Hey guys...I used the youtube thing and uploaded my second sickle. BTW the "crash" resulted in only very minor damage to the firewall which I fixed in about 2 mins at home. Did break the prop though. Flew her again the next week and stalled it about 50 feet up and it tumbled straight down...was so cool. Again...fixed it in a few minutes at home and she's ready for some more. Enjoy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWJpWyis0Vk

John Palica; In reading your reply you suggested the following:

you epoxy 1/8 X 3/16" spruce or bass wood strips into the flutes in the coro at both the leading edge and trailing edge in the area where the fuselage slot is. The strips are about 1" long and pushed in so they're flush with the edge of the coro.

If I understand it correctly. do you insert the srtips on the inside exposed fuselage slot cut out on the top surface of the wing; not sure I understand what this does; I have on some of my SPAD's inserted a 1/8" dowel the entire length of a flute like on a coroplast aileron, or elevators; I can see inserting a dowel the entire length in the leading edge flutes in the bottom side of the wing to prevent the mounting screws from crushing the coroplast.

Thanks Doug.

Well...just because I actually forgot to do this on the first Sickle I built I can tell you exactly what it does. On my first Sickle the plane nosed in at a very slight angle and the only damage on the entire plane was to the edges of LE. Where the cut out slot of the wing is flush against the fuse it made a perfect edge to slice my wing along the edge of the fuse like a knife because the flutes run in that direction. Had I had a piece of wood there to support the LE against the fuse it would have prevented this. On the second Sickle I built I actually used a 8 inch piece of yard stick and sand one edge of it to be "sharpened" like the inner part of the LE of the wing and slid it into the LE and CA'd it down. Have had several tough landings caused by cross winds and no damage to the Sickle.

Doug, I stick the strips into the open coro flutes in the wing at the fuselage cut out. Only 1" or so into the flute. Leading edge and trailing edge. This is the area where the doubler plates go. I do this to support the coro from crushing where the screws go through to attach the fuselage. I suppose I could limit the strips to just where the screws go through but I feel I get extra support if I fill all the flutes (full width of the fuselage).

John; Thanks for the reply; so this wing is bent with the Flutes going lengthwise; not chord or width wise?

The flutes in the wing go chord wise. When you cut the wing and fold it you end up with the open end of the flutes at the leading edge and trailing edge of the wing only in the area below the fuselage. That is where you put scrap pieces of down spout material to back up the wing attachment screws. For further support for the coro and the screws, I fill the flutes with 1" long pieces of 1/8 by 3/16" spruce or bass wood, epoxyed into the flutes.

cwick, they are a quick build and they go like stink. My latest has a TT Pro .46 in it. Weather has kept it on the ground but it looks like this weekend I'll be out "ripping" holes in the sky. I consider the Sickle with lots of power, my pre turbine trainer (fast and responsive). I've built many and have three flyable so I have lots of build tips if you plan to go that way.

Thanks for getting back to me so fast! Whats your overall span on it and did you lengthen the fuse any?

Cwick, the original plans show a 40" wing. With my .40 class engines I increased the wing span to 44". I also increased every other dimension except the fuselage width by an equal percentage (44/40). Don't change the slot in the wing where the fuselage fits. That stays at whatever you fuselage tube width is.

I just watched the video and yes its fast but I wonder what it would do with a 46fx or a super tiger 45... That thing would be screaming! It flies nice though! good job!

Maybe I will build a sickle with a fuse like my other spad....The vertical stabilizers canted out like an FA-18 and with the flutes running 90 degrees to the length of the fuse. It makes the fuse very rigid. The tails look cool in flight.

I flew my TT .46 Pro powered Sickle for the first time this weekend. It's a hand full at WOT. The launch isn't a launch but a simple release. It fly's out of my hand. I have another with a ST .45 and it's no where as hot as the Thunder Tiger powered one.

If you mean how much control surface throw do I have, I can only guess at this point. No more than 1/4" up and down. I'll try to remember to measure the throws when I get home from work tonight.

Chow, try tapering the ailerons from about 7" from the tip to the tip. Leave the aileron chord at the tip at about 1/2 to 3/4". A friend of mine with his first Sickle had the same problem you do and when he saw the tapered ailerons on my plane he tried it and the flutter went away.

hi there cwick
yes the low needle on the carbi , is way to lean
the needle that runs inside the slide for the throttle control , can you start the motor at and idle ..
this motor here, the low needle has only had a couple of very minor tweeks leaning it out after run in(when i say minor i mean the thickness of a hair).. do you have the user guide that came with the motor it tells you how to set the low end by blowwing through fuel tube.. any how let me know what happens ill try to help anyway i can
cheers chow

i fould a manual for the super tigre 40
to adjust the low needle wind it all the way until it beds softly dont crank it in or it will do damage...
connect some fresh fuel line to the carbi ..... set the idle screw so the slide in the carbi only has about 1 to 1.5 mm gap.... once you set that get the fuel tube and blow into it at the same time very slowly wind out the low needle it takes a good solid blow at this time when you here or feal the tiniest bit of air come through stop..... then adjust the low needle out 1 and 1/4 turns and thats it and its set that close that any adjustmants would be so slight .. it sounds like a lot but give it ago you wont regret it i use this method for all my 40 size motors
cheers chow
