starjet -> Zenoah23-not running right (12/15/2002 1:44:38 PM)

Hi all,
I have been running a G23 for about 6 months fitted to a Hanger 9 ultra-stick.I am using fully synthetic oil mixed to 40/1 to start with for the first gallon, now gone to 50/1 as recommended. It also has the carb trumpet fitted plus the brass tube mod.on the carb(again all recommended by Zenoah).
My problem is that at about 1/3 throttle the engine is very hesitant (like a flat spot)unless i set the lower jet rich, but when i throttle back to tick over its quite lumpy. If i lean it out for a smooth tickover then the hesitation comes back(at1/3 throttle.).Its fine at full throttle and either side of 1/3.
I thought it might improve as the engine runs in more.To date its had about 2 hours running(nothing really for a petrol).
Would be interested to hear from anyone who has more experience than me.
Thanks.

The G23 carb normally has two holes at different intervals for the idle circuit into the venturi. They are covered or uncovered by the butterfly or throttle plate. The hole for the high speed is just down stream of the smallest part of the venturi. However at lower partial throttle settings, there's not enough flow past it for it to effect anything.

I've noticed this rough zone with the Walbro. There is a point at about 1/3 throttle that you often have to compromise one of the other mixtures for. I usually let it be the idle. In all but one instance I got away with it.

I once had a chainsaw that was so bad about quitting in this region, I finally got tired of checking the passages and trying to adjust the needles. I put a diffrent carb on it and the transition problem went away. There must have been a manufacturing defect in that one carb?

Does the engine have to tick over at absolute perfection at all speeds?

Good luck

Jim

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the info.As long as i have done all i can,and done it right then ok.Im not too bothered if i have to run a rich idle, better that than have it cut during flight.
As long as its not causing damage which i presume its not, then i can live with that.
Thanks again,
Kevin

I have been running the G23 for a while as well, I use a velocity sack with the angled part forward , I have not noticed any hesitation but there is some vibration at idol but nothing I consider a problem. I tried the stack in different positions and this is what seems to work. I think we also have to keep in mind that that these (at least mine) is a fixed timing ign. so it has to be set up for one end of the power band for specific RPM ranges, the same way glow engines have to be tuned different for different size props , you can change the ign. timing slightly with more or less fuel, not quite the same with gas but as mentioned the low side is a little off for perfect transition, the stack seems to help. So I would imagine the timing is set for higher rpm rather than low end, meaning the timing is probably advanced to far at Idol - half throttle. I also use smaller props than most 15X8 apc running around 9200 rpm .

Starjet,
I run several G 23's and have never done anything special to break in this engine. Your comment on using 40:1 then going to a 50:1 oil mix had me rereading the owners manual. In my manual it recommends the use of Zenoah 2 stroke 100% synthetic oil at a ratio of 25-40:1. On the bottle of Zenoah oil it recommends a 32:1 mix which I always use. I would rather know that my engine is getting enough oil thru it than not enough. I can also say that I have yet to foul out a spark plug using this mixture. The manual also covers Break-In procedure, "No specific break-in is required. The engine is gradually broken-in as it is used, and the output power increases gradually as the engine breaks in." I also have a G-62 and a Quadra 52 that I use the same oil and mix ratio. Works for me!

Thanks guys,
Some interesting points there.I too have double checked my instructions and it does say 40/1 mix for the first gallon and then 50/1mix after that, but ONLY if using a fully synthetic oil (which i am),if using a non synthetic then it says to use 25/1 to 30/1 mix.
I am also using a 15x8 master airscrew prop rather than the 16x10.I find the smaller prop better for my particular type of model eg.fun fly.op rpm is 9300.
cheers for now. :)
