That comparison is a bit misleading I think. The D40 can use the VR and the DX lenses and if you check the list of lenses on the Nikon site, the D40 can probably use all of them. The G and D type lenses I think are older lenses. If money is no object, I would go with the 80 but if funds are limited, I would put the money towards a good telephoto lens and go with the D40. Check out my gallery. Those pics were taken with the D50 and an 80-200 F2.8 Nikon lens. Buying the D80 body for $900.00 and putting a $300.00 telephoto lens on it will not give you sharp pics of small fast moving objects. Put the money towards better glass and you can upgrade the body later if you want more features. A great analogy I've seen is hook up a little portable walkman/Ipod to a great pair of speakers and it will sound pretty good but hook up a $2000.00 receiver to some little crappy speakers and it will sound like junk. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I decided to go with the D80 as it has more flexibility, in terms of manual and autofocus. It does come with an 18x135 f3.5-f5.6 Nikkor lens that is only average according to reports I've read. I do take many pictures other than planes and although that lens will not be ideal, it will work out well in the beginning for the variety of photos I take. I will eventually buy a macro lens (I like to take pictures of flowers) and a faster zoom, but I'd rather grow with the body and not have to relearn how to do something. The price of lenses can be breathtaking. Looking at Samys camera, representative of the market I think, a Nikkor 80x200 f2.8 is $900, a Nikkor 70x200 f2.8 is $1600, not for the faint of heart. With that it mind, as I save my pennies toward lenses later, do any of you have recommendations for third party lenses that are of the same quality as Nikkor?

Good luck with the D80. Yea the Nikon lenses can be pricey. Nikon does have rebates at times and I got $100.00 off on the 80-200 but it was still $800.00 after the rebate. As for 3rd party lenses I can't say. I assume you've been checking out camera forums. The one that I've found to be helpful is this one. http://www.steves-digicams.com/ You could probably get some good info on 3rd party lenses.

Samy's is like a giant 4-story toy store. When I was at the main Samy's store, they even let me try out the Hasselblad H3D-39, which is a 39 megapixal camera priced over $40K. I basically ran out of there before I spent too much only to return to one of the smaller Samy's stores the very next day and ended up purchased the Nikkor 1.7x teleconverter. LOL. Another store to check out is B&H in NYC.

Regarding third-party lenses that are the same quality as Nikkor will probably be far and between if any. If your standards are lowered, then there may be a few depending on the focal length. Myself, I own that Nikon 70-200mm F/2.8 VR you mentioned as my primary lens and don't regret forking over the bucks for it since I know I've captured shots that I would not have been to capture otherwise--it was the third lens I purchased. I started with a slower Sigma 70-300mm that is sharp and has nice range, but when the sun starts setting...it's too busy hunting to focus and the shot is gone. However, that particular Sigma lens does have a macro feature on it which is one reason I've kept it, along with the other Sigma lens I originally purchased as part of a 2-lens package.

Good luck, have fun, and enjoy.

I think all amateurs face similar problems. I certainly don't want to spend $300+ on a "cheaper" lens only to find that it has poor image quality or won't do what I want or need it to do. On the other hand, I don't want to spend $1500 on a lens and not get my "money's worth" since I wouldn't use it that often. However, I can remember my father swearing to himself when he had bought a cheaper product and had to rebuy later when that initial purchase broke or was inadequate. If my livelyhood depended on the purchase I would go all the way because I would know I could depend on it.

I am looking at ~100mm macro lenses now, primarily for flower pictures, and have found Tamron and Sigma lenses in the $400 dollar range (with most people on bulletin boards saying nice things about them), whereas Nikon is around $700. I'll probably save for the Nikon because I could be pretty sure that it will have very good performance, 10 yrs from now the lens will still be in good working order and usable on whatever Nikon body I might have at the time.

Decisions, decisions.....

Edit for my lousy grammar.

Jim,
One other advantage is that if you check on the auction sites, the expensive Nikon lenses hold their value very well. The 900.00 lenses typically sell for 700.00 or more if their in good shape.

Slightly off-topic, but I tried something different last night--I maxed out the ISO on this night shot. Over all, it came out better than I expected. I also thought it was a good test for the Noise Ninja program that I recently downloaded (though since I don't really know how to work the program, perhaps, the photo would have even came out better). The uncorrected version is also attached.

70-200mm F/2.8 VR

Try any wings yet? It seems like I always waste a shot or two when I jump from the slower stuff to the super-fast wings, because I may forget to "speed" things up including my own "panning".
