Tried to launch my Mugi today. FFF is expensive in Aust so I went for Corflute like the original Mugi.

During a temporary (??) brain fade I bought 5mm (900gsm) instead of 3mm so my Mugi is 700g fully loaded. I used a Speed 480 for it with a 7x?? Prop, both from my Cessna but there was nowhere near enough thrust to keep it aloft. So now its back to the drawing board and maybe a 5x5 as recommended for my Speed 480 or a rebuild using 3mm Corflute.

I'm glad half the fun is in the building . I've also included a pic of the Jig I use to hold down the T.E.'s instead of weights.

Toyman, just a thought, if you have or can get a gearbox for your 480 it should work good even at the added weight. might look a bit odd with the size and all but would prob fly good

Thanks for that AJ. I'll give it a go and post the results.

The Mugi looks the part, so now I just need to get it into the air.

Aussie, welcome.

Do you have Hobbyzone parts available to you? I have found the Hobbyzone Stryker prop, which is a 5.9x3 prop with an extra wide blade has very good thrust for a small, lightweight prop. It is designed specifically to compliment the 480 brushed motor.

My second most sucessful prop was a 6x4speed prop with the 480.

Is your mugi made to original specs at 100% size?

Nice looking build. I've been wanting to try a coroplast version.

I successfully used regular Krylon fluorescent spray paint on mugi 100 last night. I was careful to not cover too heavy on cut edges and the rest took the paint very well. The fluorescent red on the bottom surface stands out nicely in the sky and is very easy to tell top from bottom now. I'm going to do the same to the 150. It's not pretty but it does what I wanted it to do, give me some orientation in the sky.

Edit: I decided to try some camo on the top side of 150 since I'm touting it as a spy plane. It turned out pretty nice. Very minimal foam melt along cut edges. Spray does well as long as you go very lightly with the coats.

Had very nice flights this evening on both mugis. The 150 is flying slow and gentle and I'm nearly confident enough to mount the digital camera. The 100 is screaming faster than ever. Only 1/3 throttle needed with 3 cell lipos. 2 cells calm it down somewhat.

My Migi is original size.

Looks like its time for a wiring and connector upgrade as everything now gets hot. I also found my CG was a bit off to the rear, thats fixed now.

I'll see what Prop I can get at post the results. Thanks for all your help.

Aussie,

Before you rewire you may want to try a bit smaller prop direct drive. It will lower the amp draw from the battery and everything will run a little cooler, and you will get more rpms from the motor and longer flight times. I recommend an APC 6x4E if you can't get the Stryker prop. That is what is on my 100 right now since I just broke my last Stryker prop today. And it is doing nicely. It is not the slow fly type but a little thicker plastic. Some call them E for electric, some call the speed props.

I tried a 5x5 and didn't get near the performance that I get with the 5930 and 6040.

On CG, I know they like a little bit more weight in the nose than the rear.

Keep us posted on your results.

Hey welcome toyman, Nice Build!!I really like the cockpit design... cool. Aj's right the 480 geared should give you plenty of thrust with the right prop.... Wow String! great job on the spy MUGI.... LOOKS AWESOME ! and the 100... now thats alot of PINK!!! looks good against a blue sky huh... how about formation photography? get the 100 in the air with the spy ship???? or we could fire this at the 150...? the float down shots would be great... two big chutes... did you have any large areas of bare foam on either plane? I laminated the canopy... and am afraid to try the krylon... I nosed the MUGI sniper in from 20 feet the other night with only minor damage... don't really know what happened... was banking right on final and it snap rolled left sharply and dropped out of the sky... inspection revealed nothing wrong with the radio... hopefully it was just a random hit... I took the canopy off and straightened the nose and launched again . flew the pack down , landed and saw a split across the bottom of the wing! and it still flew...

dh,

Thanks for the compliments on the paint jobs. But that's not pink! Let's call it fluorescent red. Ok? It is actually called Krylon Fluorescent. I think the blue foam did give it a slightly pink tint. I may have to give it another shot of paint to see if it changes color. Hopefully.

I had no large areas of uncovered foam. Only cut edges. I did get just the slightest foam shrinkage on the edges, just enough that you could see a tiny edge of the film.

Couldn't fly at all today. Too windy and too busy. I'm going to try to get with Aj again this week if possible. It's so cool flying with another jet. Hopefully somehow we'll get some pictures to share.

Looks like I failed the Mugi IQ test, had the prop on the wrong way around so the trailing edge was leading. No wonder it was down on thrust.
Anyway 6x4 Prop on order and waiting for the winds to die down. While I wait I'm starting on a Corflute Nasty, gotta do something with all this plastic sheet.

I'll get this bird in the sky yet!

Edit: Tell them to adjust their Monitors, Five. It's not PINK, its a nice shade of Mauve.

Toyman, I did the same thing on a Zagi Tazz! It was touted as an 80-85 mph wing... it glided to the ground beautifully in about 60 yards!! I was perplexed... Hey, whats a nasty? is it electric?

Guy's if you use the testors model paint and use primer the color will be right for you, I would suggest covering it all with packing tape after painting as it flakes and chips easy but if you want it to look good you have to prime it or seal the foam in first

DH, the nasty is basicaly a standard 3-D profile plane like the edge or many others in appearance, it is electric and is a blast to fly

I flew with AJ this trip and oh what fun! He had his nasty and I had the mugi 100P (P for pink) with me and she flew soo nice. I also tried a new prop, a 6040 Sport. Holee Molee! I had to calm my heartrate down. Mugi ate up the sky! Lots of speed. I had to go to low rates to keep it under control.

