Well today was the last day for my Telemaster. I'm a bit beside myself right now from the loss of a bird that me and my son put so much work into.

It was a normal day at my !QUOT!field!QUOT! with about a 5mph wind. The first flight was great. During the second flight I was having fun doing loops and stall turns. I was running at about half throttle and rolled the bird to the left nice and slow. I lost a bit of altitude during the roll so I pulled back on the elevator and I heard it. A loud snap and the left wing half departed from the plane. I was about 100' up and was helpless watching my hard work auger itself into the ground. My son (6) started crying and honestly I wanted to shed a tear but I was in a bit of shock. My first concern was to get to the crash and unplug the lipo and get it away from the crash. Initial inspection showed that the lipo pack was ruined as you can see in the pictures. When I got home I checked the servos and all are working fine as is the AXI and ESC. The motor does sound a bit different so I think I will send it back for repair. Overall it was an expensive and depressing day for me. Posting here begins the healing and I will rebuild it better and stronger with a two piece wing this time just for the spite of it.

There's no sicker feeling of total helplessness, than watching wings go one way, and the fuse augering all by itself. BEEN THERE, DONE THAT!!!! I'm glad you're considering rebuilding.........I just hope that somewhere in the deepest part of your son's sub-consious, he dosent equate Airplane+ Daddy= Failure! Have him help you re-build.it will be great for both of you!!!

Dr Phil told me to say this...........

Bummer,....I know how ya feel. My wing folded up on my Telemaster too. First part of the video is the maiden flight,...had a Saito .72 (you hear the 4 stroke)in it then. Next you see from the planes view, with a .61 Tower 2 stroke in it,as I had an onboard camera in the plane when the wing snapped. Also you hear the siren as it goes down. And last part of video is the aftermath of the crash. I think RC MANIAC119 has a great idea , you and your son rebuild it together

Did the camera live? That crash looks exactly the same as mine. I'm not giving up on this plane. I love flying it and building was really fun and relaxing also. I'm going with a two piece wing this time but I have to figure out how to do that. I think a carbon tube 6' long would make a really strong main spar. I'm luckly I didn't have my 300 digital camera on board this time. This thing hit so hard that the parachute man in the bomb bay had an arm snap right off. The only part of the whole thing is that my lipo pack is dead and that is a huge expence. I'm looking at well over 300 bucks and my time to get it flying again. I guess it could be worse but not by much.

Yes,...after a little soldering, the camera lived, and after some time in the vise and a little hammering and straightening, and a little epoxy, the siren lives on too. The engine survived too,...its now in a Seagull Extra 300 which flew for the first time last week and today. If I were to build another Telemaster, I'd definately beef up the wing too.

Are those Senior Telemasters? They look big enough in the pictures. I have a Senior and the wings are two piece and uses functional struts, which I feel are an absolute necessity with those huge wings. I have an ASP 1.08 on mine it pulls some very high g's at times. It's normally 12 pounds, but I have had it up to 20 pounds with giant floats and video equipment. Without the struts I know I could have kissed mine goodbye too.

CrashPro, what an amazing video. I guess that's a small consolation, but it's really something to watch. Do you mind if I upload that to our Club website "Other Cool Videos" section?

Mine was a Senior Telemaster ArCee....it was a kit tho.......one piece wing.....it looked like it snapped in exactly the same place as MikeFreas' wing did... go ahead and do with the video as you wish....if you're just posting the link to the video tho, it wont be there long,...as I don't have a lot of web space to work with and will be removing it when I need the space

Mike, I'm real sorry to hear about the wing failure. I was looking forward to seeing movies of the bomb dropping.

I have a son, much older than yours, and many things similar to your joint building project have happened to us over the years. We felt really bad at all of the unexpected failures, but, they did nothing but to strengthen our relationship, instead of hurting it.

When he got older we built RC helicopters together, some crashed, then we souped up and swapped engines in his first trucks, some engines didn't make it, then we got into dirt bikes, then we hopped up jet boats for the river, now it's building a sand rail for Glamus. In all those projects, there were tears expended by both of us, there were angry fights, however the one thing that survived it all is the friendship of father and son. It's OK to shed a tear, kids need to see that their parents are human.

Mike:

I know where you can get a free Senior Telemaster ARF kit, in the box, all you have to do is drive to Orange, CA. from San Diego and pick it up. Screw the kits from scratch, takes too long, and too frustrating, did that, been there, not again.

No. The kit version does not have struts. I think my mistake was using heavy ply as the wing joiner. I'm not sure how I'm going to do it next time because I really want a two piece wing that bolts on. I don't want any dihedral either. The ARF version would need allot of modification to make it how I want it so I'm going back to a kit.
