Status: offline 		I like the thermal side of things. It reminds me of fly fishing, you never know when the strike will come and it is amazing when you see that nudge and start working the current.

Status: offline 		I love to watch anything soaring....buzzards are so graceful. Hawks too. I have had buzzards fly in and check my sailplane out. I try to stay with them to stay in lift.

Went out today and encountered some real violent thermals... a little change of pacefrom the usual "sedate" flying.. eventually had to "ground" my e-lady, besides the strong wind, when she entered the thermal it was kinda hard to control... especially when i did not penetrate it or took it a little by the side, the wing would tip almost outta control..Birds seem to handle it well though

had to admit i had fund, but kind of unnerving for a sailplane noobie...

Status: offline 		I love sailplanes because there is no power involved (well, on some planes ) That silent flight is just amazing to watch.

It is pretty relaxing to huck up my dlg and be FORCED to glide gracefully, or else have the model drop like a rock.

Hunting for thermals is a lot like fishing. You know where the fish like to be, but you dont always know if they are there that day.

Status: offline 		I like Slope Soaring. I find it's a lot more relaxing than powered flight. It "rejuvenates" me. I can't imagine flying a powered plane for over an hour on a single flight, yet on the slope, the time just slips by.

Maybe because "in your face" aerobatics always give you a 100 foot buffer zone beneath?
Maybe because you're out in nature flying with birds over majestic vistas?
Maybe because you make the most of your time, given you need to drop everything and go when the lift is up (a la surfing?)

If Mr. Richard Bach were a sloper, I'm sure he would have a good quote from Johnathan Seagull himself.

Status: offline 		Slope soaring and surfing go pretty well together. When its blowing onshore you go sloping, offshore you go surfing, a simple way of utilizing the weather for maximum out door enjoyment. Takes a similar "Feel" with slope soaring and surfing, finding pocket of energy, with surfing you feel it, and soaring you recognize the way the aircraft behaves. Both are pure pursuits.

Status: offline 		I've slope soared all over the UK (business evenings, a stolen hour in the day) for more than 20 years. Always made welcome at new sites, always been helped and lent bits and pieces and given and received great advice.
Chickens or eggs? Does it make us a nice crowd or does it attract a nice crowd. We all seem to love the birds, vista and so on, and the something for nothing thermal.
If you read this forum and others, there seems to be a huge amount of warm, kind, friendly people doing it, all over the world! Long may it last.

I agree. Dave Garwood wrote about the "soaring addiction" in RCSD several years back for Jerry and Judy Slates -- two prime examples of warm, kind, friendly people.

Status: offline 		I'm with Liberator. On more than one occasion I've sort of likened it to fishing. And like fishing you never know what is up there until you cast your bait.....

Out of all the model flying I've done RC thermal soaring and free flight thermal catching are the two areas that keep me coming back for more

Status: offline 		When I used to fly power, I knew even before I took off what the flight was going to be like. I'd plan a certain flight path, a set of maneuvers, how long the flight would last, etc. Then, barring dumb thumbs or other mishap, it happened pretty much as planned. Boring. Why even bother?

With soaring, every flight is an adventure. Will I scratch around at a couple hundred feet, struggling to stay up for 5 minutes? Will I hook into a hat sucker and struggle to get the thing back down? Maybe I'll be back on the ground in a minute. Who knows? There's only one way to find out: take another flight.

I've flown at hills near Deruyter and Hammondsport NY, -- both are hang glider spots with cleared land on top. Neither was really all that great -- especially considering they both faced NW and I have a much better hill for that up north.

Cortland is a nice town, but I've never seen a hill there with the ideal bare spot on top, sharp dropoff and no obstacles in front.

Status: offline 		It's freeking magic. There is just no possible way that something that big should be able to float around the sky that slowly! The idea that you could walk under a 100" er and just pick it out of the air, amazing.

Status: offline 		Soaring is about as relaxing as it can get.

In the summer, I like to get to the field at about 0500 and set up the glider.

Power up to about 400ft, and look for anything resembling a thermal.

Good part is here in the desert, a tree is a start for a thermal column. The sun hits it about 535am and by 0600 it's started up.

Even better: No Nitro Planes in the sky before 0700 .

I usually have the sky to myself for an hour or so.

Then when it hits 105 degrees at noon and everyone is leaving, come back and I have the skies to myself with the exception of one other flier.

Yes it gets hot, but isn't that why you bring an icechest and lounge chair?

I doubt I've ever done as much body english and suffered so much angst as when trying to score that little fluff and keep aloft when you're darn near on the deck. But when it's good you suddenly feel that sense of relief and the quick switch to the relax mode where the sun shines just a little brighter on the soaring models and birds than it does on the propellor jobs......

Status: offline 		I agree with you bruce about sweating fountains.
I up-powered my Siren with a 14.8v lipo and now she screams..
I took my eyes off of her to chage the switch for hi-lo rates o nthe ailerons, and when I looked back where I thought she was .....she wasn't.
Soooooo, nice easy roll to the left to see the top of the wings, and whala there she is about 70 ft above the ground at a 60 degree angle down at about 45mph....PANIC-NO PANIC-PANIC!!!!
Ease in the up elevator, and she pulls out above the creasote bushes with about 10 feet to spare.

That's the last time I fly a hotliner at dawn + 30 minutes.
Got her on the ground and waited an hour to fly her again.
THIS TIME, I made sure I had sufficient overhead light to see her when she is in profile.

I enjoy flying her with power for a few minutes, then kicking back and hunt for thermals of any size. But when she gets close to the ground I power up and try again; at least as long as the batteries will let me .
