The Paul Matt drawings (all of them) are also available on 4 CDs for those that prefer that format.

The Paul Matt CDs are definitely worth a look. Lots of very interesting drawings and cool information on a wide variety of aircraft. Definitely worth the price of admission!!

Cheers!

Joe

Are there any plans in the near future to get a new batch of Waco Brotherhood shirts?

Neil Kilchriste
Waco Brother # 142

Yes, there are plans to get a new batch of the shirts. I have been trying without success to reach Jay (damifino) who has the connection to the place that did the first batch. We were on track to make at least one more run, but Jay's place of employment was sold, and he had to start job hunting. He has been heavily involved in building Street Rods for some of the Nascar drivers, and that is taking all his available time. I tried to call him this weekend, and got no answer on either his cell or his home phone. If I knew the name of the company that he uses, I would contact them direct, but I have not a clue as to who they are. They have the artwork and the screens already set up. Starting from scratch with a different company would probably be cost prohibitive. If the Brotherhood wishes, I can try a different company, but it will mean changing the Brotherhood logo enough to not infringe on a copyright that the original company may feel as if they own, since they designed the original. Ideas and suggestions would be appreciated.

Speaking stricktly for myself Bill, One like the originals would be fine with me, as it would, as you said bypass a new set-up fee. I would say either way is fine but it would be best to give the original gentleman another call or two as time would permit and hopefully gain the name of the original outfit. As, for me though. either way is fine with me, I would just like to have one to show off at the field and the local club meetings. Hopefully, something will give. Thanks Bill, for the response. Im sure Im not the only one that is curious.

Does anyone have an idea on how to duplicate this appearance on a 1/4 scale model. Obviously I don't want it to be operative (would be nice!!) but just to give the impression. "The News" also was shown with a spinner, but I find it hard to spend upwards of $100.00 on one from TruTurn. Have not found another supplier with the AT-6 shape.

Jim,

I can’t tell you how to make the hub but break it down into sections such as the shaft, hub, counter weights and control arms. Glue the parts together for static display.

The blades (with a round shaft near the hub) you can get from Solo Props http://www.soloprops.com/Default.htm for about $28.50 each for a 20” prop, $31.50 for a 22” prop. The whole Solo Prop assembly (Blades, hub and Hardware kit) will set you back about $250.

The real trick will be to get those blades polished up. See the thread in Warbirds on the Ziroli P-38… by Metal-Morphous for an idea http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_7369268/tm.htm

SRE NC 58785 (Yellow/Green) had a spinner in place during the 2008 Fly In but a crack was discovered and the spinner was removed before the 2009 Fly In.

Jim,

I was at CCA Monday and of the 2 Wacos with landing lights, the UBF had 2 ea. of the 8” and the YKC had 1 of the 6”. The measurements were just across the glass and did not include the trim rings and housings.

Scale diameters (at 21%) are 1-1/4” for the 6” and 1-5/8” for the 8”. The light you have is right in between.

P1 – Landing light on SRE NC 20961 (Note that the light is not parallel to the leading edge when extended)
P2 – Landing light on SRE NC 58785
P3 – Light extended (side view)
P4 – Light extended (front view)

skylarkmk1 - Thanks for the great pix of the Hamilton prop hubs. Yes I did check out soloprops and found that the proper prop would run around US$250.00 plus exchange and shipping and an extra blade in case of breakage to well over CDN$300.00 So I guess that idea will be scrapped. But I have a couple of old props lying around that were made by a friend of mine, none that I would actually run on a motor, but ones that I could chop up into a static display. This is probably the way I'll go! Your pix will be a big help. I notice in an old pix of Dario's ARE that he has the scale hub on his model. Wonder if it's real or for static display as well?

The shots of the Grimes lights are also welcomed. Good thing you indicated the canting outboard of these lights. It is just a little bit but would spread the light out. I am going with the Halogen but I may drop down to 10 Watts as the 20W bulbs are blinding!! They get quite hot when left on for a long time, but sitting out in the breeze when extended may keep them cool enough. They will also be on a micro switch that will shut the lamps off when not totally erxtended and I will have the servos on a variable switch on Aux Ch 2, so I can leave them slightly extended until cool. They will be mounted with metal so no fire danger. I am going to assume my Waco used the 8" dia. lamps and holding these up to the plans they do look good.

Stickbuilder - any chance of a photo or two of your mechanism? I know you're up to your *%$ with your move and workshop relocation, but just in case you get a minute!! Not to worry though - I understand - really!!

