Im looking to pick up a charger and was wondering what the pros and cons of these two chargers might be.
any opinions on either would be greatly appreciated.

I have the Triton. I had the Hobbico MKII. It burned up a few batteries. NIMH and LIPO! I just did not trust it. I got the Triton and I love it. The only thing I wish was it could charge 2 at a time. I would like to try the new Hobbico Charger. I can't remember the name but I still want to try it. I for one love the Triton. It was kinda pricy but It is worth it. I have done some tests on already charged batteries and so far so good. It is a great charger..

I cannot comment on the Triton, but I have an ICE and I can tell you that I love it.

I mainly use the ICE to charge 4-cell packs that compete with 6 cell packs in a 1/10th scale 4WD Modified buggy class at the local track. My 4-cells do well against 6-cell cars, you gotta see, I attribute the extra power to the ICE charger and Tekin battery equalizer.

The ICE can graph the charging progress of the battery which is a cool feature that you can visually see. It seems to do a better charge because you can adjust so many settings, such as peak sensitivity, charge, discharge up to 10A, 4-step charge, reflex charge, pulse charge. There is really so much stuff to do.

Refer to my "Calling all 4-step experts" thread. That has to do with charging batteries using the 4-step method, which is really sweet hehe. I just charged a 4-cell IB 3800mah battery to 4500mah without getting a peak, next time I am going to set step 4 to 4800mah and see how far it can get me, and the batteries were unbelievably cool. I really do like the ICE.

Also, I have problems charging equalized packs using my Intellipeak charger which itself is a nice charger. The ICE seems to do it with no problem, as it has better programming to avoid false peaks during the unstable first few minutes of charging.

Their are many threads on this discussion.

Triton can charge higher voltage on output than 12 V on input.

ICE has a graphing screen and better screen overall.

So close a call it 's a coin toss.

I love my ICE Rich

I habe both, basically it comes down to whether you want more current or voltage capacity.

This is all new to me Ive been into rc for almost 10 years mainly 1/10 scale on and off road nitro cars. Previously I just used the wall wart type charges for my radio, receiver battery and glow igniter battery and a battery tender that I hook up to my 12v lead acid starter box battery. I just purchased a blade cp micro heli and the wall wart charger takes like 2 hours to charge wich is too long. Im going to pick up a second battery so I can swap while charging. In the future I might get into some 1/18th electric so I figure I might as well get a decent charger that I can grow with. There seems to be alot involved with charging a battery besides plugging it in. I think I understand the charge current you take the power of the battery and divide by 1000 to get the charge current amps eg. a 650 mAh pack should be charged @ .65 amps?
battery capacity is the mAh of the battery. What happens though if it is not on the battery pack how would you tell?
not sure what the peak sensitivity is nor am I sure of the trickle current. Is there an auto setting on either of these chargers that can detect the type of battery the mAh charge current ETC.

you got it, the charge rate (current) for fast chargeing (li-po) is .65 amps. A max rate may be 1- 1.2 amps for a nickle type battery. It is possible to discharge an unknown battery with the triton and ice to get an idea of the capacity. Both have auto settings. If you are not going to do li-po batts a good charger to start is the digital piranha. welcome to rcu,,,,

thanks for the welcome U-dud I'm probably not going to do lipo batteries right away but going down the line I will probably upgrade the NiMh pack to a lipo pack. is the charge rate differnt for NiMh packs ?? The pack I have in my RC10GT has absolutely no markings on it at all so Would I just charge it over night then connect it to either charger and let it discharche and it will give me the amount it took out? will it also tell me what type of battery it is nickel cadium or NiMh ( i think its a NiMh not positive though) and what is peak sesitivity and trickle current?

trickle current is a very low charge applied after the fast charge terminates to keep the batt full or to "finish" it just in case all the cells were not exactly equal. It allows all the cells to get full while safely overchargeing the already full ones.

During a charge the battery continually rises until it's full. It then starts droppiong voltage. This amount of voltage drop is the peak sensativity and is about 5 millivolts for a nimh cell and 10 mv for a nicad. It is how the peak charger knows when the pack is full.

On your unknown battery , it would be good to put either charger on "cycle" mode (taking a wild guess at the specs at first) and the charger will charge and discharge repeatedly allowing one to view the capacity afterwords of each charge and discharge cycle

Normal charge rate for nickle batts are usually 1C (1500 capacity = 1.5 amps) and take an hour, but can vary from c/10 to 3C depending on the cell and application.

I ended up picking the ice. I'll post back on how I like it after I use it a bit. So far my only complaint is the time only shows in seconds instead of showing minutes and they should have added a backlight to the display.

Yes, I can't even count that high,,, It's a great charger for doing less than 12 cells.

one more quick question I have a 2 cell lipo that Im going to charge the battery has a jst connector and a balance lead do need to hook up the balance lead to the ice or can I charge right through the jst connector.

Normal chargeing goes thru the 2 wire plug, the same one used for dischargeing.

The balance leads are for balancing only.
