On my 28% Extra I use the padded tuning fork that goes into the ground and cradles the stab on both sides if the fuse, works great for that size of Aircraft.

What do other Pilots use to restrain there 35%, 40% while starting? Wouldn't it have to be something pretty big?

thanks for any input , zz

ZZ,

I use the same thing you do. I have a couple of sizes I made. One for glow and one for gas. Mine fold down in one direction only so all I have to do is back the plane up far enough so that it lays down

The ones for gas are a bit wider and have a longer garden spike on them. My biggest is a 30 percent Yak

I can't remember the guys name but I believe he is in a club in Florida. He sent me a few photos of these cool safety devices. These pull vertically out of the ground for airplane release. They probably could be finished in a day with the right crew.

I prefer a person as a holder too. But if one is not available then I use a rope around the tail. My rope is thicker parachute type rope with a carabineer to help get it hooked around fence posts etc. I use a thicker softer type of rope rather then thinner harder twisted nylon type rope...

I use a big soft rope as already suggested or a person I trust. I make sure the rope is taught before swingin the prop. Wouldn't use a spike in the ground (for big planes) even if I could get spike in the ground - anyone who's tried to dig a hole in SoCal knows what I'm talking about!

If I can not find a willing person I use a Craftsman extra long honking screw driver Place it two feet in the ground at an angle and use a soft rope around the tail feathers. It will hold a 100cc plane at WOT, but I would never risk trying that in front of the plane. You never can be too safe.

I found the club that has the neat system for restraining large airplanes. It would be great/safer if all the RC clubs had these. Go to www.charlotterc.com and click useful info, then CRCS plane restraints.

I use a person. Not too hard to find a willing participant around our field. Not too many guys flying gas, and they are intrigued by it. Always somebody willing to stand over the tail.

I don't fly gassers alone--so if I go out and no one is around, I either wait for someone to show up or go home. Only live 6 miles from the field.

I've never been seriously hurt playing with planes. Got my fingers wrapped once while playing with the timing on a 50cc conversion engine. That was enough of a lesson to keep me from ever messing with one when I'm alone at the field.

I'm knocking on my wooden computer desk right now.....................

Well this is a question I'm very interested in since I've got to figure out a way to hang on to the model I'm just finishing with a 100 size twin in it while I get it set up...

On my 50 size gasser I use the tail feathers restraint method to start it, then stand with over it with a leg on each side of the fuselage in front of the stab for the warm up and quick power check.

As you get to the bigger sizes, some method of holding them by the wings needs to be employed as the larger gas engines are capable of doing damage to the tail feathers at high power settings. Holding them by the tail feathers should prevent it from getting away from you on an accidental power increase, but as my buddy can attest, just holding it by the tail feathers while setting up the carb on a ZDZ-80 WILL damage the tail feathers on a certain YAK...

Ifshnee,

I use the Midwest restraint also on my 28%, but I'm wondering if it will be able to handle a 35% with a DA-100 ? Maybe for starting, but not throttling up to max. I really like the padded PVC gates that are in a previous post. This uses the wings, provide concrete for the gas drips and looks like it would be easy on the airframe. Now, can I make one for our Field is the question?

thanks for all the insight ............

Well that's exactly what I use for starting models and have done it with everything but my first trainer. Some models like my Funtana 90 require the strap to go the other way because of the carbon fiber stab supports on the underside of the horizontal stab, or other models that the strap will hit the servos/linkages for the tailfeathers. It's also how my buddy had his Yak held when he damaged the tailfeathers setting up the ZDZ. It works great for starting since I don't think an inadvertent throttle up
