EICAS -> SR71 /WREN 44 Build thread (3/25/2006 3:46 AM)

I received the first SR71 turbine version a couple of days and I thought I would share how quickly it comes together.

The plane is ARF, comes in white gel coat or Blackbird black. I chose the Black of course.

Specs:

Length: 57.08 inches
Wing span: 29.52 inches
Power: I chose the WREN 44 however you can also power it with Hacker B40-13S, Master B40-O-Flight controllers, Schuebeler DS-30-DIA 3-ph and 8x LiPos 2700 HDHE (2x 4S)

The plane comes together quick. In two evenings the retract plates, servo and engine mounts are in. Actually waiting for the Hysol to dry is the longest part.

Will keep you posted as I progress.

Thanks guys.
In the mean time, the Hysol is now dry, I took some pictures right side up.

Waiting for the Hitec 5125s servos to arrive and will get the Elevons installed.

EICAS -> RE: SR71 /WREN 44 Build thread (4/5/2006 4:24 AM)

Just finished the Turbine and Servo installations. Modified the air intake to be from the top for less risk of any debris being ingested since the plane is low on the ground.
Heading to Toledo and will have the SR71 on display at the booth. Still waiting for the retracts to arrive.
Added servo in the rudder as well.

The WREN44 sits so neatly in there.

That is HOT! I will be looking for it at Toledo

Thanks for sharing, I can't wait to hear how it flies.

Eicas,
Any updates for us on this neat little plane. I love the SR71 and I have been waiting forever for a HOTSPOT sized one to come available. I currently don't own a turbin jet, but I have a squint scale SR71 that I built from house insulation foam. It has a Tower Hobbies .75 configured as a pusher. Flies s ok. I would love to hear how your plane flies if you have flown it yet. Thanks. Squint scale = squint your eyes........the more you do, the better it looks!

Sorry have not updated for a while. Been busy and doing some traveling.
Should be another couple of weeks for the test flight.
Here are some updated pictures.
You can see a preliminary video of the EDF version at:

EICAS -> RE: SR71 /WREN 44 Build thread (6/7/2006 3:37 AM)

Working to try and finish by the weekend. Air system, retracts and brakes complete.
Next Receiver and batteries and the then the turbine will go back in.

EICAS -> RE: SR71 /WREN 44 Build thread (6/26/2006 1:43 AM)

All ready. Did some ground testing today.
No more excuses, test flight next.
At 4.4Kg (9.7lbs) wet, and a WREN44 Gold in the tail, I think this is going to be a rocket.

Here is a video clip of the EDF verion for now.

Finally managed to convert the video.
Here is a short clip of the SR71 on its own power for the first time.

mugenkidd -> RE: SR71 /WREN 44 Build thread (5/22/2007 1:27 AM)

What ever happen with this plane? Did it ever succesfully fly??

dbarrym -> RE: SR71 /WREN 44 Build thread (2/7/2008 8:14 PM)

Also curious to hear if this ever flew...the video on the Altecare web site only shows turbine ground run....the flight video is of the bungee launched EDF.

Well?

EICAS -> RE: SR71 /WREN 44 Build thread (3/22/2008 4:38 AM)

The SR71 was orginally designed for twin 70mm EDF. Turbine conversion proved to be too heavy. It has since been re-converted back to dual EDF.

andrewjet -> RE: SR71 /WREN 44 Build thread (4/27/2008 2:49 AM)

This is nice but since it's not the turbine one then it should be posted as the edf later version so that people expecting the down-load to be the electric instead of looking for the turbine one! I think the turbine version must have crashed!!!
