Greetings,
I am trying to help a friend/customer who has a huge B36 model determine a value for the plane as he has taken ill and would like to sell it before he passes away.
The plane was built in the early 1950's by a person called Pappus (sp?) and is really a very nice job. The plane is constructed of balsa wood and spruce, houses 6 converted single cylinder drone piston engines from the 50's and 4 ramjet engines in the pods (2 each side).
The landing gear retract, bomb bays work, flight controls work ect ect.
The plane is awesome to look at but I think the thought of flying her has since past due to the age of the glue and such. Wing span is about 28 feet wide, and the fuse is about 16-18 inches in diameter +/-

It is a broad range question but I know you guys have lots of experience to help someone out. I can send pictures, but not sure how to post em here.
Any input or help is sure appreciated.

Thanks!

trying to guess what something like that will bring (moneywise) is just that - a GUESS. My other hobby is restoring and collecting old Mustang cars and even that market is very volatile at the moment with selling prices flucuating wildly. The only TRUE way to find out is to have you or your friend contact someone that is well versed in Ebay and put it in an open auction there. Even here at RCU Marketplace the audience is very, very limited. If your friend is in need of the money, then the best way to maximize return is to auction it off. I am sure the powerplants alone on that model are very collectible and worth money. The B-36 is an unusual, but highly admired plane from the early cold war days, so I am sure you would see some very intense bidding on it......

good luck
randy

Thanks Randy, I think you are very correct about pricing, sort of what ever someone is willing to pay at that moment type of thing.
We are considering EBay, Just have to figure how to market it. Also a huge proplem is that it will need to be shipped almost for sure and boxing this sucker up is going to take some time!

I just measured the wings, they are 12 feet 5 inches each, plus the fuse so they are more like 25-26 feet, not 28 like I thought. Fuse is just under 17 inches diameter.

This is sort of a rich boy's toy more than anything. It looks awesome hanging there but you need a large place to hang and display it.

I can't be sure if the piston engines have been ran but the ramjet's have not been ran for sure. I think he also has 4 spare ramjets but I have never seen the spares. I did see the spare piston engines so I know they exsist.
Thanks for any help.

Windecker,
I agree, it's worth whatever the open market will bring. However, I have another idea, (tax deductable) if money is not an issue. How about donating the aircraft to the USAF Wright Patterson Museum in Dayton, Ohio, or a local wing of the Commerorative Air Force? There is a real B-36 at Wright Patterson. Your friend could have his photo and possibly a plaque kept with the aircraft and always be remembered by many who have a love for this aircraft and aviation in general. Just a thought.

The donation thing was more or less what we were going to do but since his health went so fast the family has decided "for" him that they would rather have the cash than the write off.

The are still considering it though depending on values I guess. If Donated, the value is even more important to have documented.

Muncie would be another great place to take it. It needs to be somewhere where people can enjoy it. Maybe the PIMA facility in Tucson, I know they just got a B36 from Texas they are putting together.
Thanks, I appreciate the help.

What if anything happened to this model? If still hanging somewhere I recommend it be reviewed by someone for consideration to
be an addition to the AMA museum in Muncie, though there is no confirmation it ever flew. Many B-36 projects have been started,
finished, yet never flown due to weight and an inability to be transported to a proper location for flight. In this case it would have
been a private or small full size airport.

One in DFW Metro has taken the better part of 15 years. This older model is I believe larger than one designed and constructed in
North Carolina. It benefits from its builders CAD skill set enabling weight savings with exceptional fit and finish of components.

If it is hanging somewhere, take digital images and post them for everyone to appreciate.

There was a popular kit by Eureka for the B36 that came from Japan.  It was control line, but a guy made two of tehm RC and brought them to the NAtionals about 1975 and they stole the show, he flew two of them with advanced aerobatics and stuff, it was incredible.  Four channels only, six .15 engines, about 12 foot wingspan.

Ed,
I bought this B-36 in 2009...I did a partial restoration on it and sold to to a guy in Cleveland, Oh. It is a phenominal airplane. HUGE ! I originally intended to restore it and take it to air shows for a static display, but I ran out of funding.(self funding)
I have photos if anyone is interested.  jhvyfreighter10@aol.com

H Windecker,

You would want to contact Carl Bachhuber, i think he is on here as "Carlb", he has built a 19'ws B36B powered by 6x G38s and flies it at different RC event across US and Canada. I'm sure he is ur best person to establish a value of the bigger bomber u have and trying to sell it for this family. With Carl you never know, he may even buy it as he loves and builds HUGE rc model aircrafts. Another Fellow named "DAG" is on Rcgroups who is presently building 257" ws model of B36D and will have EDFs on his jetpods.. I'm sure if you do some web search you will find these guys and there creations. I'm not sure who else can help you more then these guys could.

Here is Carl's Website: http://www.carlb-rcplanes.com/

When you talk to Carl, tell him Sam with 1/14th scale S Connie referred you to him. Best of luck.

If you could post few pictures of this HUGE B36 on here, that would be just great....
