Status: offline 		To get a good blast of that castor scent go to the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in Rhinebeck, N.Y. on Saturdays and Sundays during the summer. WWI heaven!!!!!!!!!!

They have an R/C weekend in September too where all the r/c planes have to be from that period. Worth the trip.

Status: offline 		Love the smell of Castor back from young days - 1953 or 54 and my McCoy 29. As I grew older like the smell of burnt diesel on the construction site and late the smell of burnt JP-4 out of jet. Still like that smell. The smell of freedom!

shape if the topic drifts, and posts were getting deleted, and editted.

Anyhoozle...the smell of castor is one of the things that is addictive about
the nitro engines. Did you ever smell Cool Power synthetic oil fuel ? Man,
that stuff stinks.

I definitely have to agree with you about the smell of coolpower and that was one of the things that was in the back of my mind when I posted the first post of this thread.

Status: offline 		I hear ya'....I wouldn't put Cool Power in one of my engines If they gave
me the fuel.

I've been using some extra castor to bring the oil content up to 20% for
some of my engines, including the four strokes, new engines, and nickel
liner OS engines.

Status: offline 		I bought a gallon of the 30% heli fuel a couple months ago to test in some Saito and other 4 strokes. The first thing I noticed was the smell...
I guess it has a high oil content already, but I put 4 oz. of castor in it just to make myself feel better...and for the smell
I think that would bring the total oil content up to somewhere around 25% perhaps? 25% oil, w/ (not quite ) 30% nitro...

Does Fox still make "Missile Mist"? I used to use that in my Cox engines...I remember it was purple...and that it would make a K&B .40 w/ a 9X7 "power prop" really go...as a 16 yr. old kid, I couldn't really afford that much of it then. (1976 )


Anyone else remember "Ucon" oil?
Mid 70's our club used to get our fuel in bulk (55 gal. drums ) from a local industrial chemical supplier. One year, unbeknownst to us, they substituted Ucon for castor...

Status: offline 		You're right Dave. We used to call Cool power the green death when I worked as an engine repair tech. You could always tell an engine that was run on it. Rusty bearings and green residue inside. I run all my engines (glow) on 100% castor oil and 20% oil.

Status: offline 		Ucon was one of the first synthetic oils to be used in model engine fuel. The start of the rusty bearing syndrome. That and cooked engines from lean runs. Synthetics burn off long before castor does. An oily engine from castor seems preferrable to a clean engine cooked with rusty bearings from synthetic. At least to me.

Status: offline 		It was (is?) made by Union Carbide and was one of their early synthetic oils...
That was my first experience with the differences between Castor and synthetic oil when used in a glow engine.
Besides several guys frying their engines, it didn't have the smell, and that was the tip off...
My "mentor" who was a Navy pilot in WWII and long time modeler said "this fuel don't smell right" and called the fuel manuf. etc. etc. and unpleasantness ensued...

Aaannnyyywayyy...guess that story would go in your great Castor debate thread tho, huh Dave?