Aussie, Mauve, huh? I don't know which I like better, pink or mauve.

The Nasty is a great plane to build and fly. Flat foam build and most any motor from a 350 geared on up will do a good job. Check out Fun With Flat Foam for complete info. I'm gonna build another one VERY soon. AJ was having some issues with electronics but when it did respond it was sweet. I think he was experiencing low battery power on his tx.

I had a blackbird come after my wing during flight. I turned the chase around and was after her a little. She didn't give up easily. I was minding my own business just doing circuits and noticed she was following me everywhere I went. I slowed down till she caught up and then gave it throttle and flew away.

The pink does show up well in the sky. I still need something on the blue side so I picked up a can of Testor's spray in Metallic Purple. That should look wild.

I ate a tree this evening. I thought I was beyond it and was dropping in for a low speed pass and the tree was still between me and the wing. It hit into a large limb hard. Repairable.

Mugi 150 also took a hit tonight. I nosed in hard enough to break the nose out in spots. Repairable. Aj talked me out of putting my good dig camera in the air. I'm going to go with Son's cheap one for now and see how good the pictures turn out.

A better day today for Mugi 150. I have sucessfully had two aerial photography sessions, albeit my camera aim is a little off yet. 150 is so sweet today I caught it in my hand on the last landing Whoa.

Here's the little town over the hill from me, a large feed mill in the center....

I want to document mounting a camera on a mugi 150 if anyone is interested.

1. I made a frame from fff by simply wrapping a 1½" wide strip of fff around the camera snugly and hot gluing together. Obviously, I didn't glue the camera in. I can remove it for battery changes. I did cut a small hole in the side of the frame for usb access. I mounted a servo so it would hit the shutter button. I operate it on channel 4. I added fff and velco the the face for mounting in the plane.

2. I cut a hole in the floor of the mugi 150 cockpit and added several small areas of velcro.

3. Mounted the camera in the cockpit.

4. I had to "build up" the cockpit cover so it would close over the camera when mounted.

5. The lens looks straight out the bottom. ('Scuse the paint job. A test gone bad)

6. Mugi is watching you...

wursted,

Looking forward to pics and flight reports. I can't get enough of my two. They are just a blast to fly. The 100 for speed and excitement and the 150 for pics and slower cruising.

What size are you going to build? And what power setup do you have? Details!! Lots of details!!

I will be building another one soon. My son wants to have air combat with me. That should be really fun. Just as soon as I get a buddy box, he'll have his own mugi.

The pink is no more. Couldn't take the ridicule...it's now Purple Metallic on top and Gold on the bottom. Actually, I changed them because I still lost orientation in flight with pink and purple and crashed into a nice soft alfalfa field. Too close to tell them apart far off. Hopefully this will do it.

Ok, another one bites the dust. Mugi 100 is dead and buried. A major nose-in at WOT. Turns out the purple and gold were not enough for me to figure out which side is up on a high speed spiraling nose dive.

Time to build!! Yay!

Next one may have more wing sweep. About a 60° instead of a 90° nose. I'm thinking of going back up to a 125% also.

The next victim Mugi is born! I cut and glued all evening. I made a 32½" wingspan version with a more swept back wing. IT has a 72° nose, as opposed to the 90° nose of the standard bird.

I hope to try it tomorrow night (sunday). Will post results.

FIVE- I am planning on building a 100 mayby 125. I have a 400 motor and servoes from an Aerobird Challenger si I am piecing it together. I am planning on mounting the motor amidships lik you did. It will take a little figuring because the batteries I have are not flat they are 2x3 and 2x3+1 packs. I'm not sure how that will all fall together. Are you using NiMH or are you using LIPO? I hope to start building soon!!

When I glued the wings down on my Mugi 100 I used my 8.4v NiMh (2x3+1) pack in the nose to form the wing shape. This also made sure they would fit come time to fly.

I've received an Outrunner to try to power my heavy Coroplast Mugi, just waiting on the ESC now and we'll see if it'll fly .

five- how did you have the battery oriented? Across the width of the plane or in line with the length of the plane? also what did you use for push rods and controll horns? I have decided to build a 119.0625% MUGI That is with a 37.5 in wingspan. Any ideas what I should call it? Mugi<120 or `~120 MUGI

Hey! Back from vacation. Good to see the posts!

WN, You just caused tears in my eyes, laughing at your last post.

I would call it Mugi 119.0625, but that's a lot of typing...You could put those numbers on it like an ID number on the fins.

I use 11.1v, 1200-1300 mAh lipos, differing sizes. I mount the battery any way I can to get CG right. Sometimes it gets pushed up in the nose cavity, sometimes it just sits in the cockpit, depending on the motor configuration and size. Always centered as much as possible, but like I said, CG determines how it gets shoved in there.

Pushrod and control horns... I use .032" music wire from LHS for my pushrods. I use the Dubro mini easy connectors at both ends to connect to servo and horn. The horns are also Dubro, but some guys make them from old shopping cards.

Aussie, Good idea on using the NiMh to form the nose. That was the only downside to my 100, it was so small that most batteries will not fit up in the front cavity. The 125 is just right, the 150 is very roomy.

I posted these elsewhere but here's my latest ventures in fff....neither have been maidened yet. Just finished Nasty at 2:00 this morning. Hopefully get to fly today.
