I am getting consensus on what people are using to cover their warbirds. I am NOT asking what you think is the best so please just post what you used or are using. No need for the whats the best argument.

So far I've covered warbirds in Monocote, Oracover, Ultracoat, Sigcoat, silkspan, polyester coat lining and that one that's made of micro-fibres (brain dead on less than two cups of java). Oh yes, I've also used some Nelson lite film (ugh!). I'm about to try some solartex on a WWI bird.

Each one has advantages and disadvantages. My choice depends on how scale I'm trying for and what I have had the best luck with (and sometimes what's on sale or on hand).

If it is a knock around sport scale, I use Ultracote. If it a nice looking "scale" bird, I use fiberglass & paint.

Fiberglass and resin, fiberglass and Polyurethane. I prefer the Z-Poxy resin myself.

My first fiberglassing job was with Dan Parson's .58oz glass cloth, and EnviroTex epoxy. It turned out fine, but now Dan does not sell the cloth any longer. So I just ordered some from another source. The cloth is light weight, adds strength, and takes primer, detailing, and paint well. Also repairs are pretty easy.

I covered my TF Spitfire using .5 oz glass and West Systems epoxy. I used a high build primer from Duplicolor for filling the weave and adding panel lines with primer and have not selected the paint.

I always use Super coverite and paint works great and is strong. not as strong as Glass but easier for me
also less muss and fuss.

Ive used about all the heat shrinks, But Id have to say I prefer the low temp material for fitting tight spots, corners, and angles. I try to use original color schemes and that means alot of overlays etc. And this type material works best for me.

Only build one warbird, most people were saying - use glass cloth and Z-Poxy, so I did, and I found it much easier to handle than folks were saying too Most importand part of the process is not necessarily what you cover it with, but surface preparation before you cover!

I'm glad to see fiberglass and resin is a popular choice. This will be easy for me since I built fiberglass molds for a concrete precast company for 9 years. I see a lot of people coating the balsa with something before glass but it seems to me it would be best to let the resin saturate the wood. When you do that you have resin soaked into the wood fiber and pours, which means a better bond between the wood and glass. It also hardens the balsa. I know from experience that epoxy has an extreme amount of strength on its own besides the glass reinforcement and polyester resin has very little strength without glass.

The only thing I am concerned about is fiberglass has a tendency to "print through" after a while. Which means the glass weave will show through as time goes on. Anyone seen this on there planes?

I think that depends on the epoxy, some are stronger others may only be equal to polyester, I used vinylester once to build a white water canoe and it was strong. From my reading and research (limited) epoxy specificaly designed for the application of lamination is best and gets better strength to weight with vacuum bagging and heat cured. For finihing my planes I want an easy to mix, apply and sand resin hard enough that can take some hanger rash. I like Z poxy a lot but usually just use finish resin from the LHS. I prefer .75 to 1 ounce cloth because its much easier to keep wrinkles out. I do squeege excess resin off. Helps to keep weight down.
