have to get to the guts of the plane for any reason, taking the pan off, as well as the opening at the saddle with the bottom wing off, opens up the entire forward section of the fuse. I just made a small square hole that fits around the spring assembly; the belly pan goes on, then the struts attach.

Bill,

SWEET! Evenly spaced bumps, the bumps are painted fully and not the designs, YMF for sure. I'm torn between the cowl with paired bumps and the evenly spaced cowl. And I'm torn between the designs on the bumps, I'm thinking of larger designs on evenly spaced bumps. I suppose that'll matter more once I actually HAVE a WACO to build..... Found myself cruising the Proctor (1/4 scale) and Genesis (33%) sites again today.

Merry Christmas WACO Brotherhood

Charles (Garthwood)
I'd be interested in seeing more of and hearing details about your interplane and cabane struts. Right now I have a head full of ideas thanks to all the input in this thread. Yours appear to be a little different yet in comparison to what I've seen.

Bill
I look at the pictures everytime you post them. So, you go right ahead.

All
I could not resist the urge to share a picture of the "Dumas" 17.5 inch wing span Cub I just finished for my grandson.

Once again, Merry Christmas to you all.

Rick & Bill,

No, not the 40%, but I have always hankered for a 1/4 scale WACO. 33% sounds great, but the storage logistics are daunting. However, I'll bet the 33% is a thing of beauty in flight. And I LOVE flying a pretty Bipe, taking off and landing with the tail flying.....mmmmmm, mmmmmm!!! Classic Bipes have a way of flying, a feel to them...it's hard to describe it...but no other type of plane can come close to it.

So, YES, you're probably reading the writing on the wall correctly. I'll probably be neck-deep into this. And I likely won't be done anytime soon, maybe not really even STARTED anytime soon. I still have the move back to Texas, and I'd rather do that with a Giant-scale Bipe in its box than trying to keep a built-up model safe, although I've done it before with my other giants like my Spacewalker II. It can be done, you just end up sweating it every mile of the way. Best flying in the world once I get there, though. In San Antonio, you can fly pretty much every day of the year. If you're willing to brave those frigid 40-degree mornings, that is! ;^)

You've got me, I've been weighing it out. Should I buy an ARF (immediate gratification) that I can have in the air quickly, always aware of the scale deviations, or kit-bash an ARF (somewhat better), or should I just make this my last big built-up model and lavish it with scale detail? I'm much more patient than I used to be, so the details would be more FUN for me, I'm a really good pilot now so the odds of a scale beauty having a long life are very good. There's simply no plane in the world with as much class as a WACO YMF ...... So, at this point it's not WHETHER I'll be getting a WACO, it's just which one and how in-depth of a project it's going to be. You never know, I could buy somebody's built & RTF model. Oh, and then there's that carefully planned out part about getting the wife used to the idea....

Potato Chips....yeah...pretty much....munchmunchmunchmunch....mmmmm....

Jim

Khodges................that's a great idea, your pictures explains it quite clearly. Thanks.

Charles.

Jim...........thanks for the instructions.

Mainer........thanks for your nice comments re color trim. It's my favorite too. I used 21st Century Coverite, easy to work with and looks great.

Bill.............I like what you're doing and looks great. Nice to take pictures like these as you build. Excellent.

I have pictures of how I made the interplane struts, will post as soon as I get some coffee, grandkids are around me. You guys know how it is.

I know this sounds crazy, but how many blisters are on a YMF cowl? Fourteen or sixteen?

There are 14 blisters on both the UMF and the YMF. They both used a seven cylinder engine.

The Continental engine has a wider rocker box design, which makes the blisters be arranged in a paired grouping, with the exhaust rocker close to the intake rocker of the adjacent cylinder. This is the UMF designation, and every kit that I have ever seen uses this design, regardless of the advertizing. Also all aftermarket cowls were this design (until about a month ago).

The Jacobs engine has a narrow rocker box design, which makes the blisters equally spaced around the cowl. Stan's Fibertech now offers this cowl design, which is correct for the YMF variant.

Just couldn't resist it, here are a few photos in memory of an old friend I lost this year (to thieves).

