I recall reading somewhere in this thread about someone making simulated panel lines using, I believe, very thin chart tape. If I remember correctly they would apply this thin tape (maybe 1/32'' ) where they want the panel line. They would then apply thin coats of a transparent substance (maybe like polyurathane) over the tape. Then the tape would be removed leaving a slight indentation for the panel line. I'm sure I don't have this exactly correct, but I'm hoping whoever used this process will explain it again or else give me the original post number. I hate to ask someone to repeat themselves, but this thread is getting so large that I would be forever going through and finding it again. I checked all the posts under the ''Panels'' heading on the index but no luck there. I'm building the Barth 1/4 scale YMF. I have an old ''test'' wing that I want to try this and other techniques on before doing the real thing.

Thanks for the help.

Ekim, what I have done in the past is after all undercoat is applied and rubed back ready for painting,I then apply the tape, dust over it with the amount of undercoat required to cover the tape, let it dry and then wet sand over the area to expose the tape then remove by pulling it back over itself. Hope this makes sense-the sanding back is a must for it helps the edges from breaking up when removing the tape.

Here is a video that will demonstrate tmac's explanation quite nicely. This is a huge series of videos, but your info starts at #8 and if you patiently follow this guy, you will get a ton of tips on glassing. But at episode #8 & #9 he explains how he does panel lines on this 18ft. B1-B Bomber fuse. If this URL doesn't take you right there, then look it up on YouTube. "How to build a RC Jet B-1Bomber #8"

Now if I decide to copy ''The News'' aircraft or not depends mainly on wether I can get a reproducable copy of the large logo on the fuse!! It would not be a very good facimile if I didn't have ''The News'' logo! Can you advise where I might get such a beast?
Cheers

Will this one do? I was planning at one time to either build a SRE/ARE or to buy Sig's SRE ARF and do the same thing to it that I did with the Cox UMF ARF. The "News" ARE was my scheme of choice, it's a beautiful bird.

Khodges - Thank you very much!! That should do nicely, but do you have it in a larger size? I can PM you with my E-mail addresss if you don't already have it and you could then send it as big as you can!! I can reduce a lot of the pixilation this way and get a really clean printing! Thanks again I'm quite thrilled to have this and to actually see what it looks like!!

Unfortunately, that's the best one I have. The photo that came from off the 'net was only about 145KB, so it won't enlarge very much without showing the pixels. What scale are you building your ARE? Do you know anyone good at graphic art? It would be easy for them to take this image and redraw it any size you want. If you will give me the exact width from wingtip to wingtip, and from the top of the camera to the bottom, I'll make a drawing for you. I can also see if the guy we have locally can resize this photo and make a couple of vinyl appliques for you. He is pretty darn good, he's made hundreds of stars, roundels, nose art, etc for local builders around here. I haven't seen him in a while, he's in his late '70s, but if you're interested, I'll see what he can do.

You shouldn't need much larger than the bigger image available on the forum (you know, when you click the image and get a bigger one) for 1/4 scale.

Jim,

Send a note to the EAA Museum http://www.airventuremuseum.org/default.asp and see if they can help with the logo and colors. You will need to know what Brand, the color name and the color number to get the correct white, red, green and silver (trim around the green). Very often the owners are willing to help if you promise to send them a picture of your completed project.

If not, maybe Joe (Waco Joe) could get the info and maybe some pictures for you when he can take some time.

Thanks Ken, My model will be 21% scale with a 70" fuse. The plans are by Dario Brisighella. I think the Logo needs to be about 8" wide. I have played with the pix and I'm not unhappy with the results. I intend to make a waterslide decal so the background shouldn't matter too much. I have white decal paper as well so I can try putting it on that to see if it matches the white paint I use. Either way it will look good. I just need to pump up the gold a bit. I replaced the type with a style that is very close, so it will be sharp.
Thanks for your efforts and I appreciate the offer to draw it for me, but I won't put you to that trouble. Here's what I've got!

John - I will drop a note to the Museum to see if they have the colors. Perhaps I can match them up to the Randolph paint chart or even Krylon!!

