has anyone tried converting the roof box for a plane?

i am seriously looking at modifying one of those (see pic) to transport my jet

has anyone tried this?

i supposeone one could ad fiberglass "ad-ons" for accomodating the tailfeathers (mine are not removable) and some styro holders for the fuse & wings...

if there is a precedent, please post some pics/ tips

thanks,
Vasek

I am able to stuff a Big Stik 60 and a 40 sized Wild Thing with all my field support equipment in a 2004 Nissan Sentra. The back seats fold down and you can stuff the long stuff through the trunk!

I used to have a Ranger with a fiberglass shell--that was truly a great plane hauler. However, in my short-sightedness, I sold it last year when I bought a new '05 Mustang convertible. Now, I have to borrow my wife's Corolla when I want to fly my 50" Tiger Moth(it's a pain to dissasemble, with full flying wire rigging and all that). Surprisingly, all of my other planes will fit in the Mustang, though not at the same time. I can fit 2-3 planes with a ws of 48" or less in the trunk at once, and my LT-25 Kadet rides shotgun with the nose in the passenger footwell and the wing wedged between the seat and the door.

I use a 2002 AWD Cadillac Escalade, and 20 foot x 8 1/2 foot trailer.
The only thing left that I feel I need is the installation of a suitable alarm system.
So far I have around $8,000.00 sunk into the trailer.

not to change the subject, BUT -

I am in recovery, automobile repossessions to be exact! I have over 16 years of experience in the towing, recovery, and repossession industry. I want to chime in here, because this is my expertise!

There are a lot of different alarm systems out there; one of the most recommended is the viper alarm system. However it must have a constant 12v power source (I assume your trailer does), and the use of dip switches for the doors, and a motion sensor that will detect movement (but not to much movement as the wind blows on the unit), I would also recommend "hiding" the siren / voice speaker some where between the tandems, because it's the hardest place to get to! then wire it into your trailer's marker lights to make them flash! You can install the viper alarm system in as little of two hours with the proper tools. Go to Viper Auto Alarms for more info, also they are highly configurable, with extra add on's... Important note: do not tie a viper alarm into an existing stock alarm in your caddy! It will keep tripping both alarms, as well as your on-star!

As, for me, I take off the wing(s), grab my field box, and put them in my extended cab with the passenger seat dow, they fit, or in the wrecker, i put the wings behind the cab, abd by the boom...

'06 Dodge Sprinter passenger van. 158" wheel base, super high top 6' ( yes, six foot) inside clerance. Racks inside for fuses and wings, plenty of room for anything else and 7 passengers with the rear seat removed. Wish I could figure out how to post pix, but can't. Got it wired to charge on the drive. Can carry 6 planes, 60 to 120 size, 2 helis, all support gear for 2 pilots, plus travel fridge and food with plenty of room to spare. Haven't pulled a trailer long distance yet, but locally it does better than my Ford E350 van with a 351 did with a 16' tandem axle. All this, and 20-23 mpg on diesel. Only thing to watch out for is clearance; 10' with the rear A/C unit...

Well, I must admit I am lucky enough that the folks who own the farm behind me let me keep a flying field there so I use a little different method.

It is nice and saves a lot of gas but do miss the company at times. Then again I do have company at times as one of the phoyos shows!

BTW. Don't know why the first photo didn't load right but you can see my transportation in the other.

Well, one will never know what they come across in my business, but i thought this is the sweetest little thing for my fellow RCers that use a trailer to transport there models, check out these Wireless Trailer Alarm Systems!

I had to repo a trailer Sunday night, this little sucker was installed, and It was just as good as a viper alarm, after researching it today, I found It costs a lot less, and has similar features...

Windhawk,

The deer just follows along behind the tractor and wagons as seen in the third photo. Heck, if this foolishness with gas keeps up I might have to see about getting the deer to pull the wagons!

For those of you transporting in an open truck bed do you have any problems with wind? I, unforunately, live about 25 miles from my field and have to take major highways to get there. I'm usually going 70-75MPH so I'm just worried that someday I'll see my precious wing spread across the windshield of the car behind me.

I really liked that PVC design, clever.
