Air is leaking from your left retract, somewhere on the down line, you possibly have the down line T'd off to each leg at some point, if you can put a clamp on the left leg down line and operate the retracts again, if you don't loose any air then the leak is upstream towards the retract unit from that point, then its just a process of elimination, keep moving the clamp until you find the point where is still leaks and the leak is between that point and from where you first put the clamp on the line.

Hope that helps
Mike

BaldEagel,

Thanks for your reply. I pulled out the left leg and found that air tube was kinked and there was a slight cut atthe tip of the nipple.
Have changed this part of tube, installed a 3mm coupler and grided enough from the bearers to avoid this problem.

I thought i had uncovered the problem, I filled the air tank and.... i still had same problem except that retract was operating normally same as the others. The air tank goes empty in less than 15 minutes when gear is down!!!

In this setup, I only have 2 X-type Festo connectors where all the air tubes coming from retract units go in. Than i have 1 Y Festo connector for the Festo air fill valve, air gauge and input valve pressure line.

Seeing that I still had the leak problem, I did the "listen to whistle test" using a tygon tube directed to every apparent connection from one side.
Nothing could be heard and yet in less than a few minutes air tank would go empty when gear is down.

I will try to do some tests as per your suggestion, but still have a question, Could it be that one of the cylinders is leaking? would it leak in one position and not the other?
Understand that you can inject some silicone oil inside Air system or cylinders?? What grade/type of silicone oil should be used?? Thin or thick?

Appreciate your help in this respect.

Best regards,

mix up some soapy water and use a brush to apply it to all your fittings and cylinders, you'll find the leak.

Hi Guys
Just I quick precautionary upgrade you may want to carry out !
On the tail I would recommend pinning the threaded inserts that fix the tailplane onto the booms !
I have just hysoled a bit of piano wire into the brass insert! so that it can not rotate and come loose inflight !

Yes the Boomerang is a good airplane. I have over 350 flights on mine. You did a good job getting it on the ground in the cross wind. As a suggestion it appeared to me you don't have any or very little expo in your elevator. It will help a great deal on your landings. I would suggest at least 50% to start. The plane is quite aerobatic but you want your manuvers to be smooth. The expo will assist you.

Last night installed a more detailed cockpit instead of the "toyish" tub that comes with the kit. Many thanks to Marytyn Little from ACEJETS for his help and time in finding a suitable sized example to use.

WOW the winglets are NEAT!
I tried this approach with mine... BVM bandit underwing tanks
modified as tip tanks. I'm guessing the winglets are more efficient !

I like the winglets, very nice.    over the past few months I have been going over my Boomer XL with a fine tooth comb.  I pulled all the covering off and found cracks all over the wood. even found one last night as I was covering the wings, the flap was splitting along the trailing edge.  so I did glass the center section of the wing, repaired some stress cracks in the fuse, even made those nose cone non-removable,  painted it giving it a new look, this will be one of a kind.

all I am waiting for is my neon yellow covering , as we all know the Thunderbird scheme is hard to see with a white over cast sky. it will be seen now.  Sent my gear back to Dream works for repair and should be ready in about a month.  this will be the fourth season coming up for the XL so it was time for a complete overhaul, still, I could not believe the amount of cracks throughout the bird.

Ian Rowe, how did you make the winglets and how are they mounted?

Mark

Hi mark
I cut out the shape that I wanted out of 3mm light ply then sandwiched it between 2sheets of 3mm balsa sheeting,
Then I covered the wing tip with cling film and cut 7 strips of glass cloth about 100 x120 ( 4x5 ) and formed them them around
The tips with resin , Once dried i tacked the winglet to the moulded tip then cut more strips and glassed from the tip up the wingers
Once dried I drilled and taped the bottom lip 3mm to allow a 3mm bolt from the top downwards then glassed the lot.

Regards to the earlier question they seem to help it take off I bit quicker but really only made them for the looks but only flown it
Twice so will see how it goes, off to Florida jets this week so will let you know the results later.

I think the theory is that the winglets reduce tip vorticies and therefore increase the amount of lift available from the wing, almost like increasing the wing span, so a quicker take off sounds feasable.

had a little free time over the winter, so I took the Boomer XL apart. I went over everything. Found alot of weak spots that could have been a major problem this coming year. such as all the control surfaces seperating. such as the flaps, ailerons and elevators.  there were a few soft spots in the balsa sheeting that needed attention, then glassed the center section of the wing.  we all know at times how hard it is to see the Boomer xl with a grayish white colored sky, so these new colors with help.... just waiting for the gear to come back from being upgraded and the same with the ECU from jetcat.  101 flights on it last year, shooting for 75 this year........

i just love the winglets on your XL, it gives this jet a unique appearance. I am seriously considering this mod. on my new ready to fly XL which happened to have the same scheme as yours.
Would it be a problem for you to take a couple of close up photo of installation?

Thanks in advance,

Best regards,

Been right through the thread but not seen many control deflections mentioned

flap 80deg? or will it go more? how much down elevator seems to be needed at full travel?
found crow quoted at 25deg yes ok ?

Have one to setup tomorrow but dont have a manual for recomended, would just like to get a ball park setup

As for the flaps, mine are almost straight down. I used a load meter to check the servos.  When I deployed the flaps during set up, when the amps draw started to climb, I backed off on the flaps alittle. And with that I don't need a Crow set up.

As for the throws. I set it up using dual rates, no expo. and I always fly it at hi rates. When building mine I set all control surfaces neutral. For balance I have a few degrees nose down. So at full power or at low , no need for elevator deflections.

hope this helps

Mark
