Thought you fellow Waco lovers would enjoy seeing thse pics of my electriflied Pica/Cox ARE Waco YMF/UMF in action Saturday, during some beautiful north Texas flying weather.
It had its event debut at the Sherman, TX electric fly in yesterday. These great pictures are by Ronnie Pope.

Still need to add the fake radial that I have been preparing for the cowl, but aotherwise, all complete except for the tow link for some future glider towing.

The non scale dihedral on the upper wing still annoys me, but otherwise, I am liking it a lot! I have had a couple of fairly bad landings and the gear is holding up so far.

I find that my Waco does a little better wheel landing than a full stall landing...I did a number of wheel landings yesterday that looked pretty darn nice.

Truth is that plane WAS a retread. I just don't have the will to do it again. My next project after the 1/3d YMF will be another 4 engine job.....with twin tails...get the picture? Mitch

Yeah, the dihedral bugs me, too, but i find if you look from the right angle, it is hardly noticeable, and unless you are a true WACOphile, nobody knows that ain't the way it should be.

Your landing (picture) has the proper attitude pegged. I have concluded that if the tail starts to sag on approach, even a little, it's high time to either add power and go around, or add power and go around . Tail low on my model is as good a pre-stall warning as a wing waggle.

How does your electric behave at full power with that big prop? Do you notice much torque reaction, especially at lower airspeeds and on take-off?

Mitch, Hate to hear about the loss. Retread or not, she was a beauty. The twin tail thing, would that be prefaced by AVRO, or Consolidated As much as you like round engines, I think I can guess.

John,
Here is a few more pics of the fairing after I went and readjusted the work from earlier. I can't work on it to much, I am trying very hard to become one of those "X" Smokers since I had a doctor tell me I have a mild case of COPD. So there are days I have to leave the airplane alone because of temper control. After 36 years of the ball and chain it is extremely hard to change old habits. Any how here is the pics. Oh and I did find some more pics of different angles for a couple of 1934 and 1935 YMF's and the transition point for the fairing stops just a little past the trailing edge of the wing.

Dave,

Keep up the work to become an X, it will help in the long run.

On the fairing, it is looking good, end point is about right, fuse/fairing line looks good as does the wing/fairing line. It could be hollowed out a bit more for the concave look. Don't remember what you used to form the fairing or how hard it is but a dowel wrapped with sand paper should bring it to shape pretty quick (if the stuff is soft enough). Be sure to protect the fuselage when sanding the fairing.

I am using 30 min epoxy and micro ballons to fill in the areas for the faring, thr dowel rod idea is already in use I am using a piece of 1/2 inch about 4 inches long wraped with 80 grit paper is shapes it pretty quick. Now all I have to do is get the right side to match and I'll be good to go. I found that wraping the wing with heavy duty aluminum foil you can just slap the ole epoxy and micro ballons in place and once it is set it just peels off and ready for shaping.

It is a farily large prop...APC thin electric 20x12. The motor is a 1.60 class equivalent Dualsky X-motor 6360CA-11T. I am only running 7 lipo cells at present, so the power is more like a strong .60 or mild .90. On takeoff, it does need a noteable amount of right rudder, even with a nice dose of right thrust built in. At speed, throttle changes do not have as much effect, but they do at low speed, for sure.

I get decent full stall landings about once out of 5 tries and great ones once out of 10 tries...wheel landings are a better percentage, for sure.
