That looks pretty good, considering the options.  What did you use for the blue?

I went to a Festival of Flight in Suffolk, VA yesterday and took some photos of a brand new YMF-5  in a completely different scheme. Take a look.

This plane had so much paint on it you could barely see the tape on the ribs!

A few more photos................

Note the aux fuel tanks in the wing panels, and the clear non-slip on the wing walkway.

Looks really good Tmac, now just do it 13 more times[:D]

GOD, I want one!!! I swear if I won the lottery I'd buy one just to put in a room , so I could go in and sit and look mat it evey day... now that's the stuff dreams are made of. Thanks for the pic's Dash, that just made my whole day

Jaybird -> RE: WACO YMF (4/30/2012 2:19 AM)

Still too windy and gusty up my way to do any flying, so I started the break in process on my new Saito 125. It fired right up and ran well even at the rich setting suggested in the manual. I didn't run a full tank through as it ended up being pretty chilly in the shade out out back.

I did a quick balance check with all the parts assembled and it's still a tad tail heavy with the receiver battery next to the servos. I think I'll try the battery tray included that mounts off the firewall along with a 2100 mAh pack for the weight and duration.

Dash7ATP, the blue vinyl was a piece of old left over from another project ( a modeller mates )
WacoNut, It wont be too difficult, I will get a cutter to do the hard bit, that way all the bumps will be the same, and I can play with the actual shape to get it looking better.

Regards tmac.

Question for the Great Planes ARF flyers. What is the attitude of the airframe viewed from the the side when this plane is properly balanced at 5-1/4"? I've flown many planes of different types but it always frustrates me when ARF kits don't give any reference for what a"balanced" plane should look like. Plans built kits at least give you a datum line to go by so you can get a sense of the plane should present itself (tail high for some types like the SE5 and J-3 Cub).

Currently with the fuselage resting in a cradle it puts the lower wing at positve 2 degrees relative to the floor as a reference. If I pick it up at the recommended CG location the tail drops slightly so I know it's tail heavy which is why I plan to move the battery back up front. What I would like to know is should it come up level at the CG from that position or should the tail actually come up a little more?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Jaybird,
,
For whats its worth. I don't know what your instruction book tells you for set up. Barth kits and I beleive most of the Pica builders are using 0 degreese on the lower wing -2 on the top wing and +2degreese on the stabilizer. set the bird up on an even flat surface bring the tail up so there is a 0 degreese on the frame and go from there. if you go back far enough in this forum thid has been discussed in great detail. there are smarter people here then me, this is my plain of attack. good luck and happy flying.

acerc -> RE: WACO YMF (5/1/2012 1:43 AM)

Unless you have an adjustable stabilizer balance it to a level stabilizer.
I have an adjustable stab and it ended up at 3degs for a nice appearance in flight.

Jaybird -> RE: WACO YMF (5/1/2012 2:43 PM)

The instructions say...balance the model at 5-1/4" back from the leading edge...that's it. The tail is not adjustable and is set at 2-1/2 degree positive relative to the bottom wing and the top wing is minus 1 degree relative to the bottom wing. These numbers were measured with an incidence meter and are not listed in the manual. Looking at some of teh in-flight pictures, it looks llike in level flight it like to sit a little tail high so that's what I'll shoot for when balancing.

I'm just trying to make sure this first flight is as succesful as I can by asking those thta have this particular model what their experience has been.

Brothers anybody out there, I know you all can't be flying at the same time, no posts in over a week, or my computer has failed me!

Lins -> RE: WACO YMF (5/1/2012 5:00 PM)

I would say your computer failed you. There have been quite a few posts.

WacoNut -> RE: WACO YMF (5/1/2012 6:41 PM)

I have been flying my 1/3 Cub and 1/4 DRI. I am also getting all the equipment stripped out of my Pepino 25% WACO to get it ready to donate to the WACO Museum in Troy Ohio. My plan is to deliver it to the museum next week while I am on vacation.

My 33% WACO will be getting some new easier flying wires next week as well. The 1/2 hr setup and teardown time is just too much to make it practical to fly much. It will not look as scale but I will have the option of putting the metal flying wires back on when the mood strikes me. I am hoping the setup and teardown time is 15min or less. I will get more enjoyment out of the plane flying it more that setting up and tearing down.

Later!!
Anthony

WacoNut -> RE: WACO YMF (5/1/2012 10:09 PM)

I have the 25% Waco ready to deliver to the museum next week.

The engine, radio gear etc: has been removed from the plane. I made a shaft out of 3/4" dowel to mount the prop and spinner. The hinges and control rods have been glued solid. As it sits now the model is un-flyable and that is the way it is intended to stay. It will go on permenant display at the museum. I may regret never flying the plane later but I am also glad to see it going to the museum. This plane was a labor of love.
Here is a pic of the fuselage after finishing the modifications.

acerc -> RE: WACO YMF (5/1/2012 10:16 PM)

Very sad for your loss. But on the other hand you'll be a part of history. So, also envious.

Lins -> RE: WACO YMF (5/1/2012 10:17 PM)

I don't think anyone would give you a hard time for not flying it and donating it to a museum!

I really need to get my current projects done so I can get started on my 1/3 Genesis Waco.

WacoNut -> RE: WACO YMF (5/1/2012 10:20 PM)

Thanks Robert,
I guess it's better to be a Hangar Queen in a museum rather than one in my basement[;)] I am sure they will enjoy have it there. Maybe I can get another ride in a Waco out of it as well[:D].
Later!!
Anthony

pimmnz -> RE: WACO YMF (5/1/2012 10:22 PM)

Jaybird, you can't set the flight attitude by the balance.
Evan.

Jaybird -> RE: WACO YMF (5/1/2012 10:25 PM)

I understand that. I'm just trying veify that the position it's in when static balanced is similar to what others with this particular plane have. Apparently I'm over thinking this and I'll just give it my best shot and see what happens.

Jaybird

pimmnz -> RE: WACO YMF (5/1/2012 10:51 PM)

Seems best. I think you will find that, after lots of airplanes and experiments, 28% MAC is the best place for balance. That is, no matter which one of these things you have, balance 28% MAC back from the leading edge of the top wing. MAC is the horizontal distance from the leading edge of the top wing to the trailing edge of the bottom wing, in this case.
Evan, WB #12.

mogman -> RE: WACO YMF (5/2/2012 12:22 AM)

I balanced my 40% at 28-30% Flys great, slightly tail high.

Cheers,
Dave.

That 1/3 DVII looks a little sinister coming in on your six.

mogman -> RE: WACO YMF (5/2/2012 1:18 AM)

Yeah, he wasn't a very good shot...missed me. LOL

acerc -> RE: WACO YMF (5/2/2012 1:26 AM)

Dave was that photo taken at Top Gun? Look's real familiar.

mogman -> RE: WACO YMF (5/2/2012 2:38 AM)

No Robert,... Monster planes.