Boy - watching the Steelers take one away from Favre - love it!!

Well, compared the normal level of stuff I see on this thread, this one's kinda gross.

But for me, it's pretty awesome and I'm looking forward to the maiden.  This is the Cox/Pica 1/6th ARF.  My power is the RCV .91 cd.  I have:
  • put in a control panel (printed from a photo),
  • painted the firewall and inside of the cowl with aluminum dope,
  • put in some of the rigging wires with gimp (thanks for the idea!),
  • carved the pilot figure from pink foam,
  • and generally fussed with some of the cheap hardware in this kit and replaced what I needed to.
It's about ready to go, although I think I may need to fuss with the tail wheel a bit more (or just replace it)!

Phil

edit:  Oh yeah! the first thing I did was make new interplane struts with the "N" going the right way!

Looks good to me! I've never seen a "gross" Waco and I don't think yours is. If nothing else it will make a great leaf blower!! Maiden flights are great fun and I'm sure yours will be as well!!

John and Jim,

The ARE is packed into one of the Pioneer Airport hangars for the winter, so I won't be able to get any photos of it right now. I can check with the museum guys and see if there is anything in the records as far as paint codes or what have you.

I'll see what I can find out.

Cheers!

Joe - That would be great! I've only started the build so I won't be getting to the paint part any time soon. However, I like to get all my men in a row before I start. It gives me time to source those difficult items and I can plan necessary changes well in advance without re-doing things. I have found that the paint scheme is Vermillion, Green and White with black and gold trim! Wow! If I run across the paint numbers I'll let you know. Looks like I'm definitely going for "The News". I had just started making the wheel pants for the 20951 or 20954 in case I didn't get the logo, but I guess I can put them aside for now!! Just need to get the cowl from Fiberglass Specialties. Thanks to everyone for their help.
By the way, the "THE NEWS" logo prints out a lot better than the artwork might indicate. I've not done any further work on it but I'm confident I can get it "good enough" without compromising too much. If another shows up in the meantime, so much the better.

Would anyone rather I went to another forum to talk about the ARE?

Absolutely not. If it's about anything to do with a WACO it belongs here. That, plus you are a member of the Waco Brotherhood. Nowhere does it say that it's only about the UMF/YMF versions. Just wait until I start up on the 27% UPF-7.

Hi Guys,

Just a heads up...I was on RCU last night and typed in Waco in the buy and sell section and was shocked to see an ad with a picture of my Waco on it!! I posted to his ad saying the picture wasn't the plane for sale and I see this morning he removed the picture. The ad is here : http://www.rcuniverse.com/market/item.cfm?itemId=566968. I posted the picture back in 2007 here: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_5133404/anchors_5935087/mpage_17/key_/anchor/tm.htm#5935087. He used the third picture on post #416.

If anyone was interested in the ad, I'd advise you to hold onto your money as I'm not sure he even has a Waco for sale or if it's a scam!

What do you guys make of this?

Shawn

tmac,

Looking good. Suggestion - Use longer mounting straps in the wing that are about 3/4s the depth of the spar, just a little extra security. P1 is from a 1937 YKS-7 and the straps are in the upper right section of the photo. There are 2 wings, leading edge to leading edge and the straps are black or grey.

P1 - YKS-7 wing section.

tmac48 - Struts are looking good. Presume from your comments that these are mock-ups and you will make operating ones from streamlined aluminum using the fittings shown here. Good stuff!

skylarkmk1 - these are some photos you posted "way back when!" showing the Grimes Retractable landing lights. Unfortunately, as you know, the Waco ARE has these and I am thinking of adding them to my model. Problem is actuating them. Do you have any info on how the full scale ones operate? I can get some really small servos used in indoor electric stuff to actuate them. I have a few thoughts but it would be interesting to see how the big ones do it!!

I see the restored version at the EAA doesn't have the "passing light" so I may not include it in the model. I'm trying to stay away from "over detail scaling", but maybe not succeeding!
