A full day of research, reviewing threads, and even talking with a couple of the race manufacturers has not got me the answers I am looking for to jump into this exciting realm of RC. I have learned the F1 GT class is where I want to start. My unanswered questions are:

What plane is best suited for the Zenoah 80? What's been proven? Where do you get one?

I have come across about 7 different air frames, but nothing on the USRA web site differentiates which model for a particular class. Budget is important, and the F1 GT class seems to address this as it's popularity has demonstrated. Can someone help me get a list of who/where to get the right plane for this class?

If I want to go faster and jump up in class, can I make the Zenoah faster with alcohol?

Are there any ARF F1 planes? I fly and maintain better than I build.

Finally, spoke with Dick about his Black Diamon 280 motor and his Stilletto. Thumbs up and thanks....but out of my price range for getting started in something new. Will be there soon though. Also thanks to luvrair(sp?) for the nice email and pics of the Sundowner. All great works!!!! I sure want to get something....but preferrably a plane I can fly and learn at my local field before going racing. Thanks for any help and direction. Sorry if a couple of you have received similar questions as I was reviewing threads all day to day.

there is nuthing about being on a budget in giant scale racing...there is going in or not...u got to want to do it or not want to do it...the initial cost is a killer...an airframe is going to set u back about 1500 bux depending....i would talk to ed rankin since he has the best prices around for what u would want to do.......GSR is the most expensive part of the racing world...so be prepard to spend some money!! and i hope u like to travel

Fly200,
Call Jerry Bradley, he has a ranking Proud Bird almost ready to fly. It has some damage due to a strange midair, (dont ask ) but it is almost repaired and would be a good starter airplane that you can move up to F1 Pro class. he is in Ft. Worth texas , so it is not to far from you. Also charlie Powell is thinking of selling his proud bird also. you might give him a call. It is a Very well buit plane and is LIGHT.

PM me for there Phone #s

Give me an email if you are serious.
I have several F1's in various states that I would like to get rid of.
Probably could make you a good price.

Team Extra's Diego Lopez builds the Kelly F1D and the GR-7 both are excellent F1 GT models and the most common, but the Kelly is a little easier to fly. Both are excellent models to convert to Formulae 1 and run 25% nitro for fuel. We also build the Miss Ashley Unlimited (A mustang variant with Lear Jet wings and stab (It's beautiful)). Engines commonly used for the Miss Ashley are Aero 200's, DA 150's and ZDZ 160.

All the models are built molded wings with 3mm 71 IG Roahcell and the fuselages are built with 3mm Nomex and require only 1 bulkhead. All the parts have optimized for quick construction, for example the ailerons use skin hinges and all you need to do is make 3 cuts on the wing (cut marks are provided on the wings) drill a hole for your arm or "horn" and install your servo and linkage.

For more money, Diego will install the stab, set the incidence, wing bolts, alignment and fit & glue the engine bulkhead in for you. He can also set-up all the servos for the rudder, elevator and wings. Or he can build you a turnkey model.

The main difference between a new plane and a used plane, is weight. You would be better off to have a plane that requires 3 lbs of ballast to reach the GT class min weight of 27 lbs. and then remove the weight for the Formulae 1 class that has a 25 lbs min. weight.
The more a plane weights over the 27 lbs minimum, the slower off the corners and the less competitive it will be.

We will have at least 1 of each model for sale at the upcoming race at Rantoul, Il. And we can have what ever you want done before the next race in Ohio.

For more info go to the USRA web site and contact Tom Easterday or send me an email.

Good info from Darth, nice pics too. Kelly's are cool looking airplanes.

There are a few different airframes available for F1GT, choosing one depends on how much you like to build. The GR7 and the Kelly are probably the most competitive, others are on the way that may be as competitive. Here's what I can think of;

All molded, from Diego Lopez; GR7 and Kelly F1D. A relatively simple build from the molded parts, or if budget allows you can get a turn key model.

Fiberglass fuselage, foam wing kits from Rankin Race Design; Proud Bird, Shadow, AR-6, PR-2 Pole Cat. All require a good amount of labor to complete, turn key models can be arranged also. The Shadow and AR-6 are not yet race proven.

RnR Products offer a molded Pole Cat which is very competitive.

Michael Luvara has a Sundowner (modified Shoestring) in the works, no set date for kit release. Prototype has flown and has a lot of potential.

The Northcoast Aerosport guys (Chris and Tom) fly a Video Cassutt (long wing Cassutt IIIM), not sure if they offer plans or parts. Builders project for sure.

All these models can be flown in either F1GT or F1 depending on the motor.

Other than paying for one of the above models to be completed further, there are no 'ARF's' on the market at present. The fully molded models come as close to an ARF as any. There was some talk about Composite ARF doing a molded Nemesis but I don't think it has happened yet.

GSR is not cheap but it's not as bad as some. I was keeping track of a couple of F1GT builds but decided I really didn't want to know. Basic would be $1500-2000 for the basic airframe, $800 for the motor, and maybe $700-800 for servos and Rx depending on type.

As far as flying at your local field, you would need a fairly long runway. Takeoff is no issue but these birds need some space to land, especially if there's no wind. Most guys land motor off so there's no going around. With practice you can put them down in a shorter space but it's nice to have some margin.

People what did you think about the Wendell Hostetler Nemesis 42% plan and his construction.I like to build and I don't have a lot of money for Composite.
Although if I make it the I will cover complete in fiber of carbon.Something that I will implement

the nemesis is out dated and there is a newer version called a shadow from ed rankin(see usra web page). Personally the GR7 is best plane out there. anything else is good for second.

And you're a Kelly driver....

They're all good. If you want to build from scratch in order to save some money the choices are limited. The money saved versus the time and effort spent to scratch build are not even close, ask me how I know. It's far more effective to buy a molded model. I'd go with the GR7, Kelly or AR-6.

by the way I got me a p/bird from J miller with a fast freddie alky, and denny b is bringing me an extra wing rtf w/ servos and l/gear to parker. The plane needs final paint and airborne, but will make a good practice plane for F1 for the distant future. that way I save my Gr's for race day.
loaner... uh huh!!!
bet it stays right where it pits when its all done.
