Hi Robert,

Do you have any updates on the Power Expander II as far as availibility and features?

Are you still planning to prvide it with longer receiver leads and dual battery inputs?

Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Jeff,
The PowerExpander family is expanding. First we will release the PowerExpander14MZ and then the PowerExpanderPro (formerly the II). These both have similar features, dual-battery inputs, "Smart-Sense" inputs that tell you when you are actually drawing power from each battery and an optional failsafe switch when using batteries directly instead of a regulator input. The PowerExpander14MZ will have 12 channels with 2 outputs per channel. The PowerExpanderPro will have 10 channels with 8 of those channels having 3 outputs and 2 having 4 outputs (rudder channels). The PowerExpanderPro will be a universal unit, it will work with either JR or Futaba. It will have longer leads for top-loading receivers. Price of the PowerExpanderPro will be a bit higher than the old PowerExpander. We will also be introducing two other models, a Sport and a Plus. The PowerExpanderSport will have 8 channels with two outputs per channel and will accomodate top-loading receivers. It will also be slightly smaller and lighter. We see this version going in 33% planes and 40% planes with dual receivers. This will be a bit cheaper than the old PowerExpander. Finally, later this summer, we will introduce the PowerExpanderPlus which will have 8 channels, 6 of which will have a single output and 2 will have 2 outputs. It will have dual battery inputs with standard R/C connectors. It will also have built in failsafe switch and Ignition Cutoff. It will be the same size as the PowerExpanderSport. We see this unit going into 50cc-80cc size planes.

Thanks Robert,

So it looks like the current Power Expander will be discontinued. Is that right?

For planes that have a lot of control surfaces for example, an F-18 that has 2 elevators, 2 rudders, 2 flaps and 2 ailerons and where we want to use a seperate servo for nose wheel steering, the best fit would be the Pro model since it allows for more than 2 servos controled through the Rudder channel. The Sport version would work if I mixed the nose servo to another channel.

Does the Sport have dual-battery inputs as well and are the servo outputs buffered/amplified?

Jeff

Hi Jeff,
The Sport does have dual battery inputs but with no protection like the Pro and 14MZ versions have. It is pretty much like the current PowerExpander but slightly smaller and a little less capability.

When using these with dual receivers - can you connect jumpers so that if one battery pack fails, the other can carry the load of both receivers?

Hi,
Well you could but I do not recommend it. If you really want redundancy you want two completely independent systems, no electrical connection. Also, jumpering two receiver's electrical can cause range loss because you get LO bleed between the receivers over the electrical connection.

Robert,

When you say 'less protection' are you referring to the battery input system?

Also, will the Sport version have buffered or amplified outputs to the servos?

The reason I ask is that I intend to use a Power Expander with Hitec Digital servos and a futaba PCM receiver. In the past, there have been some issues with an unbuffered output to Hitec servos when connecting two servos to a single channel. For example, on a Y connector. Hitec has fixed the problem with their current release but some of my older servos may have the problem so I need this buffered output.

Regards,
Jeff

Hi Jeff,
The PowerExpander 14MZ and Pro will have battery protection built in. I.e. if a battery goes bad or shorts it will be taken off line. The Sport is just like the current PowerExpander, the two inputs are just shorted together internally. All the PowerExpanders have buffered (amplified) servo outputs. All the servos will be buffered unlike the old PowerExpander where only 6 channels of the 9 were buffered.
Let me know if you have more questions.

Hi JLB,
We hope to have the PowerExpander 14MZ out by the end of April. Then we will try and get the PowerExpander Pro out by the end of May. The PowerExpander Sport will probably follow next and the PowerExpander Plus will be the last out sometime mid summer.

Hi Bob,

I've been kind of monitoring the website and this forum for any news on this and since it's not on the website, and I believer further down this thread you indicated some PC board supplier problems, I'm wondering if this is going to be available soon? Also, did you opt for making the failsafe switch standard or optional as I'm not sure I want that?

I just ordered a 50cc size bunny from Tom and he said it'll be 3 to 4 weeks so I've still got some time, but I'm trying to get all the other stuff lined up...

Thanks!

Hi Zeeb,
We have the PowerExpander Pro, 14mz and Sport out now. We are trying to get the Eq10 (w/Equalizers) out as soon as we can. We are out of the Sport right now, which is what I think you want for this plane, but should have more in about 2 weeks. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Bob,

Thanks for the quick reply, but what I'd really like is the one with the BatShare and ignition cutoff built into one unit as it would be so much cleaner and lighter for that size plane. Is that what you're referring to by "Eq10"? Or are you still in development on the PowerExpanderPlus?

I think I'm convinced redundant is the way to go even on this size model after finding a switch going bad on my current 50cc size model. Fortunately I caught it before it failed...
