ORIGINAL: nyflyer56 Why does this have to be so complicated? Simple is always better. This tiered system does nothing to get the parkflyers involved, and complicates things for the general membership. I keep hearing about the turbine waivers. They were needed, simply because of the safety factor. They are complex, fast, carry a lot of fuel, and have a tendency to burn when crashed (Bummer jet dude!). The waiver shows that a pilot is capable of safely operating these. Makes sense, and the jet guys probably feel a bit of pride and responsibility for being trusted with this technology. I don't consider that a tiered system, just something that was needed for a special emerging modelling field. Other than that, what is wrong wiyh the Idea of a first year discount to all new pilots to get them in the door. Make up the diff by making the mag bi-monthly for them. Simple, enforceable, and easy to track who stays or leaves after the first year. The tiered system will be impossible to police, and will probably due more to hurt clubs, than help. My vote is for simplicity and some common sense. Once again of course none of this will work without the clubs being a helpful welcoming group. Lets keep the system simple and work on the real problem, getting the clubs on the same page. Just my 2 cents once again. You are right but, add this to your thoughts..... The main fuel the turbine guys use now days is kerosene and turbine oil which on it's own is hard to ignite (basically you need high compression or some sort of a wick). These guys have have to have training and carry fire extinguishers as part of their safety equipment. Now on the other hand look at guys that have gasoline engines.... Gasoline if I remember is far more volatile than kerosene. I see guy fueling and smoking at the same time. They have no special training, fly far more riskier and don't, as I know it, have to carry fire extinguishers. I feel far safer with the turbine guys, then the guys with large planes.... You decide.......... I don't disagree with you, nor am I saying anything against the turbines. I think they are awesome., And Yes, Gas is easier to ignite. However, very few Gassers are 200 mph speedsters, and a Weedwacker type motor (no offense to you 3w etc.. guys) is not as complicated as a turbine. I have seen many videos of crashed turbines burning, never saw one of a gasser going up in smoke. (altho, I'm sure it has happenned somewhere). The point being, Gassers aren't much differrent from glo motors operationally, in some cases they are simpler. Turbines have more complicated start up, shutdown, and safety issues, as well as critical maintenence. This is not to say that they are a problem, just that those who fly them have to be more aware, and adhere to these procedures for reliability & safety. The waiver shows that they understand this, and are capable of handling such a hi performance aircraft. Much to their credit I might add, they do a great job. What I meant by all that is that the waiver is not a segregation, but more of a comendation of their abilities. I did not want it to color the issue of the park flyers, or discussion of tiered membership. I am sure that no competent Turbine enthusiast feels like they are being singled out, they understand the capabilities of both themselves and their equip. I don't think you will find that by trying to segregate out the low end of the flying spectrum.