Not a WACO by a long shot, but she sure was pretty for a kit-bashed Hog Bipe. Saito .91 powered, what a sweet flying bird she was. Just my everyday knockaround plane, but she never said no to me! Check out the checkerboard underneath, you can see it in photo 3.

Sorry, I wish I had better photos of her, but I had to go and grab these ones from another forum just to get them.

They are pretty cool. Here is some pics that I took this morning of the flying tail, and if you look, you can see the tubing that is the trailing edge for the horizontal stab.

Nice job on that. What kind of hinges are you using? It looks like Robart hinges on the vertical stab and flat type on the elevators, but I could be wrong.

Hi Brothers/Sisters -
I started construction of my 1/6th scale Pica WACo YMF-3/5 this morning. It will be taking longer to complete than expected due to my decision to use wood glues, rather than CA, wherever possible. I have also decide to use an OS 75AX BML in place of my OS 61FX (same mounting footpring, essentially same hight dimension c/l cranshaft to cylinder head which means I can keep it inside the cowl . I tripped across flying wires dimensions in another thread. When I find it again I'll post it for all (unless you already have it John SkylarkMK1).
My very best wishes to all for a Joyous and Happy Holiday and for a Safe and Prosperous New Year.

Dang, I did say horizontal stab didn't I? I meant to type elevator. You have a keen set of Mk-1 Eyeballs there. The Rudder is using the Robart hinges, while the Elevator is using the pin type flat hinge for operation, but will have a set of dummy hinges for looks.

If you look really close, you can see the same basic look for mine, but mine pivots back and forth, with a spring shock, and swivels with an internal shaft that is servo driven. It's a little overkill, but on this one, who will know? Everything on this one is overkill .

Rick............here's some pics. of Interplane and Cabane struts made from K&S Aluminum airfoiled tubing. 3/8ths for Cabanes and aileron pushrods and 1/2" for Interplanes struts. I have no pictures of the method that I used to attach the airfoiled struts. But what I did is follow the diagram on the plans and cut one angle at a time. Where one angle meet the other was a attached by making a V shape from aircraft ply to fit inside of the airfoiled tubing. I used 30 mins epoxy, keeping it flat on the plans while drying. You do one angle at a time to make sure that it follows the plans. I have used the same idea with the Cabane struts, instead of using aircraft ply I used piano wire to lock both angles together, using again epoxy inside the airfoiled alum. tubing. Again it should be sitting flat on the plans so the epoxy stays closer to the joint. You can can sand off the joint clean after the epoxy has cured. Not to ruin the plans I use waxed paper over the plans. You will notice from the picture of the Cabane struts the piano wire. Always make a dry fit before epoxying. I have two Roberts Incidence Meters and use them both at the time when the Wing incidence is set. I've used L brackets to attached the Struts to the wings, you can see these in the pictures. Once the incidences are set I lock them in, by drilling another hole in the L angles and screw them in the hard block. From the picture you will notice a head bolt and a stainless color screw.
I went with this method as I've seen it done. But there are always changes and improvements as you go along.
The 3/8" K and S airfoiled tubing for the pushrods are done last. The tubing is just cosmetic to match the struts. The 2/56 pushrod is inserted inside the 3/8" alum. airfoiled tubing and again epoxied, making sure that the widest airfoil is facing front and the narrow airfoil to the trailing edge. I used Du-Bro ball links, I find these to be better, less slop.

If anyone have more questions about this method please feel free to ask. I might have missed something.
Building the WACO requires patience, step at a time.

Ya know, I don't know what the actual scale hinges look like. Just one more thing to keep reading this thread to learn more.

I think I'm getting the 1/6 Cox-Pica ARF to start out with, I have the Saito 100 and that will give me something to bash during the frozen weather here. I think there is much to learn about the scale aspects of a YMF. I've at least got to change that color from Dark blue to a white with Red or white with a brighter blue.

Setting here staring at the tube and wishing we could get the parts from the good old days. Every thing is getting high tec except building supplies like I used to get from International RC Specialties like scale hinges and pull ,pull cable assemblies. The offset hinges I have on my F would look great on your new build.
And I think Jim H has one of the instrument panels
