Hello Brothers and others. I found this link on metal etching that some of us may find very handy for Instrument panels and other related metal parts. And in fact could be used for many things in our hobby. Just thought it might be useful to some of you and thought I would share. http://forums.dfoggknives.com/index.php?showtopic=17602

to all,
i'm looking to pick the color and markings for my bird, and think i found what i'm looking for on N15700 a 1935 ypf, one of two, that was custom built by waco for a miss connie e. johnston. can these markings and colors be used on my ymf if i'm building scale. does documentation have to be provided for both the construction and the paint/ markings, i can't find anything that spells it out. where would i look.

don't mean to be a bother.

Check the scalemasters site for a guide line it is in the PDF fliles on competition guide.  For scale contest the plane type UPF, YMF etc.  Needs to match the plane you are modeling otherwise you will recieve downgrades.  Even slight differences such as a UMF cowl on a YMF is caught and downgraded.  Best to pick one that matches the kit you are building from the start, and make everything as close as possible to the subject you are modeling.  Hope this helps here is the link to the scalemasters site.

To better understand what is required of you I invite you to review this documentation binder How-To. It explains and illustrates
the proper way to show documentaiton of both color markings, specific airframe features, and multiple view drawing presentation
for competition purposes.

The thing to remember is you are "replicating" a single full size airframe. Documentation which matches that of the features on a
single full size airframe can be merged with images of the full size you are replicating to show details and focus areas on the
airframe not typically available in a documentation resource...unless you have the 1:1 to photograph.

A typical Waco issue is most color photographic documentation is of the present day Classic Waco. It is best to determine the owner
of a specific airframe and acquire a photographic walkaround and obtain all the paint particulars...which is probably a Randolph color.

Enjoy, though its a Beech documentation example...well at least it is a bipe... :^)

The only way to be competitive is to build your model to match your documentation, not the other way around.

Bill is right. Trying to retro fit and reop a model to match documentation is a chore best left to those with little else to do.
Serious competitive flying scale modelers build from documentation from the beginning. Makes for an enjoyable experience
not matched by much in the modeling hobby...

Owners of 1:1 are typically more than happy to provide a photo walkaround of their pride and joys. Contributing $20 to
their maintenance bootie doesn't hurt one bit.

Do you have a decent multiple view drawing? I would expect at a minimum you should find one here...whether its UMF,
YMF, etc.

Oh Oh, I want to be a brother!! I have the Pica ARF(blue with yellow markings) powered by an OS 110 Alpha 4 stroke. My obsession has lead me to the GP new ARF. Hopefully I will be be collecting goodies to put one of those together soon, thinking about the OS 155 Alpha's for it. I have a few large gas 3D machines but prefer the glow 4 stroke for these scale birds.

Welcome to the brotherhood Jason & Ken and Sevans16. I’ll be looking forward in your build.

Robert,
Your Waco’s moving along quite nicely and looking great.

Ed,

Bomber field is a fantastic looking field. I would love to see a Waco fly in but don’t think I could make the trip. I’m vary lucky to be living within 30 min of Lakeland home of Top Gun, Fl Jet and Monster planes I get to see all these world class planes and meet some of the pilots. I also get to see Bill (stickbuilder) Mitch and his beautiful Waco and a few other Brothers that attend. Thinking about that I guess I’m a pretty lucky guy LOL.

Simply gather 100% of your documentation before you start. It is not time consuming today with all the online resources available.
If help is desired I can be of assistance.

flite metal,
ed, thanks for the offer, it seems all of a sudden i've fallen into a world of new of information, me thinks i cried wolf too soon. my plain was to build a yfm with documentation for the construction and detail end then provide documentation of a ypm for the color schem and trim. i did think about converting the yfm to a ypm, it looked simple but when i investigated it became complex. i now found a yfm that i'm woking on using just waiting for the owner to reply.
to answer your question ed, yes that info was of help and will be used to present my documentation at a later date.
right now i have a bowing or warpage situation to correct, it seems there must have been a lot of humidity here last week while i was away the leading edges and two ribs now have bows in them. oh well!!

thanks again

All parts now covered, stitched, taped, poly-brushed, glass and metal parts epoxy primered, ready to apply the poly-spray tomorrow, maybe colour on the weekend???

As I have said, I am not replicating any particular YMF, this model is for flying, not competing. I chose a colour scheme from Airliners.net for a UPF 7. Dark green fuse, cream wings and tail feathers, black trim outlined with a fine yellow stripe.

I've been working my bu** off to get this done in time for Monster Planes in Oct....5 months to this stage. almost burned out, but not quite. This is the most concentrated time I've ever put into a model. Can't wait to see it in the air and listen to that 400.

Cheers,
Dave.
