hey steve.. glad you posted the info because i couldn't remember what prop you were running

and 5S - to-do lists are a perpetual thing.. its better a mugi be added than having your wife add "CLEAN THAT BLUE FOAM CRAP OFF MY KITCHEN COUNTER!!!" can't tell ya how many times i've heard that .. she doesn't buy my story of how building in the house as opposed to the garage is spending 'quality family time' lol

steve.. if the wind stays reasonable today.. ron and i will be out flying in the afternoon

Hey Stevie! A big WELCOME!! Glad to hear you have gleaned a few good things from this thread. Congrats on the high speed flights. Speed is good.

The kitchen counter comment is EXACTLY what goes on here. And when she says, "why don't you do that out in the shed?", I tell her I can spend time with the family and build at the same time if I do it in the house. She's very lenient with the epoxy stuck to the counter and tiny bits of blue foam floating around the kitchen floor.

A 400DF JGF motor? I am green with envy! I want one so bad, just haven't gotten one yet. But judging from the little 300 DF I have I know it is a screamer. Did you say how many amps you're drawing with that setup?

Well, I did it...or maybe I should say I'm doing it now. I just took a break from building to see what's up here. So, I'll go ahead and post a picture of my latest creation.

I don't know what to call this one yet. It is built soley from some ideas I wanted to incorporate into a new plane, like more sweep in the wing, sharper 'stealth'-like angles and a top that opens up. I am going to put the 300DF on it and hope for the best. It just needs 'tronics and it should be ready for a maiden on Friday at Terry's house.

Got any ideas for a name?

sure ya got enough room for a battery in that fuse 5er's?

i've got an idea.maybe you could put your lunch in it for at the flying field.. and call it the 'lunch box' lol

kidding aside.. i think that looks very cool. i hope you get pics and video of it flying.. as for the name.. it looks like a hunting arrowhead.. maybe call it the 'Razorbak' .. or there's an archery company called "Muzzy" if you wanted to stay on the mugi theme....hmmmm.... 'tekan' .. 'reaper'.... 'aftershock'.....'sharpshooter'..

okay..thats all i can come up with.. good luck with the maiden and the name.. and a happy thanksgiving to everyone!

It will hold two slices of leftover pizza and a bag of chips.

Actually, it is so shallow I am having a hard time mounting the servos where they have room to move the arms.

Hunting arrowhead, huh? Hmmm...how about Broadhead? I kinda like Razorback but that reminds me of a sports team or a wild hog.

Maybe Razr like my phone....

Looking good gentlemen. I realy like all the variations you guys are coming up with. What are you guys using for those cool clear canopies?

The maiden of the Broadhead was not too good. I crashed lightly twice. Today, I realized I didn't check CG.

I moved the battery forward an inch and added 5 pennies to the nose. It now flies but it's not fast enough. And a little too unstable to persue it any further. But it does fly.

I found this forum yesterday and really liked this plane. I've been flying one that looks similar that I based off a plane called a superflea twin by superfly rc. Mine is white styrofoam covered in microlite covering. What I like best is the motor system. I used 2 gws 12mm motors with 3.25x3 props. The motors go up on top of the plane on little pylons, this way you can land and even take off without hitting the prop. This setup would probably work well for a smaller version of the Mugi. My plane is 22" wide and 14" long. It flies best under 7 oz. but will fly heavier.

Brown;

Post some pics...

Mark:

Hope you had a good run. I will be very interested in your impressions of the green foam...

I am trying to locate a source, so if you like it, maybe we could split a bundle?

Terry, I had a good trip. I am very interested in more of the green stuff. I haven't built with it yet. I am still playing with the Hyperwing and the Broadhead today. I got the BH to fly pretty well by stripping it down to basically just the bottom wing and a little cockpit area up front. I put a new 2500kv moter on it with a 4540 prop. It scooted pretty well till I got glitched real bad and she went into a cornfield. Punched a hole in the wing, already fixed. I think I may need to reroute the antenna.

Brown, welcome. I would really like a picture detailing the mounts you described. I am thinking of trying a mugi with retracts. I picked up two different sets of retracts on my way home from Tampa. I really want to ROG one of these birds. And, hey, if it handles well, who knows, maybe it will be some fun while staying on the ground.

What kind of retracts did you get that would be light enough for a mugi?

GWS Pico and Naro. One set of each. i will try to use the smaller two for the mains and one of the larger ones for the steerable nose.

I would like to post some pics of my delta twin but my digital camera is dead!

As for ROG takeoffs i've done a few sliding on the bottom of the plane off a smooth parking lot.
Then I added three 1 inch wheels to the bottom, one in the nose and two just behind the cg line. The wheels are half embedded in some slots in the bottom of the plane and only stick down about 1/2 inch. This plane needs no clearance since the motors are up on top. This allows me to land on either parking lots or grass.

For an idea of how the motors are mounted look up the superflea by superfly rc.

Yes, Sput. That is the Super Flea. I am going to try moving the motor up on my next Mugi, which is going to be created just as soon as I carve out an afternoon of airplane time from my schedule.

I have some tall, thin wheels I want to try, maybe not retract but I want to see if they will act as vertical stabilizers and not put fins on the top. I plan on covering the hub part of the wheels with thin plastic sheet to make them a solid vertical surface instead of spokes.

The only problem i've had with ROG takeoffs with this plane is no steering. You pretty much have to hope it goes straight until you get off the ground.

Maybe if you had a rudder...or differential thrust. Anyone know of a way to use two speed controls and mix the throttle and rudder?

I've only got a 4 channel Tx, but use an onboard mixer for the elevons. It won't work for ESC's because you only get half throttle with the throttle channel, just like you only get half up elevator with an elevon. It would probably have to be a special mixer.

I would think you would have to do a 3 servo setup to add steering rudder...... but what about dubro's steerable tail wheel concet?....get a mini servo and mount it on the bottom close to the tail wheel..... Im not sur if that will work well with a delta wing but its my 2 cents..

I'm thinking of putting a steering nose wheel on it so I can taxi and maybe even hae a little fun running around on the ground before taking off if it goes well.

Yup. My experience is they all work the same. And they seem to work well. I have used three different ones, all with great results.

any progress on the retract-mugi 5S? that will be interesting to see!

i've been working on the folded flying wing for my son.. if the wind stays down..tomorrow i'll give it a test flight and if it flies like the last one did.. then i can finish the 'san diego chargers' theme he wants. i covered the top of the wing with white vinyl shelf covering. i'm a little worried about the weight it might add but it beats painting and can't be that much heavier. here's a few pics...

Semi,

Very nice job. I bet it'll fly like greased lightning. Share the plans??

I have not had any time to even begin a plane build. Holiday season and all...

plans huh?

i am terrible about just building as i go.. and not thinking about future success..lol.. but this time i did write out the measurements on the fff as i went along and made sure to snap some pics..

i'd make the top (the part that folds over) larger and then just trim off the excess after gluing.. the first one had fff winglets but this one i used 3/16" balsa fins and made them extend underneath to act as landing skids

it's a mugi in every way but shape.. the center section doubler was purely trim-n-fit till i got it right.. i made it a bit wider for some added strength..

here's some rough plans and photo's