Jim,

If your batteries can handle it stay with the 20w lights. They may be blinding in the shop but do a test and see what they look like from 100' or more in full daylight. I bet they are not so bright. A sunset landing with all the lights on will look great. They should cool off pretty quick and I wouldn't think they would be on before turning for the final approach. Watch out for metal to metal contact and radio interference with your mounts. Good luck.

Finally got in touch with Jay (damifino) and he says that he can still hook us up with the silkscreen place that did the first run. They are going to need to make a white plate (whatever that is) to be able to print over darker colors. Maybe I'll have more information before the weekend. He also said that this outfit can do hats for us. I'm hoping for the shirts first, and then maybe we'll think about the hat thing. Mitch (nine o nine) also has an in to a company that might be able to fill the order as well.

Bill.

Instead of hats. patches may be the way to go as patches can be sawed on hats ( colors of our choice ) as well as jackets, shirts etc.
as well as shipping charges being less.

my question would be, Why not all 3? If pre orders were taken for each with an absolute deadline for orders, with a few extras for new brothers. I would be happy with any or all the above.

Well, she flies!  (The Cox/Pica 1/6 ARF).  And rather nicely, I might add.  I had to tone down the elevator and aileron throws a bit more than the instructions had me set them, but then I don't have exponential on my radio.  (It may be time to remedy that).  The RCV engine ran very well and had plenty of power. I think I might want less pitch on my prop, too; using a 14x6 to start off.  All in all a great maiden flight and 2 more.  I forgot to bring along my camera, though.

Mine exists only on a piece of paper, and in my head. I do have the hinge assembly, and the cans for the wing and the lamp (aluminum cigar tubes) and the reflector and lens assembly. I do have the lamp which is from a small LED flashlight and it's very bright, and cool as well. I'll have less than 20 bucks in mine once it's finished (I hope).

ps....The shop is coming along, but it's getting a new electrical service added. The building is near 80 years old, and never had any electrical power. The roof is new, from the joist plates up, and the doors are new as well. The floor is getting a cap poured to level the old concrete up, and then comes move in day. Can't wait.

OK thanks Bill. I think I've got a method figured out but it too is in my head. Always looking for ideas though!
I got a note back from Greg Miller at Waco Classic Aircraft about the paint colors for "The News" Waco ARE. He says :-
- PPG Paint - white 91049, gold 27818, green 44931
- Randolph - white Q-1916, gold B-9916, green Y 6350.
Unfortunately he didn't have that elusive Vermilion color number. Anyone got any ideas on that?

Further to my last note, Greg Miller updated his info with - The Vermilion Red is Randolph M-9530 or also called Waco Vermilion. There is no PPG number.

So now I have the colors, all I need is a Randolph paint chart with these chips on it so I can match the colors. I'll contact Randolph to see what they can do. YEEHa!

SuperCubman, Jim, how have you enjoyed working from DARIO,S plans on your WACO? Cheers, Bill Rogers

Hi Bill - Working from Dario's plans has been a pleasure. I told him that if I had the room on my living room wall I would hang them up as "Fine Art"!! Just about every question you might encounter in the build has an answer somewhere on them. However, one must realize that they were drawn almost a quarter century ago and that materials and electronics have evolved since then. On the Skybolt I subbed 1/4" and 1/8" lite-ply for many places that he used aircraft grade ply. I saved a terrific amount of weight that way. On the Waco ARE he used two 1/4" X 3/4" spruce /basswood spars for the top wing (similar but smaller on the bottom wing). I subbed these by making a lamination of three 3/32" balsa sheets with the center sheet grain at right angles. This gave a plywood-like structure out of which I split the 3/4" spars. I enlarged the rib slots 1/32" to accomodate the thicker spar. But now I have something that Dario didn't at that time. I glued strips of Carbon Fiber ribbon on the top and bottom of each spar making them at least as strong as a spruce or basswood spar but much lighter. Dario's basic construction is very sound and I vary from it only rarely and of necessity for different equipment or newer materials. I also have his plans for the Starduster Too which I am looking at for perhaps a future project.
So in summation, I love his plans and the results with the Skybolt prove their viability. He recommends a Quadra 50 (naturally - he was Mr. Quadra USA!) I shall use a Zenoah G-62 which I have on the shelf or maybe get another DLE55 which I have on the Skybolt and absolutely love, combined with a XOAR prop. Building now. Maidening in Spring 2010!!

Cheers
