I am new to sailing and I would like to get something in the 36/600 class. Which boat is the most competitive kit out there that has quality after market rigging to purchase? I definitely want to use it for racing eventually. What websites do you guys recommend I check out for RC sailing? Oh yeah, has anyone sailed the visionsails.com prebuilt boats before? Any input on those boats... Thanks in advance!

A CR 914 springs to mind.

But, I would check out the local clubs and see what they sail and preferably get one of those.

Go to a meet and maybe get a second hand boat for a good price.

Regards, Jan.

Do you plan to build or do you want to buy a completed boat? I can give you the name and number of a guy who has a couple beautiful boats, for cheap! These are new and never sailed. Rick

Just to be clear, the class name "36-600" actually refers to an AMYA class. This class is a developmental class, which means the rules are setup such that lots and lots of experimentation can be done (as opposed to a one design class like the CR-914). Remember, just because a boat is 36" or is labeled a '36-600' by the manufacturer DOESN'T mean it belongs in that class! I know the Northwind is listed that way, but I can just about guarantee you that it wouldn't be anywhere near competitive in the real 36-600 class. I think the Sanibel is also listed as a 36-600... same story there. That's not to say those boats aren't fine sailors, but they would never compete in a true 36-600 class race.

Andy

Thanks everyone for your input!

I am going to be sailing on lake in central park NY and I have spoken with the guys there about getting into the hobby. Apparently the most popular class sailed is the IOM (not the 36-600) and I have decided to go in that direction. They have a boat I can borrow in the meantime that is suppose to be competitive enough. First race is next weekend and I can't wait to get smoked on my maiden voyage. I definitely have a lot to learn. It should be a lot of fun and a great way to spend a lazy afternoon in the sun. Best of luck to everyone

Have fun! The IOM is not particularly cheap (price wise) but it should be a great time for you. Enjoy!

But, as you mentioned for the 36/600, the International One Meters also belong to a developmental class -- So you can buy or build a competitive boat in a variety of designs as expensively or cheaply as you want, depending on your skills, budget, and desires.

Yes, I know (before somebody says it) that there is a competitive advantage in some of the more costly hardware, but I believe that advantage is way smaller than the difference between skill levels -- a really good sailor with a mediocre boat will easily beat a mediocre sailor with a really good boat. Most important is Andyt's last note: Enjoy!
