Status: offline 		KHODGES- What paint scheme are you gonna do? Maybe I missed it earlier...

I cut the V-stab and rudder parts today, will glue them together tonight. Next is the crutch and formers. Thanks to STICKBUILDER's tracings I'm making this thing a reality. Next time I post some pictures I'm going to include some of my Master Airscrew balsa stripper. It's mounted to the table along with a guide fence that makes cutting strips almost too easy.

I got the top wing mounted and I got the interplane struts drilled and bolted on. After getting it all finished I levelled the fuse and pulled out the incidence meter. I would like to say all surfaces are dead on the money but I have to say all surfaces are within a very acceptable range, within a needle width away from 0

I've thought long and hard on this. I already have a yellow WACO, and the red is a bit too popular, although it is a very visible color. Blue is too somber, white gets dirty too easy, can't think of a shade of green that would look good unless I did it as a military trainer, and they weren't green anyway. I want something that is elegant, and that the trim will show up well on to help tell which direction it's pointed in .

The one on the left is the colors I'm going with, and the scheme I'll use is the one on the right. There aren't many I've found with the scalloped wings, and I like that:

Status: offline 		hughes, it's looking good! I really like your struts, good work. Something I've noticed on all these kits and ARF's, and maybe it's already been discussed, is the lack of a front cockpit. In the WACO nomenclature, the "M" denotes 2 and 3 passenger airframe, so there should be a second cockpit. I'm not sure on the originals, but the new Classic has a removable windscreen and tonneau cover for the front 'pit when it's not in use.

I also noticed your Saito radial. I assume it's the 170? No better powerplant for a WACO, a radial, and no better radial for a model than a Saito.

Status: offline 		I second what KHODGES says about the radial. Please say you are running on board glow. That engine drops the bottom left cylinder regularly.

In my mind I keep going back to cream over all with red orange in a scalloped scheme like yours. The one I've ridden in is cream over all and orange scallops with gold pinstriping outlining the orange. I have a book with an earlier WACO on floats that is sorta hunter green with a silver and cream striping scheme, and the floats are silver. Real classy. That's another option for me.

Status: offline 		Thanks, can't believe it's becoming a reality. I am going to be using a cover on my front cockpit just to simulate its there. I won't be cutting or anything. You nailed it, Saito 170 3 cylinder running on board glow and independant exhaust stacks.
Maiden flight is going to be shaky

I haven't looked at the plans concerning adding a front cockpit. I'd at least like to cut it in there even if it had to be very shallow.

Status: offline 		Would be very nice to complete two cockpits! I did look at the plans and considered doing it. I even have the pencil lines in my fuse from when I attempted to get the right shape before cutting. I couldn't get happy with my lines. Had I of obtained a descent line, I would have kept it shallow as well.

I now have the crutch built, and the bottom formers and landing gear assembled and in place. Looks like the adjustable stab should work just fine. There is no binding, and the linkage is slop-free. I'll post pics tonight. (camera batteries need charging again)

Referencing the QCF pictures from skylark on page 63, post #1571, can anyone tell me the function of the 'bent pipe' looking device on the bottom of the wing connected to the aileron in the last picture? It also shows up on a picture I have of the YMF. Judging from the curved slot at one end, that may be for adjusting trim, but is it the aileron actuator or what? My stupid foggy brain can't figure out how it works.

That is the aileron pushrod you see. It is connected with "ball links" for lack of the technical word. If you remove the plate on the wing, access to the "bellcrank" mechanism is under the plate. Instead of a straight slot we use when hiding a side mounted servo in the wing, they use a curved slot that follows the rotation of the bellcrank and at the same time induces differential to the ailerons. The pivot for the bellcrank is at the greese fitting. A couple of pictures from a UBF (Texaco 17) and a little different angle may help you visulize how it works. Texaco 17 was a racing WACO and has a steamling fairing over the linkage. I will try to get a photo with the plate removed next time I am up there.

Status: offline 		I cut out the front cockpit on my ARF, and made a windscreen for it. It put the windscreen for the rear cockpit to shame, so I made a new one for it, too. They're not quite complete, haven't finished the rear's frame or the brackets to mount the front yet. I found two different front windscreens on the YMF Classic, one has four panels and one has three. I made the three panel. Both are made of 1/16 inch Lexan (polycarbonate). The frame for the rear 'screen is 0.08 styrene strips (it doesn't have an outer frame, just where the panels hinge, because it's designed to fold up when removed), and that's what I'll use for the front frame.

Here's a pic or two, the old foot long "yardstick" is for the Master Chief's benefit, the dial caliper is for you more "high tech" types

Status: offline 		That's great! I don't know what the color codes refer to, or what the asterisks are for, but it looks like the color schemes matched to the registration and tail #'s. For anyone wanting to do a specific plane, you'd be all set. I only saw one that had a base color of cream, with maroon stripes and gold trim. Makes me more sure that's the one I want to do. I guess I'll use the registration # too.

Whom are you refering to as "high tech" LT?... What's so "low tech" about the "thumb to forefinger" measurement method? Or in my Doggie case, the "dewclaw to foreclaw" measurement method?

Status: offline 		Okay, here's the weekend's work as promised. The tailwheel is only a mock=up, and the final result will be scale-like in appearence, and will have the fairing (I promise). You should be able to see the tail loading tank box, and the removable part of the former (F-7B) that enables you to service the tank. The gear is not welded up yet, and lots of good stuff to come. The lightening of the formers made it possible to add the heavier parts without gaining any weight. In fact the fuselage parts with modifications are still lighter than the original parts.

I appreciate the explanation of the aileron push rod. Makes sense to me now. It's just that it looks so different for a push rod that I couldn't imagine that's what it was. Very odd shape. Anyway, thanks for clearing it up. Now I can sleep.

The saddest part of all this is that they are STILL building and selling this plane, and I AM alive (at least on weekends), but I could sell and mortgage everything I have or have had, and still couldn't afford one. A Plain Jane YMF Classic goes for about 450K with the 275hp Jake. I'll have about 1/500th of that in mine.
